My favorite is 1:08 to 2:10. I like 2:08 - 2:10, especially, but I didn't like the beginning from 0:00 until 1:07. 3:10 - 3:40 was not my favorite either. HORRIBLE MICROPHONE AT THE END lol. whatever it was that made that atrocious sound
for he people who pay so MUCH about an artist's appearances and facial expressions, I guess they are NOT really musically and artistically devoted....
I love the way her strong will is evidenced on her face as she plays, that "iron" that helped her to become the violinist that she is and to play with such fire.
is classic music about sex too? wth every female violinist, soloist piano, flute, etc. they usually bare skin or makeup heavy . Guys don't have to do that, its just all skill, and maybe eyeliner?
Interesting point. But I think it's only natural that we feel for more beautiful look. Only, nowadays, whole concept of marketing is making commercial use of it. And you're wrong that guys are free from this burden; there'a whole line of young stars whoes cute faces are part of the source of their popularity. Even decades ago, young Glen Gould won his publicity with his first record of Goldberg partially because of the jacket photo showing this young man's faces.
I do not know why, but she's been performing with this shortened cadenza up untill late 80's, including her first record of this concerto in 79. But in her later performance (with Tennstedt in other video, for example), she uses full cadenza, and does it superbly.
I think she is one of the least concerned about her appearance--note YEARS later she is wearing this SAME dress though it doesn't fit quite as well and somewhat less in synch with style--she doesn't seem at all concerned--it just seems to be something to cover her body. She wears little make up in comparison with others--lipstick and at times some eye liner, which most of us do for just going to the grocery store. I think she is pretty conservative. Have you noticed some of the comments(con)
that women must endure--like "she's fat"..for normal sized female violinist...yet do you ever see such comments for Oistrakh? If a really large sized female VIRTUOSO played I only wonder at what comments would be made regarding her size and appearance--there still remans a huge gender bias.
@shanny64 She is just dressed up for the occasion. In any formal occasion, the guys dress in suits and the ladies - well - like Ms. Chung is here. She is presented very nicely, is she not? As for her playing - wow! She and Ms. Mutter are both great artists. The ladies seem to be as good as the men these days.
Absolutely beautiful! Her expressions while playing revealed the passion that she has for playing her music. It's amazing to watch someone play who's that passionate. I'll try to incorporate that into my own violin playing.
Just keep in mind that sometimes, playing with too much facial expression in the wrong circumstances looks funny. Remember, when people are performing, people expect professionalism. But when you solo, hey! Might as well express yourself.
I am glad you enjoyed Oistrakh--it is an excellent rendition and I am sure you know where to go and find it...I watched itand was not rude enough to post about other violinist there but left a nice thank you
She has a funny stance in the beginning. (And its funny as in laugh at it XD might be because of the dress ahaha)
I love this peformance, it looks like alot of fun! What violin is that? Also I'd like to know how long it takes for it to start sounding nice when you play soo close to the bridge....Anyways perfect control of the bow!!!! Bravo.
Funny how critical people can be. Don't criticize unless you can post a video response of how you think it should sound.(since you, the criticizers, obviously have a better taste in music than a true master of the violin.) She's absolutely perfect.
HA HA... Beethoven, Chung & Chung, and all you can say is just 'ugly'. I can't really think of what to say about your comment, but I just wanted to laugh. HA HA HA
SONNABEND this is what keeps people away from classical music. Don't judge. You classical connoisseurs have developed such an ear for perfect pitch and quality of sound. So what if the notes are slightly off or the sound. This music is divine. Please, sir, listen to Captain Beefheart. It is music that is purposely out of tune and intended to be so and is not improvised I might add. One may find joy in crackly old records and warped twenty year old cassettes. Not everything needs to be flawless.
Is this the same performance as on her CD recording of the Beethoven? I don't remember...
Anyway, the phrasing seems really jagged and broken up. She's one of my favorite violinists (amazing really!), but I don't particularly care of this performance. I prefer the Mutter performance of this here on youtube.
No, the live performance that released as CD from EMI was given in 1989 with Tennstedt. This concert here took place in Korea as her 'return' performance after the birth of her second son.
The Beethoven with Tennstedt was released on VHS and LD format from EMI (the same performance was released as CD also, coupled with Bruch). But it never appeared as DVD yet. Used VHS or LD is still sometimes available.
its my favorite recording of both bruch and beethoven concertos and i have gobs of recordings of the same works by other artists i dont like as much, thats why im so eager to see it
maybe you could put it up for us one day? we are at your mercy! lol
hey i once saw a lazer disk for sale on ebay of chung with tennstedt playing the beethoven, i only saw it once and it was a long time ago, does anyone know about this?
I saved a pic of it, do a search in yahoo groups for kyung wha chung and goto the photo section.

She comes from the older generation who didn't play full candenzas -- you only had to get through the progression...
