Hi to all. I am speaking not as a Xingjiang Islamic descedant, but as a Chinese. I am not here to convince people in Tibet, you are Chinese despite what the government think, but most of you are uneducated of the facts. Tibetan and Chinese relationship go back a long time. We ruled Tibet often to secure trade and border issues and Tibetans did the same peaking once in 700AD. However, when China was weak, Tibet was very vulnerable to becoming a colony of foreign powers and it was China who helped
You have gone to great lengths to help Tibetan people, you have brought the Tibet issue to light for many Americans.
But, WHAT was the purpose of this add? of pretending to drive to Tibet? and falsely portraying His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the reflection of the car? Where did the proceeds from this endorsement go?
To someone who works tirelessly for Tibet this looks like just another case of exploiting the Tibetan people.
I don't think we even have the right to criticise him on this ad. Unless we match what he's done for Tibet.
The money from this ad is peanut for him. He did it just to remind people to always remember Tibet, in any way including people who casually know about Tibet. This is a way to reach these peple.
Again, unless we've done something that match his commitment, his devotion, I'd suggest we just follow his action.
How nice its to be white in America, you can go out and be a crybaby about human rights everywhere else but dont look in to your own backyard, Hey Richie! you seem to have lots of time to waste, can u look in to the Mexican -American war? there seems to have been a misplacement of over a million square miles and perhaps we can fight for human rights and return to original owners?! ;)~looser!
Richard Gere has nowhere near China Tibet region, either enter India. Whole Ad is misleading, incites the hate between Chinese people and exile tibetans.
what right do americans and brits have to go to chinese soil and protest against human rights after all they've done to iraqis, to the black people, to vietnam? FREE IRAQ! FREE IRAQ! YANKEES GO HOME YOU'RE LOSERS! RICHARD GERE THE NEW HOLLYWOOD BODHISATTVA
One day, I hope that there will be a woman in power in China that represents compassion and human rights. Where Tibetans can live in freedom to live as they want to. Where Chinese can express their own opinions. That there will be kindness and compassion and respect for all sentient beings.

