I just watched the first episode, A man Called Ragan, which was a spinnoff from "Cheyenne." Ragan was a one-eyed, officially resigned US Marshall. The man he is hunting hires JD to kill Ragan. This and other oddities. This episode is available as a bit Torrent download.
In 1963, I was six years old, and always saw the promos for this series. I wanted to watch it, but it was a week day show, and I could not watch many of those. But NOW, thanks to Classictvcollector and You/Tube I can watch it ! I remember a line spoken by one of the stars of the show . "We can either put the whole town in jail, or kill them" ! This appears to be an outstanding series, that should be released on DVD.
Jack Webb Was Fired Then Got A job At Universal Studios to produce, direct and star in Dragnet a 1960's version as well as producing Adam 12,Emergency and other TV Shows done by Universal he left Universal And Signed With TV Distributor Worldvision set up shop at Goldwyn Studios In Hollywood produced Project UFO and Sam the shows today controlled by The Jack Webb Estate And NBC Universal Except Project UFO and Sam Controlled By CBS Television Distribution.
Jack Webb Taken over As Head of TV Production At Warner Bros During the 1963-64 Season he cancelled TV shows Except for 77 Sunset Strip. and new shows for september 1964. including no time for sergeants, wendy and me,the federal investigators,a drama starring bette davis and found enough time to produce and narrate a series The FBI in which he earned the personal thanks of J.Edgar Hoover.
You can find them at times on ebay but rumors are that WB might put these and other WB series on DVD and perhaps be shown on one of the western channels, Lawman should be on in 2010!!!!
This was the episode that got the show cancelled. The Shoot out scene, in a church sanctuary, drew a TON of viewer complaint mails to ABC. And the network dropped the show. BTW, it was spun off from "Cheyenne" in an episode titled "A Man Called Ragan". Clint Walker, who played "Cheyenne" did not appear in that episode.
The Dakotas came at the tail end of Warner Brother's first major venture into TV production, which began in 1955 with Cheyenne. Jack Webb became head of TV production for the studio for the 1963-64 season and cancelled virtually all the shows they ahd been doing, keeping 77 Sunset Strip but revamping it into something unrecognizable. That experiment quickly collapsed and other studios did more of the we saw for years afterwards.
This series also starred Chad Everett, who later played Dr. Joe Gannon on Medical Center (1969-1976, CBS). Everett, btw, is originally from my home state (Indiana).
Whatever happened to larry Ward - I saw him on several westerns as a guest star then - poof - he's gone. Poor guy, must have traded in his spurs for a real estate license.
The show was cancelled because chad chased a suspect into a church and killed him with a shotgun there were letters off protest [I wonder if this is the beginning of that episode that we are watching right here ] .

I think he passed away some time ago. He also guest-starred a couple of times on Cannon in the '70s.

Larry Ward died in February 1985. The only appearances I ever saw him besides The Dakotas was "Time Tunnel" and "MASH"

He wrote some plays and was also in the outer limits and the rat patrol .

Larry Ward had a small role in Hombre where he played a soldier. Richard Boone ran him off and took his seat on the stage.

@spacepatrolman This is, in fact, the episode that triggered the protest mail that led ABC to cancel "The Dakotas"
