  • Thumbs up if your English class is watching the 1991 version!

  • JON TRON S M D

  • I do like this ending better than the newer movie's, but I think this is still weaker than the book's ending. I just don't like the way they used the music in this movie; in the book it was more dramatic since it seemed like the only noise in the woods was the gunshot, but in this movie, the shot is followed by loud music which, while dramatic, seems to interupt the actual impact of the scene.

  • I was sent by Lord JonTron

  • George had nothing. It was just Lennie and George. They had each other, but that was it. Nothing to really give each other, yet at the end, George was able to give Lennie the world, and in the end he had to take away his own.

  • Good lord method acting has improved since this era....

Lennie is basically just reading lines as if he were a charicature of a dope. I like the new movie alot better.

  • @JonTronShow lol too right

  • @JonTronShow AND THEN LENNY! WE FEED THE RABB-- BANG! AHAHAHAHAHA

  • @JonTronShow Agreed, not to mention the cast was a bit more refined.

I like both versions, but if tasked with a choice, the latest one deffinately pulls ahead.

  • @JonTronShow Oh my God, it's JonTron. All bow down.

  • i dont like the new i could barely understan lennie

  • Comment removed

  • you defintely felt more sorry for lennie in the newer version just because of his looks and speech

  • Lame.

  • Great movie classics.....

  • this relates more to the book, but i like the newest one better.

  • I prefer this ending but overall the recent one was better

  • how did lennie end up in the water after getting shot when he was like 5 feet away and on the other side of that log..?

  • does anybody realize that george is mickey from rocky 1,2, and 3? lol jw

  • @rockersbymyside yep. and The Penguin from the old Batman TV show.

  • just finished this book today in english class...instant favorite

  • indian jones?

    IS THAT YOU!?

  • this ending is certainly follows the book more than the '92 version..

  • Lol

  • My English teacher will be PISSED when I go to class tommorow and say the ending lmfao ima be in some shit

  • @Idkwat2pu0t ikr, i searched up lennie of mice and men and saw the ending and im in the middle of the book for english :(

  • I hate the ending!

  • Just finished this in English.

  • I cried reading it and I cried harder watching it :'( I have a friend who is mentally slow. And I could never imagine having to shoot her...

  • ;(

  • it was georges last act of friendshio

  • I started crying. This is so sad image having to kill your friend that was mentally disabled :'(

  • this situation could have been avoided if they had a sassy gay friend. just sayin.

  • very sad book Greate film very sad :-( poor lenny

  • They actually used a LUGER in this one.

  • This time period is were actually good movies were made but now a days the movies are shitty no one has good taste any more

  • @smartpizza3 Agreed, it's all about how the move looks, not about the acting these days. You can make a movie look beautiful, but it will suck if the actors can't act.

  • 13 people dont get to tend the rabbits

  • this is the saddest 9 min of my life............ in a good way

  • @4everGaga1 Tears still fill my eyes, watching this..

  • @zipper179 i know it gets me everytime

  • I can see it! *BOOM*

    Fatality

  • Music all the time aaah

  • thumbs up if you're studying this OR have studied this in English :)

  • @Erica33x

yup, in sweden we read this book and discussed it

  • @Erica33x yup

  • @Erica33x

Yep, we haven't even finished it yet, why did I watch this?!

  • @Erica33x Thats the only reason why Im watching this :)

  • i think the Lennie in this version is better then in the newer one. but in the newer one, they nailed George and Curley and nearly all the characters.

  • The newer version is in fact much better than this one in regards to Lennie's death scene at the least.

  • I like the new version MUCH better... Gary Sinise makes the BEST George. And Curley isn't enough of a douche bag in this version. xD

  • George didnt have to actually kill lenny he could of just ran away again with him!!! :/

  • @Zophiia100 Lennie would have messed up again, he always does out of an innocent ignorance. George realized that this time, if they didn't escape, Lennie might be captured, and separated from George, his best friend. Lennie could be tortured and ridiculed in a prison, and since he has a childlike understanding, it would have been horrible for him. So, george puts Lennie in his "happy place" and ends his life. it was an act of love.

  • @hemidemisemiquaverr Right, you are! And, at 67, my eyes still fill with tears, for it's a painfully sad, but, beautiful 9 minutes..

