Midna is a WAY cooler helper than Navi, just putting that out there. At least she isn't like "HEY! LISTEN!", instead we get barely audible nonsensical phrases said by Midna whenever she talks.

The reason link doesn't speak is because Shigeru Miyamoto wants to keep him the kind of hero that players can identify with and become one with of sorts. He wants US to be his voice, well his mental voice at least, when we play. Also the reason he starts off in the game not as some powerful warrior, but as a normal person.