The PRC should send all Chinese (indifferently high officials) into Tibet and not allow Chinese food, language, & medicine for 3 years. This SPARTAN way can eliminated two-third physical unfit population in the PRC at sea level according to the high standard in Tibet plateau. Chairman Hu will be definitely eliminated due to his previous pulmonary oedema in Tibet. This way the PRC could eliminate what Japanese called Chinese---- the sickest patients in the Far East. (Thank F.T. for information)
Lucifer513:The PRC did all you can think of but defeated by Physics ( height and serious oxygen deprivation). Otherwise Tibet will have more population than China. Kham area in Tibet is already a part of Sichuan province. It produces Tibet symbol such as giant Panda and golden monkey. These have documented for thousand years in Tibetan. The present Qinghai province is previous Tibet Amdo area which found noodle evidence for more than 4,000 years which is characteristic for barley eating Tibetan.
You raise a really valid point, however, the modern world is different to that of 1830, and American's (as well as Most developed nations) believe that this standard of widespread removal of rights is no longer acceptable, and must be stopped, granted it is somewhat hypocritical.
Chinaman keeps telling the world that Dalai Lama practiced slavery culture but in actual fact, the chinaman is the master when comes to trading humans.
On September 30th, 2006 Chinese border patrol soldiers opened fire on a group of 70 Tibetans attempting to cross the border into Nepal. At least one young nun was killed in the attack. Over 30 people remain missing and are feared to have been detained by the Chinese authorities.
In the China I love, Tibet is not part of it. And Zhang Qingli gets the biggest thumbs down for hugest disconnect from what's going on in Tibet and in Dharamsala!
Why the PRC will organize Chinese inside, or outside of the PRC to create public opinion, to help its propaganda? You will notice that this regime brought newspapers, paid under the table for peoples join a demonstration, set up minority Chinese TV stations in western countries, forming web army...etc. These are all based on old Mao's HUMAN OCEAN warfare during Korean war. There has nothing new. You can not teach an old dog new trick.
Why old Tibetan built towers and buildings for more than hundred years within the earthquake zone with only moderate damaging, whereas Chinese built schools and official buildings less than 50 years old were completely collapsing? Why motorcars made in China can not pass German safety standard during collision tests? Chinese do not like Japanese but Chinese like driving Japanese cars or European cars. If they have enough money , even Chinese do not buy Made in China products.
Tibet free or not to these white or westerners protesters don't really matter. Their pure motive is to divide and weaken China. These poor so called "Free T-Back" Tibentants still don't know they are being used by all of these westerners.
what olympic spirit? i cant see any spirit in beijing, can you? what kind of spirit you mean? lock up Hu Jia for 3 years because he criticized the games? what kind of spirit? i cant see any spirit... please leave the internet know, blind following asshole
What a beautiful commercial... IF I could afford one I would buy a Fiat just because it is so beautiful... :) Good for Richard. BOO! for Fiat pulling the ad.
Why Chinese always ask anyone has different opinion from them must apologise? Because every ugly chinaman , or its regime dreams to be as emperor. This behaviour is based on their kowtow behaviour. Earl George Macartney refused kowtow before Chinese emperor in 1793. This probably was the first western official gave ugly Chinamen a slap in the face. Note: Bo Yang: The Ugly Chinaman is banned in the PRC
The Chinese really need to be less xenophobic and sensitive. These cars are not for sale in China and so the ad is irrelevant to them. They have hated, despised and tried to shun foreigners for a thousand years. This led to their cultural and economic backwardness and failure to implement reforms even up to the 1900's.
They are obviously not going to understand this ad and so should go and concentrate on having as nice a weekend as they can manage and forget all about it.
jo also know you are saying just shit....fiat is the only trade that is going up in the trade market... and Cina is very important... that's why Fiat is making soo many factories there... read about before you write here..
'The power to be different'? And the 'apology' to the Chinese goverment for making a commercial that has no political content whatsoever. Is this a joke? The power to be different first and foremost must be a state of mind thing, doesn't it? When values and principles are given up for profit or the so-called giant market of China, then there is little left to talk about the 'power to be diferent'.
any chinese here spread this commmecial into chinese news Median. Tell all chinese that Richard Gere is the number one support of Tibet riot. Built by Sid Grauman in 1926 the exterior of the theatre is just as exciting as its famous forecourt. Resembling a giant red Chinese pagoda, the theatre's architecture features a huge dragon across the front, two stone lion-dogs guarding the main entrance, and the silhouettes of tiny dragons racing up and down the sides of the theatre's copper roof.
I'm a Chinese myself but I don't offend by this. I think some people are just too sensitive. Actually China is symbolized by "Chinese" theatre in Hollywood. Both China and Tibet are "hollywoodized" in here.