  • Awwwww George...... You Got Me!!!!

  • The Penguin vs. The Wolfman! Round goes to Penguin...

  • Ya know, sometimes, I love music like this. But, god, it just kills this whole scene for me.

  • @lookejr Yeah, Aaron Copeland really sucks - it's a shame Stevie Wonder wasn't around to compose the proper music for the scene. Give me a break!!!!!!!

  • who doesn't love the overly dramatic DUN DIUN DUN

  • Truly classic! One of the few movies that followed the book almost exactly.

There was a movie made shortly after this when Bob Hope tells Lon Chaney's character "Why don't you go play with your rabbits!" . An onscreen nod to the brilliance of this story.

  • And then Burgess Merideth says....GET UP YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!...Cause Gergie loves ya

  • This was made in 1939 (THE golden year of movies). It was worthy of an Oscar. Unfortunately, "Gone With the Wind" was also made, and "The Wizard of Oz" and about 20 other classics, all made in the same year. Anyone who thinks this version is not a great version does not know cinema. That is not an opinion, that is a fact.

  • @parsonsrules yes this 1939 version is the best one, later ones cannot compete

  • in this version its shit that slim tells george to do it. the whole point is that its his decision.

  • The other version is better

  • Dude, what if he missed? (:

  • Can you see the 'Hope & Change' Lenny? Well I um......I can't see it George. Look harder, can you see it? um...um.....CAN YOU SEE IT LENNY? YES YES i CAN SEE IT GEORGE IT'S RIGHT OVER THE*BLAM*

  • @bvs1216 Ya, we all fell for that one. Hahaha....

  • @decs13vidz the big man in mile is the gr8 kalli in wwe wrestling

  • the boo0k's better

  • i hate when they change the ending - aren't they supposed to go get a drink after George tosses the gun? What the hell is with the Sherriff?? We wasn't in the ending. What a crock.

  • This version sucks. It doesn't even feel dramatic.

  • @thesir27 are you kidding? this version is ten times better

  • george is one cold mutha fucka

  • 7:01

  • Should of hired a lawyer

  • How about you get me a defense attorney rather than a bullet?

    Call 1-800 it wasnt me

  • Meh, the new one was so much more dramatic, this one he fucking hides the gun when he sees it,

Sort of comedic, ruins the whole purpose.

  • moral of the story: There is a difference between what is right and what is easy

  • The Scene represents how Lennie is so excited for a dream that cant happen. George being the friend he is knows that telling lennie this would kill him on the inside and does what has to be done.

  • @RiseinPhoenix Well in the book, George describes the dream as very possible.

  • @RiseinPhoenix that... and the fact that George doesn't want Curly to get Lennie because hell kill him slowly and painfully.

A shotgun shell to the gut isn't the best way to die.

  • This is terrible. George doesn't even look upset.

  • @wastedproperty this was sad and built up. George didn't look like a villian, he looked like a friend who had to do what he had to do. I will agree with you about the new film though, george did shoot lennie to quickly.

  • :'(

  • I didn't like that they showed George take the gun.

  • @calderon2249 I agree. It kinda takes away from the ending.

  • @calderon2249

i agree it is more surprising when he pulls the gun out

  • 1992 version is what I enjoyed more because film work has developed a lot since 1939 - 1992.

  • first mute the video, then put the marker at 6:40. once you are there open up this video /watch?v=TN2s10c8WGY in another of your windows. play the music as you hit the play button on 6:40 and it becomes one of the most epic yet sad scenes possible. it gives the scene more of a sad feeling than the actors talking in tthis do

  • Both movies did the last scene horribly. All talented actors, but it doesn't capture the sadness like it does in the book. In this one, the music takes away from it. In the 1993 version, it happens too quickly and suddenly, without enough emotion behind it.

  • @WAXstudios agreed

  • Did he shoot him w/a silver bullet?

  • 1993 version is better...

  • Lennie is Rocky :)

  • What is it with Steinbeck and big dumb retard characters?

  • Coming this Fall - A re-imagining of John Steinbecks "Of Mice and Men." George and Lenny, two world class hit men out on the lamb, having to pretend they are simple farm hands. "George, I need to talk to Mr. Rabbit!" "Damnit Lenny NO! We ain't doin' that kinda work no more... now give me some heroin!"

