This movie is one of those few. One of the very few that deserve it's praise,a real movie that'll make you shed some real tears if you have the heart, and many emotions more too. All in all,and i know it's been said before. But this movie, will be one of the best movies you have the choice of sitting down and experiencing.
I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still to hold a thought in my head. I think it's the sort of excitement a free man (Freeman) feels on the start of a long journey, whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope to make it across the border safely. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.
This movie was robbed of Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Tim Robbins should have been nominated at least for either Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor. Just an amazing movie and score on all levels!
This movie had to compete with Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Stargate during its opening release. I don't know about you guys, but that's a big fence to climb.
Dear Red, If you're reading this, you've gotten out. And if you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further. You remember the name of the town, don't you? I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels. I'll keep an eye out for you and the chessboard ready. Remember, Red. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well. Your friend, Andy.
@claudiabolivarleon It grossed $28,341,469 and it's the number one of the 250 top movies of all time on IMDB (Internet Movie Database). I really don't see how that's not amazing.
@BBFalconShot dude sees when quantity become better then quality this movie is at the top of imdb because it voted my criticizes and people vote combined together for very good reason
We, as a nation of good-hearted people, accept with confidence, to pay the price required to hold criminals in jail indefinitely, when necessary, rather than take the risk of ending the lives of innocent people. In due time, those innocent will, hopefully, be granted the freedom they deserved, while the guilty shall be held as a reminder of our own collective responsibility in shaping a better future for the generations to come.
Hauntingly Beautiful!!!! Andy Dufrain.....came out clean on the other side!!! What an outstanding movie!!!!! Touches the heart and teaches you that anything in life is possible!!!!
I finally saw this film for the first time a few weeks ago. My university has a cult classics series going on right now and Shawshank was included in the line-up for this year. I was just beaming at the end. It's one of those movies that makes you really believe in life. And what a fantastic score.
Does anyone else think of Brokeback Mountain before Shawshank when they hear this music? Because it was used in the trailer? I can literally hear Heath Ledger saying "if you can't fix it, you gotta stand it!' strange...
But yeah, Shawshank if by far the best movie ever :)
@Ameliaaa1993 This theme has been used in a ton of movies I believe...Ghosts of Mississippi, The Hurricane, All the Kings Men, Finding Forrester...Anyu others that I'm missing? It's great trailer music.
I heard this song in another video and I had to find it immediately after that. I've been meaning to watch The Shawshank Redemption for years now and this song has given me the final push to go and actually do it.
Frank Darabont is pretty sick; this movie in particular had the music and acting talent to go along with the direction and script. People always use this as a reference to the old TBS--"yeah, they're showing 'Shawshank' and 'Rush Hour' again." Damn, go back to the old TBS lineup then, in my opinion. Beats the hell out of 6 hours of Raymond/Meet the Browns
I remember my very good friend of mine. Some scenes were closely related. And now hes somewhere out in one of the best islands in the carebean... I guess i just miss my friend...
the thing with Shawshank redemption was that the film had a low budget and at first was not very popular with the viewers but in time it became a classic so its the kinda movie that grows on you and my favourite quote from any movie is "get busy dying, or get busy living. that's god damn right." ^.^
@Fireleigh Yeah, unfortunately he still hasn't won an academy award for anything. He needs to though, dunno if it matters to him at this point though.
I'm doing Shawshank Redemption for one of my classes at college - it's a media course. It's really interesting learning about symbolism of the film and the different camera angles etc used in it.. I love the film as well... ending is so happy, but brings a tear to the eye!!
This end title track for Shawshank was so good, it was used it in the original trailers for 'Brokeback Mountain' . When I saw the BBM trailer I knew I had heard the music before and couldn't place it at first.
Heh, I still remember I watched this all the time, at the end credits I rewinded it to the begining of the credits to hear this song over and over again..
Why can't movies today be more like this and the green mile? Absolutly mind-blowing. Ive watched this movie so many times, in fact, im going to watch it now! =D
