I don't suppose you know where I can find a clip of the episode in which they're conducting mock attacks against the Melbourne and defending against mock A-4 Skyhawk strafing runs?
I was living on Cairns, North Queenland in the '70's... they used my house to film scenes for an episode about an illegal immigrant that one of the patrol boat crew had sneaked into Ausralia...
It took them two days to shoot a sequence that lasted about 3 minutes in the episode.... It was great to watch the setup process back then ...
@pyrofella Wow, that must have been really interesting. I would love it if a show like that would be filmed in my house :-) Do you remember the name of the episode?
Unless you recorded the series back in the 80' you can forget about it on DVD. When the ABC's broadcast's rights expired, Channel 10 did repeat some of the series 1 episodes in the early 90's, but apart from that nothing has been released. A pity really because this was one of my favourite shows as a kid and in part one the reasons why I joined the navy. Fate a funny thing, who'd knew I'd be serving on a patrol boat some day.
I don't know how far naval vessel technology has come since then, but that real patrol boat that I rode on in 1979 (from Darwin Harbour) just like the one in this video went pretty fast (30+ knots?) in pursuit mode, with the bow up in the air and the seawater splashing back onto the rear of the boat. A civilian guest like me had to hold on to something if we didn't want to get thrown overboard. A really memorable experience.
From an officer serving on an Armidale-class vessel, trust me the technology has come a long way in 30 years. Due to the difference in design and technology, you don't experience the sensation you mention as much. Having also served aboard a Freemantle-class vessels some years ago, it is something I actually don't miss; heavy swells can make even the most experienced crew sea sick believe it or not. However, the Armidale's are fantastic boats to work on -modern and comfortable
Not being regular navy, just an amateur yachtsman, I have to say that hitting the swell is one of the things that makes it fun - even though carrots and peas do start to fly about!!!
In fact its one of the things that makes the older boats look so great - sitting in a dining room chair in front of a TV screen ain't sailing!!
Wow... the memories all come flooding back! Living in Darwin (NT) at that the TV series was a hit, I also got to ride an a real patrol boat too! The newer "Sea Patrol" series owes its existence to "Patrol Boat". Thanks for posting!

It'd be great if whichever network has the rights to this now would just release. It's not like they're ever gonna make money out of it now.
