I do like this ending better than the newer movie's, but I think this is still weaker than the book's ending. I just don't like the way they used the music in this movie; in the book it was more dramatic since it seemed like the only noise in the woods was the gunshot, but in this movie, the shot is followed by loud music which, while dramatic, seems to interupt the actual impact of the scene.
George had nothing. It was just Lennie and George. They had each other, but that was it. Nothing to really give each other, yet at the end, George was able to give Lennie the world, and in the end he had to take away his own.
@smartpizza3 Agreed, it's all about how the move looks, not about the acting these days. You can make a movie look beautiful, but it will suck if the actors can't act.
i think the Lennie in this version is better then in the newer one. but in the newer one, they nailed George and Curley and nearly all the characters.
@Zophiia100 Lennie would have messed up again, he always does out of an innocent ignorance. George realized that this time, if they didn't escape, Lennie might be captured, and separated from George, his best friend. Lennie could be tortured and ridiculed in a prison, and since he has a childlike understanding, it would have been horrible for him. So, george puts Lennie in his "happy place" and ends his life. it was an act of love.
@lookejr Yeah, Aaron Copeland really sucks - it's a shame Stevie Wonder wasn't around to compose the proper music for the scene. Give me a break!!!!!!!
Truly classic! One of the few movies that followed the book almost exactly.
There was a movie made shortly after this when Bob Hope tells Lon Chaney's character "Why don't you go play with your rabbits!" . An onscreen nod to the brilliance of this story.
This was made in 1939 (THE golden year of movies). It was worthy of an Oscar. Unfortunately, "Gone With the Wind" was also made, and "The Wizard of Oz" and about 20 other classics, all made in the same year. Anyone who thinks this version is not a great version does not know cinema. That is not an opinion, that is a fact.
Can you see the 'Hope & Change' Lenny? Well I um......I can't see it George. Look harder, can you see it? um...um.....CAN YOU SEE IT LENNY? YES YES i CAN SEE IT GEORGE IT'S RIGHT OVER THE*BLAM*
i hate when they change the ending - aren't they supposed to go get a drink after George tosses the gun? What the hell is with the Sherriff?? We wasn't in the ending. What a crock.
The Scene represents how Lennie is so excited for a dream that cant happen. George being the friend he is knows that telling lennie this would kill him on the inside and does what has to be done.
@wastedproperty this was sad and built up. George didn't look like a villian, he looked like a friend who had to do what he had to do. I will agree with you about the new film though, george did shoot lennie to quickly.
first mute the video, then put the marker at 6:40. once you are there open up this video /watch?v=TN2s10c8WGY in another of your windows. play the music as you hit the play button on 6:40 and it becomes one of the most epic yet sad scenes possible. it gives the scene more of a sad feeling than the actors talking in tthis do
Both movies did the last scene horribly. All talented actors, but it doesn't capture the sadness like it does in the book. In this one, the music takes away from it. In the 1993 version, it happens too quickly and suddenly, without enough emotion behind it.
Coming this Fall - A re-imagining of John Steinbecks "Of Mice and Men." George and Lenny, two world class hit men out on the lamb, having to pretend they are simple farm hands. "George, I need to talk to Mr. Rabbit!" "Damnit Lenny NO! We ain't doin' that kinda work no more... now give me some heroin!"
You thought you knew the story... LENNY NO AHHHHH!
"I Lenny... will tend Rabbits!"
Of Mice and Men, and blood... this film has not yet been rated.
@CaptainAmerica5013 His name, my buddy is Lon Chaney, Jr. He is most famous for playing the original Wolf Man back in the 1940s. He is spectacular as Lennie and as the Wolf Man.
@TheDorr71 It is a lot of money on amazon.com. It is not the best version of the story but it is good for what it is. I prefer Chaney, Jr. and Meredith though.
@freddy3911 Oh yes,Burgess Meredith was such a great one.Younger people only know him in "Rocky", but he was also known for "Twilight Zone" series",Magic"(Anthony Hopkins), and in many character actor roles earlier in his life. Oh yes,and playing the Penquin in Batman.(TV) This version of Mice and Men certainly the best.
I don't understand the wrapping of the luger in the cloth. It isn't like they dusted for prints back then, and for that matter it wasn't as if they didn't know who shot him. It just sort of ruined the mood for me when they did that. Pedantic I know but just so anachronistic and pointless.
@jamesbloomfield89 Hi James, I wasn't actually referring to the firing of the weapon, but when George handed the pistol over to who I presume was the Sheriff. The Sheriff handled the weapon with a cloth as seen done by officers in fairly modern times with the advent of finger printing. Although it had been around in police work for around 30 years I don't think it was used in backwoods areas such as this. There was also no doubt as to who had the weapon making the prints a mute point anyway.
@skepticMinded haha your right i paused it before the proper ending as i just wanted to see the shooting compared to the remake, sorry to jump down your throat!!!
It makes me sad that a lot of people dismiss this version because it's older and, therefore, it can't be as realistic. Acting styles were different then, but not any better or worse necessarily. And, whether you like it or not, this one is considered THE definitive version of the story (and I think justifiably so).
@TheRAH14 I find this version THE best. The more recent version wasn't like Steinbeck's version of George at all.Burgess Meredith wasn't appreciated for being a great actor-but he was.
@TheRAH14 On the back of the DVD case, it says Steinbeck brought the director of this movie on a field trip to the ranch that inspired the events of the story.
The book left a powerful impact, but I don't think the classic or the newer movie quite got the feel right. George was stumbling with the gun in the book, more hesitant, and it gave a greater sense of sadness
tht cheesy music ruins the mood, the newer one is much sadder and has more of a hard hitting end to it, espescially when Gary is next to the dead body and hitting the gun to his head and gasping, i cried T_T
@SadGothEmoKid Cheesy music? Hmm, have to disagree with you there. I think the music is one of the best aspects of this film, up there with some of the great film scores of all time.
@TheRAH14 well we can agree on the score but i dont think the music fits thats all, we can agree to disagree and say it was a good film either way :D xx
Out of context this seems as though George betrays Lennie whereas in the newer one there's more of a sense of sadness leading up to the gunshot. That's why I prefer the newer one
I definitely prefer the 1939 version. Much closer to the story. The 1992 version is pretty good, and John Malkovich is definitely better as Lennie, but I think I like this version better. It involves less intensity like the 1992 version (Curley's hand is crushed quite gruesomely, Curley's wife screams a helluva lot more) and focusses more on the drama.
@quickscopa123 Because lennie was very strong and had braind damage.. He didnt have any concept of his strength and kept getting into trouble (Killing, Hurting things) and George got tired of having to keep leaving to save lennie.. And he didnt want lennie in the world on his own and he didnt want lennie to get hurt so he killed him :'( -- 1993 Version is Sadder in my Opinion !
This music was so dumb it was like a ragtime suspense film where the murderer is sneaking up on his victim. That is not what the book meant to portray at all.
I dont understand why everyone likes the newer version. this one had george's pure character in the story, and Lennie was far more realistic and close to the story compared to the remake
@ThaPhillyPhan I agree. I've actually been around handicapped people before, and while Malkovich did a great job, Chaney was by far the most realistic of the two. I don't get how people accuse Chaney of overacting when Malkovich gave the character this overly-whiny speech pattern that just...He did a good job, but I was always aware that it was him acting the part. It's pretty tough to believe that this is the guy who played the Wolfman, but lo and behold, there he is, and he's fantastic.
Thumbs up if your English class is watching the 1991 version!