I don't mean to be politacly correct but,Im white and grew up an allmost black high school and i say all KKk groups and white supremecy groups are a Discrace to our society and should be in jail for life.just my comments.........Morgan freeman is a Brilliant man.
Because like the music of today, no one has anymore originality. They take music and movies of yesterday and re-do them, it's about the money, not the creativity.
Its a shame and I totally hear you bro........totally.
@mrceebees14 Yeah your right.. Speaking of re-do's.. Could you ever imagine a remake of the Shawshank redemption?? Agh, that'd suck big time.. Most likely they wouldn't use the same cast and a LOT would be changed..
I'd like to echo the sentiments of the other comments. A great movie.
Is it just me or, on the first promotional poster shown (repeated in the video), is there a small boy in a white singlet holding the back of Robbins'/Andy's shirt?
Caption: "Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free" (very true). Is the boy (if it is a boy) supposed to represent fear? Maybe Andy represents hope?
Am I dreaming? If not, who is the boy? If I am dreaming, what then is that white image?
It could've been a boy from what you see in this video, but I have the poster on my wall, and I think it's just Andy's coat. If you google "shawshank poster" you'll be able to see it closer. But it's an very interesting thought :-)
The music score is tremendous,as is the movie. The "End Title" sequence (So was red and End title) evokes some of the deepest human emotions -- we hear counterpoint in conflict with counterpoint, with one winning out and the other moving onward, upward and beyond, and we care carried to the end, as Morgan Freeman put it, "... the end of a long journey." - marc in st. petersburg, florida, usa.
what kind of a stupid question is that? what women did he stab???? have you even seen this movie before? he got 25+ years for a crime he didnt commit. his wife was having an affair and a scumbag robbed his house while his wife was in bed with another man and the scumbag shot them both and the cops pinned the murder on andy. what the hell are you talking about b0grillaz?
Well, what I meant was, it's only number 1 since Godfather was downvoted by Dark Knight fans. Hence, Shawshank slipped up. That's an objective view on it. I prefer Godfather myself, but I couldn't care less.
true awards are anyways reserved for fans' judgment. this movie has become not just a cult classic, a huge fan-favorite. Not having gotten any Oscars just cheapens the Oscar, not the movie. Remember, Gandhi himself never won the Nobel Peace Prize! Yet Arafat did...imagine that! This is my most favorite movie, award or no award.
@fatcammy thank you. sorry, i'm a bit late on replying! :) looking back, a few months after watching the movie for the first time, god, it's still stuck with me. it is that good!
I have seen both endings. I like the shorter version. The longer version tried to answered too many questions about what happened. I think it took away from the beautiful ending
It makes my heart ache every time I hear it, not in the bad way though. It's more of the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain.
The same guy who did this score (Tom Newman) made arguably the greatest soundtrack of all time in the Road To Perdition. Just listen to "Road to Perdition," "Road to Chicago," "A blind eye," "Lexington Hotel Room 1432" and "Rock Island 1931." Especially the first two which are the most emotionally touching scores I've ever heard. They're all on youtube
Breathtaking soundtrack to a fantastic movie, the best I've ever seen. Andy Dufresne, just his name makes me warm inside.. truly something extraordinary
this is a beautiful soundtrack. it brings back all those great feelings from shawshank redemption... no doubt the best movie i've ever seen. absolutely beautiful
This movie is one of those few. One of the very few that deserve it's praise,a real movie that'll make you shed some real tears if you have the heart, and many emotions more too. All in all,and i know it's been said before. But this movie, will be one of the best movies you have the choice of sitting down and experiencing.

Remember, Gandhi himself never won the Nobel Peace Prize! Yet Arafat did...imagine that! This is my most favorite movie, award or no award.

Rank this right up there with Cinema Paradiso, both beautiful movies, both great soundtracks, and both great endings!
kleinmattahorn 3 years ago 2
which ending of Il Cinema Paradiso? the american version or the italian version......?
(the endings are actually the same, but the events leading up to the ending give it a different feeling)

I have seen both endings. I like the shorter version. The longer version tried to answered too many questions about what happened. I think it took away from the beautiful ending

absolutely beautiful.
breathtaking.
my god, breathtaking.
amazing film, wonderful score.

Question, does anyone knows the name of the song which is played when Tommy arrives in jailbus at the shawshank prison?
Thanks
nebu147 3 years ago
That's a good question. It was omitted from the soundtrack for some reason.
