Practice on what was needed to incrementally increase his abilities in a number of academic and other areas. I think of ADHD as a disability that your own behavior is getting in the way of your own learning process, and if you subside it to a critical point the ADHD person can excel and do so very quickly as they are not stupid, but as they age and the more fundamental practice time they miss the farther behind they get so their behavior sabotages them creativity and academically. Meds are good
Academically he was sort of like a Forest Gump type student. On the border so he was not Sped but if you saw him and know about Sped his behavioral and organizational traits were off the chart so in that regard he was HIGHLY Sped but you don't get into sped based on those but rather because your reading score was too low relative to your grade level. In the end, with my efforts, he fundamentally did better in reading and yes I did foster his creativity too since as he could focus he could
My step son has it and yes he in fact does need medication because I live with him on a daily basis with and have lived him without it and I see a marked difference in his focus, ability and essentially, he has Asbergers, a mild form, and takes Concerta and it is a magic pill. I have also taught a child who wasn't on meds and did not qualify for Sped and I told his grandmother and the difference for that child was night and day and his grades increased from D to high B average.
