I liked Airplane as a kid. Then I heard Embryonic Journey on Surrealistic Pillow, and I knew that Jorma was so much more than what he was with the Airplane. Then I saw Tuna do a free concert at American University during the Rampage. Life has not been the same since.
I just wanted all Hot Tuna fans to know that Hot Tuna will soon be visiting Long Island, on the waterfront at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
They are performing July 15th 2011 along with over 35 other performers that weekend. There will be plenty of other rock, jam, folk, blues & “Americana” genres as well. Definitely check it out, there’s more information on the Great South Bay Music Festival website!!!
In 1976 I saw Hot Tuna warm up for Santana at the Aragon Theater in Chicago. My first concert. I was a senior in high school. I had never heard of Hot Tuna. They played so fantastic I couldn't believe my ears. I had been playing guitar for a couple of years very seriously, and I was BLOWN OUT OF MY SOCKS by Kaukonen's playing. At that concert they played only electric guitars.
The audience response to Hot Tuna was EXPLOSIVE! and I thought "Oh no, how can Santana ever follow this?"
Strange...Whenever I hear "Embryonic Journey", I think of my mother! LOL
She passed away last week after years of fighting cancer. She was a GREAT mother, and a wonderful person. Years ago, when I was working around the house, crankin' a tape of Jorma from My Father's Place on L.I., Mom asked "Who are you listening to? I really like it!" Being a classically trained violinist, she knew fine music. I made her copies of Jorma/Tuna tapes which she listened to until she left us.
@TallBrianFromNapa: Thanks for sharing. Here's to all fantastic moms who raised hippies from the 60s and 70s. My mom raised five of us with incredible love and acceptance for who we each are. Fortunately, my mom and dad are still healthy and I see them all the time and I never ever take it for granted. I'll share a quick Hot Tuna story next...
@TallBrianFromNapa - My Fathers Place in Roslyn. That sure brings back memories. Back in the seventies, my friend Joe Beets ran sound there. A great little club with awesome acts.
Funny you should mention Bert Jansch, as he is the real author of Black Mountain Side, not Jimmy Page. Although I really do like Jimmy's version of it on the 1st Led Zepplin lp as well.
i just shit my pants and came at the same time. that's never happened before. wow

This piece will pass on from one generation to the next for centuries to come, as long as there are stringed instruments.

Santana came out and lit the place on fire like nothing I've ever seen since, and I've been to a bunch of concerts through the years.
I was extremely blessed to have seen two of the greatest bands in rock history on one night and at my first concert. Unbelievable!

bass is actually a guitar though...not to be picky or anything. Jorma plays like no other. Pure unadulterated beauty.

I get to see these guys Aug. 3 in Tampa. Psyched.
They're one of the original Jam Bands.

True. I also like 'Black Mountain Side' by Jimmy Page. A couple of Bert Jansch pieces stand out too.

They turned it down a little, by doing two guitars instead of one.