You thought you knew the story... LENNY NO AHHHHH!

    "I Lenny... will tend Rabbits!"

Of Mice and Men, and blood... this film has not yet been rated.

  • Whoever played Lennie is wayyy better than John Malkovich.

  • @CaptainAmerica5013 His name, my buddy is Lon Chaney, Jr. He is most famous for playing the original Wolf Man back in the 1940s. He is spectacular as Lennie and as the Wolf Man.

  • I ALMOST STARTED CRYING WHEN I READ THE END OF THE BOOK:(

  • Now he can pet all the soft things he wants without hurting nobody. Poor fella.

  • why did the sheriff rap the gun in hankercheif, was there fingerprinting back then?

  • @nottinmatterz2day He's not the sheriff... that's George. He wanted to hide the gun so Lennie didn't know that he was gonna shoot him.

  • @thaFalkon I'm talking about the sheriff, at 8:26

  • @nottinmatterz2day Oh, idk.

  • Robert Blake was on T.V. in a special show.He played George, and was very good,I have to admit. Can't find that program anywhere.

  • @TheDorr71 It is a lot of money on amazon.com. It is not the best version of the story but it is good for what it is. I prefer Chaney, Jr. and Meredith though.

  • @freddy3911 Oh yes,Burgess Meredith was such a great one.Younger people only know him in "Rocky", but he was also known for "Twilight Zone" series",Magic"(Anthony Hopkins), and in many character actor roles earlier in his life. Oh yes,and playing the Penquin in Batman.(TV) This version of Mice and Men certainly the best.

  • @TheDorr71 i rember it was great blake did a great job

  • In this version George acts like a freaking psycho killer. XD

  • @Kaweebo I resent that statement and find it offensive. This is without a doubt the saddest ending to any movie I've ever seen.

  • @Kaweebo lol well he is played by lon chaney jr (The Wolf Man) XD

  • I don't understand the wrapping of the luger in the cloth. It isn't like they dusted for prints back then, and for that matter it wasn't as if they didn't know who shot him. It just sort of ruined the mood for me when they did that. Pedantic I know but just so anachronistic and pointless.

  • @skepticMinded in those times they were not allowed to show a gun firing but could show a gun after the shooting or before, studying this at uni!

  • @jamesbloomfield89 Hi James, I wasn't actually referring to the firing of the weapon, but when George handed the pistol over to who I presume was the Sheriff. The Sheriff handled the weapon with a cloth as seen done by officers in fairly modern times with the advent of finger printing. Although it had been around in police work for around 30 years I don't think it was used in backwoods areas such as this. There was also no doubt as to who had the weapon making the prints a mute point anyway.

  • @skepticMinded haha your right i paused it before the proper ending as i just wanted to see the shooting compared to the remake, sorry to jump down your throat!!!

  • @jamesbloomfield89 lol, I didn't take it offensively, no worries

  • It makes me sad that a lot of people dismiss this version because it's older and, therefore, it can't be as realistic. Acting styles were different then, but not any better or worse necessarily. And, whether you like it or not, this one is considered THE definitive version of the story (and I think justifiably so).

  • @TheRAH14 I find this version THE best. The more recent version wasn't like Steinbeck's version of George at all.Burgess Meredith wasn't appreciated for being a great actor-but he was.

  • @TheRAH14 On the back of the DVD case, it says Steinbeck brought the director of this movie on a field trip to the ranch that inspired the events of the story.

  • Bah god- and with a Luger no less.

  • damn george, if u wanted to tend the rabbits, why didnt u say so?

  • The book left a powerful impact, but I don't think the classic or the newer movie quite got the feel right. George was stumbling with the gun in the book, more hesitant, and it gave a greater sense of sadness

  • tht cheesy music ruins the mood, the newer one is much sadder and has more of a hard hitting end to it, espescially when Gary is next to the dead body and hitting the gun to his head and gasping, i cried T_T

  • @SadGothEmoKid Cheesy music? Hmm, have to disagree with you there. I think the music is one of the best aspects of this film, up there with some of the great film scores of all time.

