@linn1000 Actually you would be suprised how slow the Cab M3 e46 is compared to the e46 coupe. I used to have a cab M3 and i thought it was fast untill i went up against an M3 coupe and blew me away. I sold it for a 996 now have the 997 S. My dad has just bought an M3 coupe today LSB and i drove it back alot,its very fast and i know in a heartbeat its not even close the can version. Thats what i have found anyway. Any other version of M3 i have no idea.
Check my youtube channel, the 997 s is by far the best car to drive. It is so smooth or with sports , amazing. A carrera S chipped takes it into 996MK2 GT3 catogary. I just adore the car.

Fact- Porsche drinks oil. Look in new Porsche manual, you have to add one quart of oil per 600 miles. This is within engine specs for them. I had a 2009 911s. Junk, nothing but oil burners!

this is a close race. i own a 06 997S and raced an 09 M3 last week.... it was neck and neck. but i also recently got up beside a new Nissan GTR. that car is sick it is so fast... at the limit even porsche is not going to hang with GTR but porsche has more style.
M3 has more HP, but lets not forget that the 997's rear mount engine and better aerodynamics come into play. and as SpeedKlz mentioned this 997 is lighter which is a good point, but I wouldn't discount driving skill either. I'm sure its a combo of all these. (btw, because I know they'll be replies, a "997" is the model 911 Cabriolet the Porsche is)
if you want a sports car... get an old e30 m3 or a ruf turbo r porsche. these both cars in this video are the standard in a mix of luxury and power affordable for everyone who can afford.

Most people that buy the convertible versions aren't really looking for all out speed. But BMW is doing some neat stuff with their also famous six cylinder engines, and a new gen of 911's are coming out. It's going to be pretty fun watching the new technologies come out on these legendary marques.

What is sad is that both both of these cars are fantastic but they draw zero attention now. There are so many of them, no one cares. If you want attention, get a Lotus, a Smart Car, etc. As Borat would say, P-magnets. $17k Smart or $45k Lotus vs $80k+ Porsche or BMW. The P factor cannot be compared. the pdk is only available on 2009 models. Those engines have direct injection unlike 07 and 08 models of the 997. If u had any of them you'd actually know.

i have had both these cars old and new, new 997s 09 will beat new e90 and will keep with an m5 beleive me, i have raced one upto 170mph. e46 m3 carrera s was quicker. now new 997 is quicker than v 8 m3. infact i have raced a gt3 with the 385bhp 09 997 and kept with it.
Unfortunately, this is the loser convertible m3 that weighs 400 pounds more than the coupe/sedan and costs a lot more for much worse performance. I would say the M3 Convertible is the loser M3 and has no reason to exist.

i dont get the point of this video or the race? you put up a naturally aspirated 3.8L flat 6 engine in a heavy convertible 911 against a big V8 that's newer and probably has gobs more torque and power also??? whats the point? this makes the BMW look sooooo bad. it would be more fair to run the 911S in a hardtop, not convertible...the 6 cylinder of the porsche does not "carry" its weight as well as the big V8 of the BMW can carry it's added weight (from the convertible).
also put those 2 on a road with ANY curves at all and your going to see a porsche pull away like it's racing a ford fiesta. i have seen 2 decent similarly matched drivers, one in a porsche boxster S and one in a ferrari F430 run a few rounds on a technical track...over 4 laps the boxster right there neck to neck with the F430. on the curves the porsche looked like it was outperforming what porsche even claims it can do. after sitting in a porsche for the 1st time i realized how it was special.
They're both convertibles, and there's only .2L of a difference. Seems fair to me. That said, I, too, would prefer an M3 Coupe (or Sedan) against an 997 C2S Coupe.
Don't underestimate the M3's handling, and remember that the Boxster/Cayman are arguable better handling cars than the 911s.
Anyway, both are great cars (even though I would take the hardtops over the 'verts.)
This video shows they have nearly identical power to weight ratios, yet the Porsche is faster around the 'Ring. This is just down to handling. So I don't know where you are getting that the BMW is much better at "steering"
BMW is within a whisker of being as fast in a straight line, and similarly close if not better on a road course. It also rides better, has LEGIT rear seat, sounds 5x as good and costs ~$25k less.
Do all these rationalizations change the fact that the Porsche is a bit faster? No - it IS a bit faster. If that's the ONLY measure, the choice is clear. I'd prefer the Bimmer because of all the above. I can have a LOT of extra fun for $25k and still have my M3 'vert.

Gustav, considering a 6 speed manual coupe pulled on a 6 speed manual carrera S, pretty comfortably, you would assume that the 6 speed manual coupe is notably quicker than the dkg convertible, and hence it cant be that much off the dkg coupe gearbox.
Either that or there is alot of driver inconsistencies within these tests?
because the M3 is still a upgraded BMW 3-series, you see everyday, and just a sporty coupe, sedan..., the Porsche is a real sportscar, with good looks and amazing handling on a track,thats why most people would spend the 30 Grand extra, but if you don't have the money, the M3 is a very good car to buy.

