I did that with my 2ed brew after I saw it was going to blow over like that. I used my Siphon tube and a bowl of water as my new airlock and aved myself QUITE a mess.
Its the plan now for ALL my beers. The first 48 hours of fermentation is quite volitle in my opinion :O
Yeah, go to a 6.5Gal Primary and you shouldn't have to worry about blowoff. I've never come close to blowing out my S-bend airlock, even with high OG ales.
I always start off my initial fermentation with a blow off tube, especially in my 5 gallon carboy. Usually after a day or two you can swap it out with an airlock.
I didn't have such a hose connected to my carboy, just a valve.... next morning I had to scrape hops from the ceiling while sloshing through beer, and repaint the ceiling.
can someone please answer ? what would be an ideal temperature be for fermentation ?I heard that you can just leave it out in the sun. that's what I did yesterday and today I went and checked on it and it's fermentation was really good I think. so will leaving it in the sun work ?
Same thing happen to me my airlock with the robber cork went flying at 5:30 in the morning and I had to make a run off now im down to 4 1/2 gallons but its ok i added honey so it will be like a beer and a half.
@nodogyougay48 I've always used a inch round blow hose and never had a hose blow off. I've 34 and have been making all grain beer with my father since i was 17 years old.
@nodogyougay48 They always seem to blow off at 3:30-5:30 in the morning don't they? cant they ever blow off when we are nearby as to immeditly stop the problem? :P
There is not enough headroom. You need a bigger carboy or make a smaller batch. All that good krausen your loosing helps the whole process. That's good yeast that should fall and cake.
Its actually just beer that is getting pushed up and out of the bottle by the expanding co2 as a result of fermentation. Alcohol is simply another byproduct with the co2 in the fermentation process. The tube is ran down below the tank to keep from getting any airborn bacteria in the brew.
A bigger hose would work too, one that fits the carboy opening, and then you don't need the plug. Always works for me anyway. Cool vid though, how did the beer turn out?
the same thing happened to me on my batch where the foam started to burst out the top. Unfortunately I had a standard airlock, so I sat next to my carboy cleaning suds off of the floor for an hour :P

No, that's everything going through the tube. That's a bad thing.

Was the end of your blowoff tube above the water in your bucket? DIVE! DIVE! Gotta get that thing under water to prevent air from coming back in.

It didn't look like it, but it was under the water. I am working on getting a bigger fermenter now, that should take care of the blowoff!
