Sun Records uncovered music genuises.. Each and every one a Great Artist.. None of them competed against each other.. just total respect.. The 50s is where it all began.. lets not forget Buddy Holly.. But Jim Reeves was great also.. we could go on and on.. great music from great artists.. Each one just opened their mouth and sang a tune.. great stuff..
What's to compare here? These incredible men (including the absent Elvis), were pioneers of rock music that lasted until they died -- AND most of them recorded more of their best music at the END of their careers. Elvis was the King -- but these men -- they don't bow to any king -- and Elvis liked it that way -- believe me. Elvis respected each and every one of the men on this stage as they respected him in return. They all cast musical shadows the rest of us couldn't stand in.
It doesn't really matter who is better than who in this company. Throw in the likes of Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and ask yourself the question how many of today's 'stars' have comparable weight and gravitas. I don't doubt they have the money, but this crowd have something that money can't buy. They have history, they have earned it - and that's not something that can be bought and sold.
That's such a true comment. All the names you've mentioned here have something the "stars" of today don't . Apart from talent, that is. These legends all exuded charisma
@ImpaleClan As you could probably tell by Johnny's speech, not even he would call himself more King of Rock n' Roll than Elvis. "I was the guest and he was the star. And he always was a star."
@ImpaleClan i beg to differ... they were all kids.... Jerry Lee Lewis was the Piano king, Elvis was the king of having Soul for rock and roll, Johnny cash was the king for having the heart of Rock and roll, and Roy orbison was the king of the voice, and Carl Perkins was the king of rising up when you have nothing.... THEY WERE ALL KINGS
@MrJackDice JR Lewis was fantastic.. Jamming with Elvis was great.. These guys didnt compete .. they were just mates creating music for the future .. and what a legacy they left.
This is soooo good, thanks for sharing.Man that Carl Blue Suede shoes is one salty singer. And Roy Orbison what a sweet soul! And of course my rocker The Johnny Cash and his steady like a train sound~Doesn't get any better.Would have been awesome if Jerry Lee had of've been on the ivorry keys though :(I think Elvis would've like this except for Jerry Lee.Ya'll know he went to Elvis's in 76 or 77 brandishing a gun!!??!!
Jerry & Cash were so jelous of him and Roy & Carl weren't. I think it's nuts how Carl and Roy are dressed as him! I mean they practically went into ELvis' closet! You should also look up some 70's shots of DOnny Osmond on stage, he practically dressed in Elvis' jumpsuit.
@nycstef75 elvis and the osmonds brothers was great friends elvis used to call the osmonds brothers mother up just to talk to her it was said that she reminded him of his mother and yes elvis gave them the name of the guy who made the outfits that he made for elvis, so elvis told the osmond brothers he thought they would look great in the outfits mostly because of the confort and style, alot of people don't know these things but should read up on things before jumping the gun
@harlesslee yes elvis is at rest but his music will live on and on now there is only one of these guys left since this was done we lost them all but jerry lee lewis the last of the great ones and sun records sam phillips is now gone
During Sun's early years, Sonny James and a young steel player, Rocky Caple, had steady gigs in Memphis. The Sun artists routinely shared the living room floor in that pair's apartment, taking quilts and light mattresses from the coat closet. When Rocky's band leader needed acts to fill out State Fair shows in the region, often five shows daily for five days, he would budget $1,000, which would get the entire Sun crew of 12 to 14. 25 shows for 12 of them for $1,000 = about $3.30 per show each..
4 legends pay tribute to the man who MADE rock and roll, the one and only Elvis Presley. As Buddy Holly said, if not for Elvis, none of the rest of us could have made it ....
Elvis with humility and class stated it best "You can call other Singers or Groups better than me,but don't ever call anyone else the King except Jesus Christ God the Son"
Opposite to what the world thinks or believes Elvis never liked being put on a pedestal above other other human beings like a god but rather just a human being born with a special God given talent in time and world history.
These guys were the hot dogs of the music industry - and that is said in the very best way. Elvis deserves this tribute. There will never be another era in music as when these guys and Elvis were on the radio. I revelled in their music and personalities. I am glad I had this time with them. Jerry Lee is still carrying on carrying on. Love to them all.
@Weidenberg I dont believe rock n roll would have became what it became without elvis' success, sure they did it before elvis but poor old bill wasnt gonna create anything likethe impact of the memphis flash. history prooves what the people wanted.
Thank you so much for posting this magnificent quartet of the greatest artists together. If you have time check out a song called "Presley Orbison & Cash" on my site. More than worthy, as a great tribute to some of the greatest artists that ever walked this planet! Going to play this again. Fantastic!!!
@gear2345 yea problaby. however carl perkins used a wig but im not sure when he started to use that, and to be honest i really dont care i think he looked like a rock n roll star with that, i mean hard to be bald standing in those outfits and at that time.. RIP all of u great wonderful men...roy,johnny,carl,buddy,elvis.....
(sweat, sweat) Lessee here.... there's THE Jerry Lee Lewis(aka, The Killer!), Roy Orbison(Who died recently), Carl Perkins(An awesome singer, besides The King of Rock 'n Roll), and they are AWESOME! So remember, and remember good. JLL, RO, CP, JC(Man in Black) I hate Sam Phillips.
Sam Phillips was the one who got them in the business, and in my opionion there would have been no Rock N Roll if it were not for Sam Phillips. Also "recently" is like a few months to a year, but remember, and remember good. Roy Orbison died in 1988, Carl Perkins died in 1998, Johnny Cash died in 2003, and Jerry Lee Lewis is the Last Man Standing.
I know what you're saying.. I cried when I heard Roy died in the Johnny Cash book (No name i guess) Carl Perkins was a cute guy, and mom's favorite rocker. Jerry Lee Lewis is a hunk, and I love him! I cried at the song 'Hurt' when Johnny sang it before his death date SO many times. He was a smoker..2 bad...
Johnny Cash shouldn't be put on a pedestal though, I've almost done that 12 timez, (Going on thirteen) But I LOVE JOHNNY CASH, 2! Thankz fer commenting to this guy.
The only person I put on a pedestal is Jesus Christ, but if you knew what Johnny Cash has done for me, you will understand why I call him the King Of Music. I was 6 months old and my dad, nana, grandpa and my uncle who wanted to have headphones placed on my head, and my mom said no, but then she said yes after realizing there was no harm in it. Johnny Cash at the time was the only singer I wanted to listen to at the time, and the only thing that would sooth me. Continue next comment.
I have Classic Autism, which is the lowest form of autism, and in most cases people have an IQ of 60 or below, but I have an IQ of 116, and I graduated mainstream on the AB honor roll from high school, and now take care of my daily funds and affairs. If it were not for him and his music, I would not be as high functioning as I am, because he was music therapy for me. God placed Johnny Cash in my life for a reason, and that was to help me become who I am today.
Besides all that he crossed all musical boundaries successfully, and made the music his own. He made his own sound and subgenre, and he was not a follower but a leader, as the result.