y did he shoot him?
quickscopa123 1 year ago
@quickscopa123 Because lennie was very strong and had braind damage.. He didnt have any concept of his strength and kept getting into trouble (Killing, Hurting things) and George got tired of having to keep leaving to save lennie.. And he didnt want lennie in the world on his own and he didnt want lennie to get hurt so he killed him :'( -- 1993 Version is Sadder in my Opinion !

Yep, Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolfman) plays Lennie. According to historians, this was his favorite role apart from the Wolf Man.

This music was so dumb it was like a ragtime suspense film where the murderer is sneaking up on his victim. That is not what the book meant to portray at all.

@xdashlydia It's a revolver... You have to pull the hammer back AND pull the trigger...

The way he killed him, it looked more like murder than protecting him like it did in the new one.

I dont understand why everyone likes the newer version. this one had george's pure character in the story, and Lennie was far more realistic and close to the story compared to the remake

@ThaPhillyPhan dont agree with you at all.
Tiffany1327 1 year ago
@ThaPhillyPhan I agree. I've actually been around handicapped people before, and while Malkovich did a great job, Chaney was by far the most realistic of the two. I don't get how people accuse Chaney of overacting when Malkovich gave the character this overly-whiny speech pattern that just...He did a good job, but I was always aware that it was him acting the part. It's pretty tough to believe that this is the guy who played the Wolfman, but lo and behold, there he is, and he's fantastic.
