I like the fact that you do "unknown" and unappreciated pieces. I would love to know if there is a piano arrangement of a slow piece by Malcolm Arnold from his Little Suite for Brass 2nd movt
@pinkharrier47 Thanks. I don't know about the Arnold. However, I do often play an arrangement for violin and piano of one of the four Scottish Dances which is on a current exam syllabus!
Much as I love and enjoy Sullivan coupled with Gilbert, the operettas overshadow his other "solo" works such as this. I have yet to find a composition of his that is not enjoyable, especially when as here it is so well performed. If the measure of greatness is the pleasure that is given then Sullivan has some part of that!
@pjdonagh Thank you for your comment, with which I agree! Somewhere I have a piano transcription of 'The Lost Chord' which I must look out and play here!
@PSearPianist I will look forward to that. It is now more than half a century since I first (and last) sang the Lost Chord along with The long Day Closes in a church choir concert......memories!!!
His operatic influence is clearly heard in this beautiful piece. I suspect this melody will be 'buzzing' in my head at least all day long, and maybe even more - which you're to be blamed, of-course... ;)

Great choice and a wonderful introduction to the "other side" of Sullivan.

Why is so much of Arthur Sullivan's non-operetta music ignored? I never heard this before and there is much more I never heard.

@verdew8181 That's a very pertinent question!

Absolutely beautiful. A treasure from Sullivan,
Sensitive, lyrical playing, from the heart. Thank you for bringing this work into the light of day.

Wish I had this on CD. Excellent performance of a hauntingly gorgeous Sullivan composition.

Thanks for your kind comment. It is certainly available on CD, because I think I listened to a commercial recording while preparing this video.

Splendid! Have you ever considered tackling Sullivan's Allegro Risoluto?
crzxr 2 years ago
Thank you! I may have a look at the 'Allegro Risoluto' and see if it is suitable for recording here.

Well played and now I know what speed to play it at, I too know it as a grade 7 piece too.
DaveAtherton 2 years ago
Thank you. Of course, I offer no guarantees that my speed would please an examiner at Grade 7!

What type of piano do you have? I really enjoyed it. That piece is umbelievably beautiful. I'm going to try and get the music!

It is a Kawai KG2D 5' 10" grand. I have sent you a link from which you should be able to download the music (which is out of copyright).

It has a very nice sound. I have a Yamaha.

It was written 20 years before movies were invented, and as far as I know the piece has not been used in one - but I may be wrong!

Thanks - it is a beautiful melody and reminiscent of some of the tunes in the operettas.
