The player Allison mentioned was Wolfgang Overath, a superb german midfielder, left-sided.
Mullery has nothing to prove to Allison. Mullery marked Pele in the 1970 world cup clash. He did brilliantly. Check out Brazil : England 1970. A superb game too.
@MrCpfc69 Why are you supporting Allison , he took Palace from the 1st to the 3rd division between 1973-75. I suppose we were arrogant then , we were still world champions in 1970 . If Allison could have seen what happened to England in the coming years (decades) he would realise what a golden generation that was. Alan Mullery played in the best ever England team we were feared and respected, and i fear we will never attain those heights again .
Who's the first world class player that Mal mentions? Sounded like Overmars but then I realised that although Big Mal was ahead of his time he wasn't THAT far ahead of his time
compare this to the Shearer, Lineker and Hanson smug-fest we get now on MOTD... Big Mal has got so much more class about him than Mullery. he makes him look like a anxious little wannabe in this clip
@IndependentGeorge76 You have repeated in different words what I said on another thread recently. I stated that I've never heard anyone talk so analytically and intelligently about players and the game as Malcolm Allison. In complete contrast to the predictable nonesense mouthed nowadays by Shearer and Hansen. Malcolm was the first of the TV pundits 40 years ago. I used to be captivated by how perceptive he was. I can't understand how such an intelligent man was such a bad manager!
@houghgree2 Bad Manager , he delivered 4 trophies in 2 years to Manchester city albeit as assistant trainer; he seemed to lose his motivation after that. Mu
His latter problem with Allison was that he managed Palace and Mullery managed Brighton.... I didn't realise that they had this spat in 1970 and this probably led to the later fallouts, with Mullery calling Palace a twobob club, but what does that make Brighton?
this was after we got knocked out of world cup 70.big mal had ago at mullery and he went to studio to confront him.this kinda started the bad relationship between palace and brighton later on when mullery slagged of the palace fans at a FA cup replay.well what did mullery ever win!.and he was crap as a manager
was alan ball even a world class player i know he had ablity but if he was not world class then macolms point is answered when jimmy uses ball as an exsample of 1 with out accseration
mullery is a good punit these days on your on sky sorts which hes been on a few times he also does sky sports soccer saturday sometimes.
but if he tried to say to people he was as good as beckenbeur then hes wrong.he does not acept macolms opinion its macolms opionion that alan was crap at the 1970 world cup.i don't know if thats true but alan seems out of line saying macolm should have changed his mind
Wow.....I was born in 1970 and have never seen this before so thanks for the post. Do you or anyone else have the row in its entirety???? It would be good to see. And how funny seeing Jimmy Hill sticking up for Mullers as well.....must be a Fulham Old Boys thing! ;-)
@converse91970 No, I haven't seen the full thing. This clip is from the Big Match Christmas round-up 1970. If anyone knows the date the original was broadcast I'd love to know. It was shown sometime between August and October 1970. It might well have been after the Spurs-City game on September 26th.

I remember this spat as a kid! Mullery was an underrated player - he marked Pele pretty well when England played Brazil.
