This is what Herbie Hancock is all about, providing unique and original music that appeals to a broad spectrum of listeners and folks that can and do appreciate classic easy listening jazz music at its very best...don't get no better, huh!
The reference to elevator music is quite valid. Early '70's arrangers pounced on this beautiful music and watered it down for TV shows like M.A.S.H. etc.

Enjoying or appreciating music isn't about taking classes in "Music Theory." Give me a break. The less academic education you have in music, the better; and the more you open your soul to the music, the more you'll really hear it. You'll never hear what Coltrane, Brownie, Silver, Mobley, Hendrix, or any one of these cats was really "talking" about from a textbook. Not a chance. JMO.
A new music friend went to links to share great classic jazz with me and it is an honor to have this in my Pearls collection; string another one Joey. TY
Imagine you're out on the open ocean at night below decks on an aircraft carrier. It's dark except for the red lights, nobody around but the night watch. You are alone at the controls of the Gates Yard control board of the closed circuit radio station, two turntables, a box of new releases from the Armed Forces Vietnam Network. You pull out this one, read the title and personnel, cue it up. This became my night interlude music, bring it up and under, up and under, read the announcements...
I think the term "elevator music" is misplaced here. What one person was trying to say was that the music felt "pre-arranged" perhaps to a fault.
"Speak Like A Child" has been in my top ten albums since the day it came out. Never gets any better than this, with Mickey Roker and Ron Carter, and Jerry Dodigon and those cats. This stuff has NEVER been performed since by Herbie. Out of the night, and gone!
@DeMichaelSuperFan NIce, me too. I was already a fan of Hancock before seeing the show, but i love the way it takes jazz and puts it in a futuristic setting. That show is so stylish
Herbie is an allround jazz man. Enjoys every style. This style i like, horns, desonants and harmonies, taking time to challenge your/my perception. I could try to mention more, but why should i.
@JazzyZenBrotha I didn't really mean it as an insult. I'm saying that it's really calming and rare. And when was the last time you heard music in an elevator? I guess if you're rich then you may hear a lot.
@jordanpasek - I'm by no means an elitist. I don't live in luxury & I have never been handed anything for free in my life. And I am definitely hetero, so the word "fag" doesn't apply to me. I stated an opinion; just like any person has the right to do on this open forum. You should try being less of a Pessimistic asshole. Jus' sayin'.
@JazzyZenBrotha That's weird, because you sure are coming off as an elitist fag. You don't have to live in luxury or have objects handed to you to be an elitist fag, being an elitist fag comes from your heart. Therefor, you, sir, can eat shit and die. Jus' sayin' .
@jordanpasek - So basically you're telling me to eat shit & die just because I talked about music education to another commentor? You're telling me that I should die just because you "assume" I'm an elitist? ha ha. Don't be mad. Lost, angry, self-hating trolls like you are nothing. Your page is full of people that left messages calling you out as an asshole & loser. It's proof that you hate yourself & you hide behind your computer typing hateful, negative comments. Narcissist troll. Jus' sayin'
@JazzyZenBrotha It's amazing how you can tell everything about a persons character from one conversation over youtube, Now whose the narcissist? Jus' sayin'.
@jordanpasek - LOL, hey Troll I give you credit for "attempting" to sound intelligent. But it doesn't change your self-hating, narcissistic, & dismal demeanor. LMAO!
@JazzyZenBrotha Well, I think this conversation is just about depleted, until next time, Elitist Snob. Also, you forgot to say jus sayin'', jus' sayin'
@jordanpasek - LOL Yep, until next time, pompous ignoramus. Oh, and don't be wasting too many people's time with your self-hating, vilely conceited troll banter. Gotta make sure you're cared for, ya know. Jus sayin'
@JazzyZenBrotha You know the two of you sound really dumb... just saying. I'm probably never going to watch this video again, so mention that to him. Fighting online makes you looks really retarded.
@Slipmastaflex - People with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder usually respond the way you do; because although they claim to stand for “rightfully letting others enjoy music” that same person will then turn around and not let internet users “rightfully comment” on an open forum.
@f5yeangel5 You've been listening to some good elevator music then. But really, this is amazing stuff, try to "listen" more instead of going after your instinct.
@f5yeangel5 you heard this in an elevator? I thought Herbie Hancock was strictly banned from being played in elevators. You must be mistaken...although Obama may have changed that law
@f5yeangel5 I know what you mean... just being silly. The gentle latin rythmn and lush horn arrangements were most definitly copied by clever arrangers in the seventies for elevators and shopping malls.
Anybody know where to find a chart for this song??

This is a great contribution of Herbie Hancock to an evolving and gentle yet captivating blend of piano trio and horn section.