Simple. The M3 convertible is a poseur M3. It should not even exist considering how much heavier it is than the coupe/sedan M3s (400 pounds lighter).
The Porsche 911 has a soft top so it is much lighter than the convertible M3.

But BMW is doing some neat stuff with their also famous six cylinder engines, and a new gen of 911's are coming out. It's going to be pretty fun watching the new technologies come out on these legendary marques.

What is sad is that both both of these cars are fantastic but they draw zero attention now. There are so many of them, no one cares. If you want attention, get a Lotus, a Smart Car, etc. As Borat would say, P-magnets. $17k Smart or $45k Lotus vs $80k+ Porsche or BMW. The P factor cannot be compared. There are those that would laugh at that statement, but it is 99% accurate.

oh yeah woops i'm blind. but the porsche is still 20k more than the bmw. trust me nothing against the porsche. the porsche is more of an a striaght up sports car. both sweet cars that i wish i owned. i have a stage 2 08 sti but would much rather have one of those.

I have both cars, i wouldnt say the Porsche is much better, its a different sort of car for different reasons. Most people go from an M3 to a 911. Its the natural progression.

the pdk is only available on 2009 models. Those engines have direct injection unlike 07 and 08 models of the 997. If u had any of them you'd actually know.

i have had both these cars old and new, new 997s 09 will beat new e90 and will keep with an m5 beleive me, i have raced one upto 170mph. e46 m3 carrera s was quicker. now new 997 is quicker than v 8 m3. infact i have raced a gt3 with the 385bhp 09 997 and kept with it.

Unfortunately, this is the loser convertible m3 that weighs 400 pounds more than the coupe/sedan and costs a lot more for much worse performance. I would say the M3 Convertible is the loser M3 and has no reason to exist.

i've switch my taste to the 911 recently just because the new M3 is over-priced and it doesn't look that great. So, i'm saving my money for a 2006 911 4S. If the M3 would've kept the price competitive... I'd consider it but it's crazy at 62-80K, freaking insane. That's porsche territory where the M3 does not belong... especially when it went from a nice I6 to V8. Now it's just a muscle car.

i dont get the point of this video or the race? you put up a naturally aspirated 3.8L flat 6 engine in a heavy convertible 911 against a big V8 that's newer and probably has gobs more torque and power also??? whats the point? this makes the BMW look sooooo bad. it would be more fair to run the 911S in a hardtop, not convertible...the 6 cylinder of the porsche does not "carry" its weight as well as the big V8 of the BMW can carry it's added weight (from the convertible).

also put those 2 on a road with ANY curves at all and your going to see a porsche pull away like it's racing a ford fiesta. i have seen 2 decent similarly matched drivers, one in a porsche boxster S and one in a ferrari F430 run a few rounds on a technical track...over 4 laps the boxster right there neck to neck with the F430. on the curves the porsche looked like it was outperforming what porsche even claims it can do. after sitting in a porsche for the 1st time i realized how it was special.

They're both convertibles, and there's only .2L of a difference. Seems fair to me. That said, I, too, would prefer an M3 Coupe (or Sedan) against an 997 C2S Coupe.
Don't underestimate the M3's handling, and remember that the Boxster/Cayman are arguable better handling cars than the 911s.
Anyway, both are great cars (even though I would take the hardtops over the 'verts.)

Ummm no. While a very good handling car, an M3 doesn't handle quite as well as a 911. Just look at lap times around the 'Ring.

This video shows they have nearly identical power to weight ratios, yet the Porsche is faster around the 'Ring. This is just down to handling. So I don't know where you are getting that the BMW is much better at "steering"

BMW is within a whisker of being as fast in a straight line, and similarly close if not better on a road course. It also rides better, has LEGIT rear seat, sounds 5x as good and costs ~$25k less.
Do all these rationalizations change the fact that the Porsche is a bit faster? No - it IS a bit faster. If that's the ONLY measure, the choice is clear. I'd prefer the Bimmer because of all the above. I can have a LOT of extra fun for $25k and still have my M3 'vert.

Gustav, considering a 6 speed manual coupe pulled on a 6 speed manual carrera S, pretty comfortably, you would assume that the 6 speed manual coupe is notably quicker than the dkg convertible, and hence it cant be that much off the dkg coupe gearbox.
Either that or there is alot of driver inconsistencies within these tests?

because the M3 is still a upgraded BMW 3-series, you see everyday, and just a sporty coupe, sedan..., the Porsche is a real sportscar, with good looks and amazing handling on a track,thats why most people would spend the 30 Grand extra, but if you don't have the money, the M3 is a very good car to buy.
