Someone called this "past her prime",in years yes,in voice she is still "full swinging" to use a non-classical term! And her acting is "unique",certainly a singer-actress.I notice I almost forget to breath when watching her! An enormous plus is that you recognize her voice and acting out of hundreds of others;that alone is an enormous achievement.
Clearly past her prime at the time of this performance, but still far superior than any Fiordiligis at their prime. Seriously, Varady makes Kiri Te Kanawa sound like a joke. Just a remarkable voice in a supreme artist. Her Fiordiligi and Vitellia have yet to be surpassed. Only Carol Vaness came close.
@vitellia Clearly ... maybe in years cause she was 58, but in her voice, I don´t think so. She sounds spectacular for her age. So, "clearly past her time" here doesn´t apply and I´m not a Varady´s fan. Just that I completely disagree with your comment. But definitely, a superb singer.
This is such excellent singing and conducting. Varady with her clear boyish soprtano with gusto sings this to a perfect interpretation. FD instincts are flawless in the pit.

Yes, indeed. DFD and Julia Varady were married in 1977, over 20 years before this performance.

A superb singer, brilliant in this aria. She's so underrated. And in 1998 she was 56 or 57! Unbelievable.
