This is an inspired rendition, proving itself absolutely timeless and spanning cultures, religions, philosophies, ages, races...... 2012 and it still moves us. Supernatural.
Thank you soooo much for uploading this here!ILove all kinds of music from A to Z..Classic too..But THIS will ALWAYS be special to me... because when I was VERY young girl my mama(she was an opera/operette singer herself)Told me Deanna Durbin was one of her fave singers. She(my mama) passed away 3 years ago in a bad way.But Still,I'm so proud,WE,my whole family can sing...perhaps because of her...but HER fave stars too...My mom LOVED Deanna.!!Thank you,Merci bien,Danke,Graçias,Dank je wel!!
This is a song to the Mother Goddess. The überpartriachal Jews -- Saul of Tarsus -- didn't formulate it this way. But later, perhaps by Roman influence, the Mother Goddess was snuck back in, with the introduction of the Mary figures -- three versions, the Virgin, the Sinner and the Mother -- into the fable.
why does this song always make me cry?....I'm a 34 year old man for crying out loud!.....there's only a few songs that affect me like this, another is Beethoven's "moonlight sonata" played by Wilhelm Kempff, you know the kind of song that makes you get tingles under your skin.
@sidious1977 the song touches the true meaning of the soul and the grace of our lady to whome god as given the love of our lord jesus to heal our pain and take away our sins
@mariafistful According to Wikipedia, Deanna Durbin sang Ava Maria in "It's a Date," and in "Mad About Music." Exactly which film this particular clip is from, I don't know.
The movie this if from is called "It's a Date" from 1940. I guess it was a 'B' movie, maybe even a comedy according to comments well below? No matter, the song and its beauty can withstand the flack all around it.
You must have the FAITH in Jesus the Savior of MANKIND. Open your HEART and the Lord Jesus will fill you with SALVATION and PEACE!! TRY it once and see where TRUE HAPPINESS EXISTS!!
@TheMightyPatapon i AGREE WITH YOU. I think atheism exists primarliy because dogma is just too forceful... I think music - and this song in particular.. allows something within to move, something intangible and if that i sthe soul, or whatever you call it, then it must be connected to something lovingly greater, greater not in authority, but in loving esssence and equality.
@TheMightyPatapon Claiming to be ''Honest'' and an ''Atheist'' at the same time, just don't seem to sit comfortably together. Usually I've found, that people who claim to be an atheist, do so, as an excuse to continue their sinful lives against others, themselves, or nature and thus try avoiding any sense of reponsibility and morality. I'm not saying you are such a person, though a phrase does spring to mind, i.e ''As you sow, so shall you reap''.... I agree, that it's a lovely song though :)
@TheMightyPatapon I agree somewhat with your comment, but would suggest that religious music, art, and architecture, inspired BY faith, are testimonies TO faith, often embodying it. One can enjoy this hymn as a "relaxing song", but it is more than that. It's a prayer, and as such, transcends any enjoyable aspects, giving it an entirely different dimension. A theatrical or museum setting for religious music and art can be enjoyable, but the experience is often out of context.
io ho 34 anni la tv mi disgusta a vedere che porcherie e che scemenze fanno oggi...ma voi di un tempo avevate dei film che erano vere e proprie OPERE D'ARTE!!
To all non catholic, this song is a very beautiful song; it's also tells us how beautiful this woman is. She is the mother of jesus, have u ever ask yrself this question; why her? why she only follow roman catholics? that's a good question, also their is a really good reason 4 it. God chose her before even she was born, she follow catholics, cause she only want to follow her son's only 1 true church, pple are too blind to see that.
@tonganfoilole69 not catholics but ALL CHRISTIANS!!!! Saint Mary follows all christians, and me,and i am orthodox!!!!...this is beautful version of ave maria....yes God chose her,and she born Jesus and is Protector of all christians, not only catholics, you think wrong man...
@angelpacheco59 Come back to Tradition. There is the latin Mass, with Gregorian Chant and the true Catholic doctrine. You try a Fraternity of Saint Peter or a SSPX parish , if you cannot find the Traditional Mass elsewhere.
Gosh, it just makes me want to cry.. It is so beautiful a version! I never what the words were saying... It's Holy Mary... wow.... Thanks for such a wonderful vid, VT.... You have educated this wayward Catholic, who is sure she wants to go to Mass this coming weekend, and Thank the Lord for all the blessing he has given me...
I'm not a Catholic, but since seeing "Fantasia" as a child, this has always been one of my favorite pieces of music. Talent is a gift from God. You respond to the 'spark' of God in the composer, musician, singer, whatever the artist is. It speaks to the God
Lookinland, you are trash!! Not Hollywood. Hollywood did a good thing back then. Perhaps you like the new Hollywood with sex and violence. These were the golden years when life and religion meant something. Not today when Hollywood and YOU are trash.
Oh no, they are right about one thing. Look at the abbreviation they started their post with... OMG. "Oh, my God." Lookinland cries out to God without knowing it. :)
Take a breath sister. Remember, Christ loves him/her too. Children don't always listen to their parents, but we're all the children of God. :)

