Fruit Stripe gum was a big part of my childhood. My favorite flavor was lime, but I liked all of them. I didn't care that the flavor would last only a few seconds, I liked it anyway. As I got older, my tastes have changed but I still always have a pack of gum on me. Nowadays though, it's either 5 Cobalt (peppermint) or Rain (spearmint).
Hahaha, I remember this commercial and the gum. Tasted good, (as a child) but the flavor faded very quickly. Good memories though. Thanks for posting. :-))
you are right, everyone, they did change it. it used to even smell like the fruit. and also what is even worse, the hostess cup cakes taste like cardboard and chemicals . i remember when those were incredible, and it isn' t my age, they switched to cheaper ingredients, had to be.
i always swallowed it , and look everyone, i am in my fifties, see, it didn't kill me! thats what i heard, that i would die from swallowing my gum. heck , i used to eat the big packages, that came out later. but i did lose my teeth and wear dentures. the fillings would come out from chewing too much!
Yikes! Stripes! Yep, you'd pop it in your mouth, give it about 3 chews, and it was worthless. Someone said it used to be better, but that would have been well before the late '50s, when I first chewed it.
This ad's great but I am perpetually looking everywhere for the 1971-72 era of Beechnut Fruit Stripe Gum Ads with the Zebra! Does anyone remember the Zebra and the "Tickle Your Tongue With Fruit Stripe Gum!" and the famous retort, followed by laughter, endless laughter- "It WON'T tickle MY tongue, Zebra (tries gum) - - "IT DOES!!, IT DOES TICKLE MY TONGUE!!!!" - - "WOO-HA-HA-HA-HA!"
Yeah! I remember first getting a pack of it as a kid on halloween, and I loved the taste! It was also cool because it was the only gum ever to be black-colored, haha
Wow,that was a lot gum in that pack, and I bet it only cost like 40 cent. Today that same pack will be $3.99. I LOVE classic tv and commrecials, when the world was much simpler and easy going. I remember when I was little,I used 2 LOVE beech-nut gum. Fruit Stripe gum is good also.
I buy this stuff sometimes. Yes it's still good stuff with lame tattoos that I give to my daughter. And still the flavour doesn't last very long. I get it at the downtown candy store that specializes in U.S. imports.
Wasn't this the gum that had a commercial that said something like: "I'm not talking while the flavor lasts."? My husband remembers it too... but we are having a hard time convincing anyone we aren't dreaming. ha
That *was* Beech-Nut, but not the Fruit Stripe version. I've heard that commercial you're thinking of on a tape of old radio ads I have. In the version I have heard, Columbus' crew wants him to turn back, gives the answer you list, and then the sailor says "We could be in for a loooong voyage."
I remember Beech-Nut used a very similar slogan with its Sour Bites candy (very similar to SweeTarts, but smaller--about the size of as aspirin--and sold in a pouch instead of a roll: "Yipes! Stripes! Sour Bites!"
The commercial was before my time but I do remember the gum. I chewed it as a kid when flavor used to last in gum vs today it loses its flavor so fast. This is the reason I don't chew gum anymore.
Its funny how you forget about these things until you see the commercial again. I was young, but I can still remember how this gum tasted.. I wish they made this still
I absolutely remember this commercial. The selling point for me as a child was the bold fruit colored stripes on each stick of gum. Thank you Lucyhuto, this makes my mouth water too!
I loved this when I was a kid...It was intensely sweet....

I forgot all about Fruit Stripe, my grandma always had some when I was a kid. Also, Doublemint, Spearmint, Teaberry where some of my favorites.

Fruit Stripe gum had that long lasting flavor too. Sometimes you could chew it for like 3 seconds before it was like eating paste. Ahhh the memories.

Fruit stripe gum was great.. Now they've put that aspartame sh!t in it. They screwed it all up.

After shoving 5 sticks of this stuff in my mouth at once and chewing all day, I can see why i eventually lost my taste for it.

@olddude521 : That's funny! I remember doing the same thing.
I haven't see Beechnut products in years.
I thought they went the way of Bonamo Turkish Taffy, and
Mr. Salty Pretzel Sticks washed down with Hoffman's Cocoa Cream soda.

It is the gum with the least stamina, flavor goes so quick you pack would not last anytime at all.
But MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! It is good!

That's why I'd chew the whole pack at once!
