I've got this vinyl record and it's unique because you have to play the side with this song on it at 45 rpm speed.I have never run across another album like that before.
An yone remember the earthquake bass bins they used , 2 * 1000watt 18" cerwin vega drivers in the boxes with the barn doors, we all walked out of that gig after with stomach aches, the kick drum just moved your body, you just had to dance
@ThePeeterd I know it sucks balls. This was the first album I bought with my own money at tender age of 11 (now 25) and never once looked back. It also annoys me when "True Reggae" fans look down their nose at when I say I'm UB40 fan.
@ReeferMadnessity I would like to think I know a wee bit about Reggae,My intro to it was via this album.I think it is one of the best albums ever made.I am always puzzled by the so called "True Reggae" fans look on UB40.If you look at most Reggae sites recall of the history of the music UB40 are rarely mentioned, despite the fact that they are the most successfule Reggae bands of all time. UB40 opened up the delights of Raggae to millions Of white workingclass in the UK,with 2tone united B&W
When The Bitch finally dies are you gonna party? What's her legacy..what' d she say when she came in May 79?'In the words of Saint Francis of Assisi ; where there is hope let me bring despair, where there are manufacturing jobs let me bring dole, where there is community let me bring the selfish law of the jungle'
It's been nearly twenty years now since Thatcher's own party threw her out, and, looking at the senile old witch now, it's hard to remember how HATED the bastard was at the time. Queue up to dance on her grave!
I heard this the first time, 1987, San Jose State University radio station........threw a cassette in the recorder (Dolby B & C!).......still have 3/4 of this today.
this band was unemployed. Each member said lets learn an instrument, and in 6 months we'll make a band...and here they are. ub40 is an unemployment form in Britain
hey looking for that song that said "i m a british subject no proud of it while i carry this burden of shame" anyone could recall me the title it s in the album that represent a p45 card for unemployed
It`s called burden of shame. From the first album ``signing off`So named because they met in the unemployment office and signed off the dole after they made their album. By the way, it is by FAR the greatest reggae album I have ever heard (no disrespect to B. Marley)
This song is so great! I agree, Signing off is defenitely their best album. Their other albums are mainly commercial, but also do contain some great songs.
Makes you proud to be a brummie.........loved this and the whole signing off ethic.........summed up the times and social polcy of early 80,s britain..
@SPORTINGMUSE and we all know who the song was aimed at!!!! there should be a new version called mister medusa for this generation if you know what i mean!!!!
@spacecatf14xx the thing is maggi was what put the grate into Britain.she was good at rubbing you up the wrong way or the right way if your drunken Dennis. anyway shes what made it possibly to be 1 in 10. oh the good old days of a lack of employment (or last week) its nice to know labour was just as shite as the conservatives. there meant to be having a remembrance day when she Dies, its guna be party time round mine and scargills.
Funny to hear people defend Maggie as British society continues its decent into the toilet. Try living in mainland Europe and you see the difference, even the 'chavs' say hello in the street here.
The best they ever did- from the moment i listened to this album i was hooked.i think it was recorded near me as well--graduate records in Dudley west midlands.
I think they got a bit too poppy and comercial after--
Signing off was their first album i bought and nothing after bettered it! Unfortunately i lent it to someone and never got it back, it will have to be re-bought if i',m coming on youtube to listen to it!!!
Music has moved on man, and they have moved with it. They would never had lasted so long sounding like their first album, "Signing Off".....although that album is and will always be one of their best! DrT
I have always been a big fan of UB40, but I feel they have just been going through the motions in recent years, in fact I always thought they 'sold-out' when they made Labour of Love. For me, nothing they've done compares to Signing Off & Present Arms. And now that Ali has left the band, they are finished IMO cause Ali is the voice of UB40. Having said that, my money is on a reconciliation!
Metaphor? Indeed it is. superb song writing

why oh why is it that all this groups like ub had to go the commercial path.
i remember the early 70ties when they were social engaged.
did it pay not enough to be socialy interested?or just a sign of the times ahead?
i still like to believe they were singing about margeret who disrupted the country for about 10years.
anyway, thanks guy,s for the nice music in the early 80t.
i still have the original lp.
