Go to Video FX's then click 'Channel Blend' then to get that black and white effect I think I either used 'Distribute Red Channel' or 'Distribute Blue Channel' I hope I helped

Btw I totally know what you mean, some people use like effects for the whole entire video! O.o that in the end you have no idea which character is even in the video since they used like too many effects or they use so many effects that it just kills your eyes O.o I hope that made sense and I hope I don't sound crazy XD