The Chinese only think what they are told to think! There is no other reason for them to be angry about this ad, unless they were told they should be! How is this critical of China? Just because it shows the Tibetans as nice people? Geez, yeah, the making of this ad is something to be mad about... or wait, should we be mad about the slaughter and opression of the Tibetans instead? You tell me what's worse. Stupid sheep.
Bit true.... fiat sells all over the world.... and china is avery important markt with over 150.000 car a year... and they are there just from a few years... immagine what will happen with fiat in china in 10 Years...
respected fiat company u dont have to apologise on this ad,,u simply show the beautiful pleatu of tibet and it would love to others....we know china is a largest consumer but it doesnt mean that whol world is under there..we support u
I love this ad! It doesn't suggest one thing or another, merely that, as jayraskin puts it, "Glamorous Gere from Glamorous Hollywood drives a glamorous car to glamorous Tibet". If anything, I must say I rather like the ad because it reminds us of Tibet, something that should not be forgot. Pretty ridiculous that [state sponsored] Chinese media have attacked this ad. Seems as if the mere reminder of Tibet's *existence* is unacceptable in China. My read: guilty conscience!
what the hell is wrong with this advert. are all tibetans suppose to be eliminated from western culture now incase we upset the chinese government and any extreme brainwashed proto-fascists chinese who happen to take offensive. Down with the CCP. All hands to democratic socialism.
Objectively, one of the worst commercials i have seen in a while...made no sense.
This commercial clearly is geared to the noncomformist losers who don't know anything about past China/Tibet relations and only base their opinions on Hollywood's stances.
The reason it is controversial is cuz of the last statement, which is also Lancia's slogan, the power to be different. They are advocating change...be a deviate and to stand up against social inequities. No need for an apology tho
Even with all the noise about China Vs. Tibet,I don't see any politics in this ad like many of you.
IMHO the sense is that Gere, a notorious buddhist, thus a spiritual person, leaves the glamorous opulent (but here spiritually empty) Hollywood to really find his true self and realizations in such a small, insignificant but cosmically worthy gesture as playing in the snow with an innocent child. All of this,in the place closest to his soul. THIS is what makes this ad beatiful to who understands it
The thing is that several newspapers link to this video through articles about Chinese people loathing it. That's the reaosn its comments are so political ;)
Though, I agree with you, but still... the fact that the Chinese people actually are bothered that there's an ad which has some relations to Tibet is simply idiotic.
One has to ask why everything about Tibet makes the Chinese jump? I guess it's like interrogating a guilty criminal, they tend to give themselves away by their nervousness.
That is a beautiful ad !! How could anyone be offended? Tibet is a very beautiful country and Richard Gere's spiritual beliefs are different and very beautiful. Well done. China has nothing to do with this ad. Is China feeling guilty?
It's a misunderstanding. My reference to the German highways built during the Nazism was only an ironic reply to a comment from an other user saying "who built those roads in Tibet? The Chinese!", but that comment is vanished from here o_O
Yes, with money earned from stealing treasures from monasteries. Nobydy except chinese believe that all Tibetans were "slaves" to the Dalai Lama before the commies invaded in 1959. The chinese would rather thrust their media, which they (should) know is controlled by the commie-tops than western media. Enough said.
I think China should apologize to Tibet and buy new Fiats for all the Buddhist monks.
But actually Fiat doesn't sell cars in China, so who would fix them when they break down, which they often do; hence the name F-I-A-T (Fix It Again, Tony)
FIAT is so bad... like that is why they have the worst brands that build the most terrible cars... like FERRARI... ALFA.... MASERATI.... but I guess these other brands are really crappy... arent they?
you really don't understand nothing... and what you are saying can just let immagine how you are ... just a person with prejudice.... your comment could be compared with a whole in the air... without sense...
I agree with EstellaChan - great ad! Not harmful and targeted at China. This is not worth being upset over. It merely reminds us what a beautiful place Tibet is.
God, this commercial is awful, who cares if it supports a free tibet (who doesn't, except the Chinese), I mean just cos you have a valid political stance doesn't give you the right to make crap commercials
I watched this video because I heard that Fiat had apologised to China for it! Am I the only one who has no idea about why this warrants an apology? Crazy!
There is nothing in this ad that needed to be apologized for. Good grief!! Some people really need to get a friggin' life and stop looking for things to cry about. Get over it already!
Richard Gere and Sharon Stone are great actors. People love them for the way they portray characters in movies. Very few people know or care about their political and/or religious beliefs.
The commercial seems to connect Hollywood to Tibet through the symbolism of imprinted hands. I do not think that either Gere or the commercial makers really had a political message in mind for the ad. Glamorous Gere from Glamorous Hollywood drives a glamorous car to glamorous Tibet is all I get from it.
Great deal... over 1,39 billion Chinese dont even have the money to buy this car anyway... do you think FIAT cares about that portion of the market....

