What you say is true, although I'd rather have upfront racism and ignorance than passive aggressive bullshit I dealt with in Japan. I am sorry that you had to experience that. But as you said, there are classes of people. There are a good number of cultured people of the mid to upper class that are fascinated by foreigners and don't hate us. Same can be said about Japan. I draw up the comparison because I ran into a lot of Japan-lovers who blindly love Japan and hate on Korea.
Those people fascinated with foreigners are actually some of the most annoying. They treat you like an alien, don't trust you, constantly try to pay for you even when you insist (I know this sounds good but it really makes you feel like an object), etc... I could go on and on but Korean and Japanese people will generally (not all) treat you like you aren't even there, are a child, or as a god. They can't just treat you normal. You're just a curio object to show off to friends.
It does take a while to crack their shell and be treated normally but hey, they're in a world where foreigners are...well...foreigners. We are fortunate to live in the states (I assume you live in the states?) and we take diversity for granted. When I lived in those two places and soon after I came back, I hated their guts. But upon reflecting, it wasn't so bad, and not everyone is like that. Also, there's really no dutch-pay in Asia-land, the host always covers.
Granted I was only able to make a few good "friends" in both of those countries, I don't regret filtering through most of em to meet the few that I can trust. A lot of the time though, the fascination is genuine. They honestly have no effing clue.