Ah,yes, a beautiful rendition of a great song sung by Deana Durbin. It was back when Hollywood had respect for the Catholic Church and Christianity in general. Those days are long gone. Deana Durbin is still around though.
I noticed the post above about Catholic's and Protestant's bashing each other. Hard to understand in this day when Christians should come together and be as Christ wanted us to be. At least try to forget who we once were and remember who we are supposed to be. War is on the horizen, and what's going today seems to escape these people.
Andres Perello de Segurola coach all career of Deanna and her movies he went back to Conservatorio de Barcelona giving lessons to my grand aunthie and Nadine Conner- Deanna came to Barcelona during Wagner Festival of Bayreuth in Liceu 1953 she said to my aunthie in 1960 cirka that Victoria delos Angeles was magnificent ideal voice
This serene and celestial musical piece is so beautiful and a fitting tribute of human ingenuity to the Mother of God, the blessed Virgin Mary. He who loves Jesus must likewise love the one he loves, no less than her mother Mary, who actually is the first Christian disciple by submitting herself to the will of God. Here in the Philippines the great devotion to Mary is so prevalent among Catholics. We feel blessed to be he only predominantly Catholic/Christian nation in Asia.
@freddietonton Some Christians forget the huge importance of the Virgin Mary: by submitting to the willd of God, she accepted the most important task ever, to be the mother of God's Son. She knew she'd face a great challenge, but she was humble and loved God above anyone else, even herself. Before Jesus was born, she already became the first Christian. No wonder she's full of grace and the Lord is with her: she was fulfilled with God's graces because her heart was entirely open to his will.
(Ellen's Third Song -- concluded) Ave Maria! stainless styled. Foul demons of the earth and air, From this their wonted haunt exiled, Shall flee before thy presence fair. We bow us to our lot of care, Beneath thy guidance reconciled; Hear for a maid a maiden's prayer, And for a father hear a child! Ave Maria.
(Ellen's Third Song -- continued) Ave Maria! undefiled! The flinty couch we now must share Shall seem this down of eider piled, If thy protection hover there. The murky cavern's heavy air Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled; Then, Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer, Mother, list a suppliant child! Ave Maria!
Scott's words are, I think, more affecting than the Latin hymn, especially "Though banish'd, outcast and reviled - Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer": Hymn to the Virgin by Sir Walter Scott Ave Maria! maiden mild! Listen to a maiden's prayer! Thou canst hear though from the wild; Thou canst save amid despair. Safe may we sleep beneath thy care, Though banish'd, outcast and reviled - Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer; Mother, hear a suppliant child! Ave Maria
Some music come into our lives and quickly go. Some STAY FOREVER and leave footprints on our heart. And we are never ever the same, those are JUST A STAR LIKE DEANNA DURBIN !!! !!! !!!
I love her angelic voice.I can listen to her all day.I have seen some of her old movies.A big plus:she has a angelic face too, beautiful lady.I'm sure she's making everybody up there so happy.
i love when she glances up at her mom and the mom smiles at her but she keeps right on singing, not sure if her beauty or the song is more beautiful its what we say in horse racing business A DEAD HEAT only those who are familiar with the ponies will understand what i am saying...
She sings like a beautiful part nightingale part angel. What a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria and coming from the mouth of a beautiful woman. I enjoyed her voice truly.
To me, no denomination is needed when hearing such a beautiful rendition of this song. Deanna Durbin is perfection. God gave her the voice of an Angel.
but of course if we can't see what we posted, it's hard to tell if we made a mistake in pasting the different parts.

Violinthief, don't heed Protestants and Catholics bashing each other. They don't mar our pleasure of listening to Ave Maria.

I prefer Vitas singing "Ave Maria" (Ellens dritten Gesang) than either Deanna Durbin or Sarah Brightman.

To me, no denomination is needed when hearing such a beautiful rendition of this song. Deanna Durbin is perfection. God gave her the voice of an Angel.
