Hey shitcase, some trivia. The effects for the darkness were made from mirrored shots of nude women dancing, so if you look closely at the crappy monster, youll see nude women. It said it on imdb
For some reason I like this film. I know it's bad, but it's entertaining. The ending was fucking WEAK though, that CGI 'darkness' just looked inexcusably wank to the point of nearly ruining everything. I'm more scared of the singer from that band 'The Darkness', to be honest, all that whoo-ing and crotch-grabbing he'd do. His teeth are fucking terrifying too.
In the review, it's mentioned a number of times that Price didn't make out the checks to each individual guest . If you make the check out to cash anyone can take the check and cash it.
This was an unusual role for Chris Kattan but he pulled it off just fine. I like the Eurhythmics' original 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)' better than Manson's cover. Manson tends to slow down the tempo way too much.
When I first saw this movie, I re-watched immediatley after the ending; I have a strange love for this film, I even like it a lot more than the original 1, and that's a rare for me. I especially loved the Marilyn Manson song in it too. In fact, I'm going to watch it now :)
Haha, that part got me because it was even less expected than when it happened in the movie.
House on Haunted Hill is the perfect B-movie. Knowingly performed overacting, some humor, and even though it's mostly laughable there are some genuinely scary parts (even if they mostly rely on jump scares).
I saw this in a theater when it first came out in '99 (woulda been 19 at the time so I didn't have to sneak into the theater). Thought it was awesome. Actually better than the original since there were actually ghosts and hideous twisted things and stuff...and contorted faces and giant mouths growing out of hallways that freaked the piss out of me. Love that shit. XD Jeffrey Combs was awesome as always. My college buddies and I used to try to impersonate his jerky ghostwalk.
@ 3:46 "awererea it's pretty scary." I've always wondered about this film. Thanks to your review, I think i'll pass. As Clarence Boddicker once said, "I don't got time for this bullshit!"
I remember first seeing this and I have to say that this is one of the few remakes that I thought was alright. Its just too bad (as you state in the review) that they decided to pull a bad move with using a shitty cgi "grand finale". The original is pretty alright as well. Good review mate!
yeah, this is the first movie i ever saw that genuinely scared me. the part you mentioned about the doc jerking freaked me out the most. oh btw, if you could, review Starship Toopers. i think you would really have a good time critiqueing it. lol.
@fazinazin33 Funnily enough I dug Starship Troopers out on video just two days ago for a watch after many years, I enjoyed it but I know what you mean about having a good time pulling it apart. I'll see about doing it some time. Cheers.
@anton1990 He lo0ks different somehow. He doesn't have his usual Herbert West/Milton Dammers vibe. But then, he IS a character actor (one of the best ever), so he doesn't have to have the same vibe all the time.
OK it wasn't masterpiece but still decent Horror/Thriller. I guess Famke Janssen was the main trophy here. She was stunning.
Ali Larter, Geoffrey Rush, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Cattan, Bridget Wilson did a great job too. I really love Bridget. Too bad she was killed the first. Her character was interesting and deserved more screen time
Agreed, my good man. Uwe Bowl is a jackass. I mean, don't give me any of the "making zombie movies more interesting for the 21st century" crap. Not you poinoup, the Uwe Bowl guy.
Jeffery Combs twitchy Doctor's walk is far creeper than any off the bargain basement CGI this movie throws at you. Also, I'm not surprised those two were the only ones to survive. Afterall the adopted guy could rely on his training from Equilibrium and Sonya was raised by the Commando himself in Last Action hero. Of course it won't help them cash those unsigned cheques though.
It wasnt such a bad film in the end. I found it watchable. I cannot believe it came out 10 years ago! I remember when it cameout at the cinema! Great review shitcase.
I always thought the video camera part was one of the better parts, after that it went downhill, but the part where the thing runs up to her and she screams..:> Man classic spookiness.
another brilliant review. Geoffrey Rush looks like he's really gone for the Vincent Price impression, although no one could ever pull that off. "I was adopted!" great line, legendary. 10/10 once again (see what i did there)
Another masterly review, I think this an ok movie - I really like the owner guy, saying "Oh you thought that was bad wait till (I cant remember) you love that" his warnings are eerie and funny! You should definately do "Legend of Hell House"
I like the classic version better.

You're not familiar with Chris Kattan?
Well, then again, he's not really that well known IN the US, let alone outside it...

@IggyHazard lol, Kattan was horrible in this joke of a film.

@pretorious700 It wasn't his best role, sure, but he seemed skittish and neurotic which fits the character.

a well done review :-)
you had very good points towards the film.
it is a remake but its one of the better ones.
it has some parts that creep me the fuck out, like where price gets put in the machince that makes him go insane.
or the werid ass doctor like you said.
it had is ehhh moments but a satafilying movie to watch in the dark with a few friends and some popcorn.