  • @TheRAH14 well we can agree on the score but i dont think the music fits thats all, we can agree to disagree and say it was a good film either way :D xx

  • Out of context this seems as though George betrays Lennie whereas in the newer one there's more of a sense of sadness leading up to the gunshot. That's why I prefer the newer one

  • was the guy on the right at 0:30 from the 1994 one with John Malcovich cos he looks like Candy the swamper from that film

  • Poor Lennie. He had to get put down ol' yeller style.

  • what are you doing man? Thats Lennie!

  • This is the best version. Lon Chaney gives the ultimate "Lenny" performance.

  • why does curley find a hat it says lennie took his hat off after those halucionations!

  • I like how Slim is supportive in this version

  • Lon Cheney Jr could have been an Oscar nominee in any other year.

  • lennie is so funny i started crying when he dies tho!!!!! :(((((((((((

  • :,( *sniff*

  • ITS LENNIE NOT LENNY!!!!!!

  • @humankiller100 simpsons lol

  • I CAN SEE IT. RIGHT OVER THERE. GEORGE, I CAN SEE I-

  • I definitely prefer the 1939 version. Much closer to the story. The 1992 version is pretty good, and John Malkovich is definitely better as Lennie, but I think I like this version better. It involves less intensity like the 1992 version (Curley's hand is crushed quite gruesomely, Curley's wife screams a helluva lot more) and focusses more on the drama.

  • this version follows the book closer

  • this end is crap compared to the newer version

  • the music in these sort of films is so fucking annoying

  • I like this Lennie's performance of this scene better, but I prefer the 1993's George.

    Just ain't fair....

  • George Kills Lennie :O OHH MAA DAYZ!

  • The 1993 version was quite good, but i think this looks better tbh. the 1993 ending was almost comical, but this once just seems so much sadder.

  • He gets to tend the rabbits of heaven:)

  • @Treepelt if only heaven was real tho

  • @BadAssLaner :/ what?

  • @15youngblack its a myth

  • @BadAssLaner y do u say that?

  • @15youngblack Cus of science

  • @BadAssLaner lol

  • y did he shoot him?

  • @quickscopa123 Because lennie was very strong and had braind damage.. He didnt have any concept of his strength and kept getting into trouble (Killing, Hurting things) and George got tired of having to keep leaving to save lennie.. And he didnt want lennie in the world on his own and he didnt want lennie to get hurt so he killed him :'( -- 1993 Version is Sadder in my Opinion !

  • @FillionDollarSmile yeah id say it is too thanks 4 the help xx

  • Yep, Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolfman) plays Lennie. According to historians, this was his favorite role apart from the Wolf Man.

  • 1993 or 1939

  • @PaintMyW0rld 1993 is sadder.. But i dont like either.. I hate tragedy films ! ! !

  • This music was so dumb it was like a ragtime suspense film where the murderer is sneaking up on his victim. That is not what the book meant to portray at all.

  • 1:53 Never tuck a pistol into your pants, unless you *want* to shoot yourself in the crotch.

  • @xdashlydia It's a revolver... You have to pull the hammer back AND pull the trigger...

  • The way he killed him, it looked more like murder than protecting him like it did in the new one.

  • Malkovich> Chanet

  • anti-climatic as hell

  • LMFAO!!!! HORRIBLE! newer version kicks ass.

  • lmao this movie was terrible, the newer version and the book is better.

  • 7:02

  • I dont understand why everyone likes the newer version. this one had george's pure character in the story, and Lennie was far more realistic and close to the story compared to the remake

  • @ThaPhillyPhan Old souls are hard to find.

  • @ThaPhillyPhan dont agree with you at all.

  • @ThaPhillyPhan I agree. I've actually been around handicapped people before, and while Malkovich did a great job, Chaney was by far the most realistic of the two. I don't get how people accuse Chaney of overacting when Malkovich gave the character this overly-whiny speech pattern that just...He did a good job, but I was always aware that it was him acting the part. It's pretty tough to believe that this is the guy who played the Wolfman, but lo and behold, there he is, and he's fantastic.

  • Lenny must of flew into the pond with that shot

  • I can see why Burgess Meredith was cast as The Penguin just looksa s his nose

  • Worst acting ever.

  • @ICantThinkOfAName36 Worst overacting ever.