I strongly suggest that the Chinese Government to consider removing the 6 million Tibetans to Sichuan and call it the "Tibetan Removal Act".

No need for an apology tho
drunkpolak87 3 years ago
Even with all the noise about China Vs. Tibet,I don't see any politics in this ad like many of you.
IMHO the sense is that Gere, a notorious buddhist, thus a spiritual person, leaves the glamorous opulent (but here spiritually empty) Hollywood to really find his true self and realizations in such a small, insignificant but cosmically worthy gesture as playing in the snow with an innocent child. All of this,in the place closest to his soul. THIS is what makes this ad beatiful to who understands it
dalchimsky 3 years ago
The thing is that several newspapers link to this video through articles about Chinese people loathing it. That's the reaosn its comments are so political ;)
Though, I agree with you, but still... the fact that the Chinese people actually are bothered that there's an ad which has some relations to Tibet is simply idiotic.

This ad has nothing to do with politics..
Why should say SORRY to chinese..
why the chinese have to get angry all the time.. They killed millions of Tibetans and destory thousand of Tibetan monastery..
If one has to get angry..it is the TIBETANS not the STUPID CHINESE..
CHINESE KNOW DEEP DOWN THEY HAVE DONE WRONG TO TOBETANS..

One has to ask why everything about Tibet makes the Chinese jump? I guess it's like interrogating a guilty criminal, they tend to give themselves away by their nervousness.
greenaware 3 years ago
That is a beautiful ad !! How could anyone be offended? Tibet is a very beautiful country and Richard Gere's spiritual beliefs are different and very beautiful. Well done. China has nothing to do with this ad. Is China feeling guilty?

Who built the roads in Tibet that the car is driving on? The Chinese!
brightkelly 3 years ago
and who KILLS people in Tibet? The Chinese!!
engineerjatt 3 years ago
They shouldn't have. It's not their land. Let them build roads where they actually have the right to do so
sondano 3 years ago
And Adolf Hitler built highways in Germany. He's still remebered in the world for that. (i'm ironic, of course)
SidVicious86 3 years ago
What an argument! The Germans build the railways and highways which facilitated the killing of millions during WW2.
DanWulf 3 years ago
It's a misunderstanding. My reference to the German highways built during the Nazism was only an ironic reply to a comment from an other user saying "who built those roads in Tibet? The Chinese!", but that comment is vanished from here o_O
SidVicious86 3 years ago
Political prisoners built the road... and Chinese forgot to draw the lines :))))
CCP should apologize to chinese for cultural revolution and milions of innocent chinese who they killed!!!
sspe26 3 years ago
Yes, with money earned from stealing treasures from monasteries. Nobydy except chinese believe that all Tibetans were "slaves" to the Dalai Lama before the commies invaded in 1959. The chinese would rather thrust their media, which they (should) know is controlled by the commie-tops than western media. Enough said.

I think China should apologize to Tibet and buy new Fiats for all the Buddhist monks.
But actually Fiat doesn't sell cars in China, so who would fix them when they break down, which they often do; hence the name F-I-A-T (Fix It Again, Tony)
bsimpson1021 3 years ago
FIAT is so bad... like that is why they have the worst brands that build the most terrible cars... like FERRARI... ALFA.... MASERATI.... but I guess these other brands are really crappy... arent they?
lgomgf 3 years ago
you really don't understand nothing... and what you are saying can just let immagine how you are ... just a person with prejudice.... your comment could be compared with a whole in the air... without sense...

I agree with EstellaChan - great ad! Not harmful and targeted at China. This is not worth being upset over. It merely reminds us what a beautiful place Tibet is.

As actors, it is their responsibility to read the newspapers, and then say what they read on television like it's their own opinion.
dlammy1 3 years ago
God, this commercial is awful, who cares if it supports a free tibet (who doesn't, except the Chinese), I mean just cos you have a valid political stance doesn't give you the right to make crap commercials

I watched this video because I heard that Fiat had apologised to China for it! Am I the only one who has no idea about why this warrants an apology? Crazy!

Fiat has no reason to apologise to China over this ad. There is no malice conveyed by Fiat towards China regarding the Chinese rule of Tibet.
If the Chinese feel sensitive over this ad, then deep down they know they are in the wrong.

Fiat should grow some fucking balls.
China should STFU.

What's up people? Fiat should pologise Tibet for this shit

What a stupid marketing strategy! It reflects a company in desperation and struggle for survival.
Fiat is marked 'dead' in the eyes of 1.4 billions Chinese all over the world.

DESPERATE!? FIAT is ONE of the FASTEST growing and MOST PROFITABLE car companies in the WORLD. AND WHAT is SO OFFENSIVE about this AD?

Yea, cause chinese people is the best consumers in the world. Not.
Great commercial.
