Winter Assault was one of the most favorite games I ever played when I was younger and best out of the series of dawn of wars. And the whole of thought of being one of those IG about to assault a chaos world in the campaign gave me the shivers
although they have thier differences in doctrine and such, the Guard could not hold the imperium without the presence of the Space Marines and the space marines could not expand the imperium or overcome impossible odds with out the support of the guard. if one were to fall the imperium would fall. or at least thats my opinion(not aimed at anyone so dont get in a fit if u disagree)
We suffer uncoutable losses, Our victories are beyand any number . We are the Guard . You will find us on any world, On any battle field . We are the Guard . We live, We fight, We die . We are the Guard . Our courage is limiltless, Our fear is to fail . We are the Guard . The Imperor gives us life, One day we give it back . Form snow caped mountins, jungles, deserts, and even through time and space we patrol the stars protecting humanity . We are ''THE IPMEARIAL GUARD'' !
Nahh, the only real difference between Catachan and anyone other guard is their looks and background story; they're mechanically the same. By rights, though, Catachan should at LEAST get 1 more point of tough...after all, they come from a death world :P
The only good thing about guard infantry is the sheer amount of heavy weapons that they can bring to the field. 4 heavy weapons squads, each toting 3 heavy weapons...5 guard squads each with a heavy weapon...platoon command squad I -think- can take a heavy weapon...plus the special weapons squad, PLUS the special weapon that each guardsmen squad gets...you're looking at a massive amount of really hurty weapons...
Well, the only real thing regular guardsmen have aside from all the special firepower is the new orders system. First rank, FIRE! Second rank, FIRE! is useful, especially if you combine 5 squads to make 1 50 man squad...then you've got, what...somewhere in the area of 100 shots at long range, and 150 shots close range? It's the only way regular guardsmen with lasguns stand a chance. That 50 man guard squad would also be able to eat any single 10 man squad, as long as IG charged.
Imperial Guard kicks ass. It has the best vehicles, and its one of the closest armies to our modern troops. They'r morale is easily breaked, but add a general and research retreat=death and they will be UNstopable.
One thing I missed about the russes they had initially in WA is that they hit more than one target with their battle cannon. They were a superb anti-infantry tank...but they either patched that out of WA or didn't include that in the next 2 games...I forget which. People complained and complained about the IG being 'overpowered', but they never were...and they just kept getting more and more nerfed.
@Alamandorious yeah i know in the first DoW game it fired high explosive shells now it fires armor piercing shells which can only hit one target at a time and isn't really that good against masses of infantry
it was probably because back in DoW all they had were guardsmen and leman russ tanks so i guess they wanted the leman russ to perform both as a main battle tank and an anti infantry artillery piece
it kinda all changed in WA when they had basilisks
Actually, they had direct-fire shells in Winter Assault that hurt multiple models in an infantry squad, initially. They changed them to only hitting one unit at a time...in other words, they turned it into a Leman Russ Vanquisher, but without the kickass anti-tank gun.
well I'd like to see the Guardsman who does not turn and flee as drop pods and lance strikes hit the center of the formations...even Basilisk drivers have feelings
@ShieldOfTommorrow well i'd like to see your oh so precious space marines fight all of the Imperium's fights
the guard have the heaviest tanks, the biggest ships in the imperial navy, all the ammunition and firepower humanity has to offer, and all the men to hold all that stuff a thousand fold
now tell me besides human frailty what enemy of man are they not meant for?
a space marine can kill a guardsman but he cannot replace him
well I do see the immense value of the Imperial Guard. What this discussion started as was a comparison of the combat prowess of the Guardsmen and the Space Marines. You seemed, at least at first glance, to believe that the GM would kick SM ass anyday. That is why I decided to step into this.
The GMs get the majority of the "normal" work done, but against extremely dangerous psykers or daemons, we need the Emperor's finest.
@ShieldOfTommorrow well if you ask me if all the SMs went against all the IG the SMs would still probably lose in the long run though they would kill a lot of guardsmen
though in my opinion the guard can take on daemons and psykers but it'll just be too painfully costly for them and that's when the SMs come in
with the immense manpower of the Imperial Guard nothings impossible only impractical
I beg to differ on the Guardsmen taking on Daemons. I have yet to see a single instance in them singlehandedly defeating daemons without the help of the Inquisition and / or the Grey Knights. (which I in this context refer to as a separate entity)
And the SM battle barges are extremely agile and heavy hitting, whereas, as I recall, most of the IG vessels tend to be more sluggish. And they do not possess any boarding craft if I am not mistaken. But space combat is not my area
also I'd like to address the "with the immense manpower of the Imperial Guard nothings impossible only impractical"
if losses become astronomical, morale will suffer no matter the amount of fear indoctrination and presence of Commissars. Morale loss will reduce combat efficiency and as such, throwing bodies into the grinder will eventually fail in itself with the result of loosing way too many soldiers for dubious results
Melta's are limited range...Leman russes are singularly able to to eat whole marine squads for lunch before they get close. If the marines got close enough to do the 2d6 penetration, or got rear armor, then yes...they would stand a very good chance with melta's. But if they're outside the 2d6 penetration range, and facing front armor, it's unlikely they'll do much thanks to the 14 front armor of a russ.
Even then, you're talking tanks with km's for range versus something that really is short range.
And don't forget, even an SM battlebarge is limited; they don't have torpedo's, because of the Horus Heresy, so the Imperial navy would be able to sit back and pelt them with torpedo's. Now, if the battlebarge managed to stay unfettered in orbit, then yes, there would be mass hysteria due to orbital bombardment...but if the Imperial Navy still had a presence, it would be harder
Imperial Guards are the backbone of the Imperuim without them the Space Marine and Sister of Battle won't stand a chance of defending and attacking the other races
i dont see any. the imperial guards men have weak armor so yes they die but imperial guards arent know for combat. they are known for tanks and numbers. they won didn't they?
@nailkid22 what do you mean? they destroyed the Predator tanks didn't they? and hell with all that firepower those defilers and the whole chaos base will soon follow

and guardsmen are good infantri in defense
