Amazing movie. Brutal ending. And yeah, I do feel bad for them a bit. It's sad that they were so desperate and out of their minds to stay together. But, what they did was still very wrong,
You're right about that scene, in spite of the horrible thing they do you cannot but feel still a sympathy for them both, especially because they were not allowed to see each other again after their imprisonment. It seems that they have not. But, they both live in Scotland now.... The diary seems to be lost, thrown away by the authorities after the trial. Murder weapon: same thing I guess. However, suppose they were stocked in a judicial archive back there in Christchurch... Go and look !
I found this movie slightly disturbing when I first watched it. You get into the unique storyline and find yourself never wanting the movie to end, then when this scene comes along you feel sympathetic for the mother yet still an avid fan of Pauline and Juliet for so many other reasons. Does anyone know where the diaries and murder weapon are now? And if they've been in contact since the murder?
Peter Jackson has said that shooting that final scene was so creepy. The actual spot was so frightenly silent that they ended up shooting the murder scene a few yards away. She was actually killed just on the other side of that tiny wooden plank bridge. I can't even imagine what it must have been like. No matter how many times I've watched this movie, I always get chills and wince when they kill her.
Anne Perry writes really well...but I will NEVER buy another book and financially support a murderer. I had read one of her books and then looked her up online! What a shock! That is so odd, because most mystery writers would be the last people to commit a crime, much less murder.
@seraduha1 i know!!! just saw the movie and the mothers scream left me in tears! i was out of this world sad to know this is based on a true story! to know such a cruel murder happened!
@alicemacf I know, that part is so sad! The girl is being all nice and saying "treat yourself", and her mom looks so happy in that moment. Knowing what happens a few minutes later makes that part really hard to stomach.
I remember when this movie came out and I was told by word of mouth by friends to go see it and I did. I knew nothing about it accept that it was a movie I had to see. By the time this scene came around I was completely engross by the story and was literally on the edge of my seat. When it was over it stayed with me for days. Especially knowing that it was a true story. To me that is what a movie experience is all about. Ive been a fan of Mr Jackson and Kate and Melanie ever since. Incredible.
I can't believe that this is based on a true story, did they ever admit to why they committed such a crime, was any other reason given or known apart from the wanting to be together?
They weren't allowed to defend themselves in court, so the story was somewhat sensationalized, but Anne Perry (Juliet) said they got it completely right. It's based on Pauline's diaries at the time, a lot of the narration is verbatim.
@90sShowJames I was creeped out when I looked up this case on line and realized that I'd MET Juliet (Anne Perry) a few years ago in Idaho at a book signing she did. There was a chilling air about her, but when I talked to her, (granted, not knowing who she was at all) she was quite charming and pleasant. It just creeped me out when I was re reading the book she signed and realized who she was...
@cherrylipschick She just seemed detached, cold and distant one instant and then bright, bubbly and totally charming the next. When I talked to her and got my book signed, she was very pleasant and nice to talk to. She's also a very talented writer, as many people know.
@RaindropsFantasia This is a true story happend in New Zealand. The two girls killed Honora because Juliette Hulme and her father were leaving shortly for South Africa and, though Pauline Parker wanted to accompany them, her mother forbade it. That's why Pauline killed her Mother with Juliette (know called Ann Perry). If you want more informations go to Parker-Hulme murder wiki.
@RaindropsFantasia You can't believe this was based on a true story? The two girls were convicted and imprisoned, one of them, Juliet Hulme, later became a distinguished crime writer under the name Anne Perry and has made several interviews about the murder.
As to their motive, some people believe they suffered from a form of folie a deux, a mental illness. But can you ever truly know the motive to any crime? They were 15 years old, who knows what was going on inside their heads.

@TheCryptic00, I'm happy to hear someone say that. This sick obsession and support of that murderer is disgusting.

I always have to mute the end. The sound of the mother dying just ...I can't listen. Such an amazing movie.

What I find most creepy about this scene is the way the two girls are pretending to be so nice to her. It's sickening.
