  • Mason jars are my preferred method of storage. Years later, still comes out perfect. :-)

  • Nice..400 videos now =) Thank you!

  • @StrikeSoff Thanks Man!

  • Great advice on the jars my friend

    Another great video

    Happy new year

  • Good stuff, Kel.

  • That's awesome. I have also noticed that freezing causes the moisture to freeze, of course. When that moisture freezes, the ice spilts the plant matter, and when it is thawed, the tobacco will dry out very quickly. Also, freezer burn, maybe. Not sure about that one.

    Happy New Year~

  • I would say no, mason jars are the way to go, it last for years that way, and definitely buy Ball jars not only because they are good quality, they are made in the U.S.A. :-)

  • @Smokeringspipedreams

What do you think about pipe filters and do you use them, why or why not?

  • Hey Kel, did you saw the new Hobbit Trailer ?? Looks awesome

  • @msanchez2000 I did, and I am so excited about it. The lord of the rings is good, but I LOVE The Hobbit! It's my favorite book of the series and I have waited for thirty five years to see someone make a good movie of it. Woo Hoooo!

  • Thanks Kel, good to know. Scott

  • Great advice!

  • I take the same advice for tobacco as for coffee...never put them in the freezer EVER!

  • ...take a mason jar..Something like this....for god sake...whatever...love it kell..i use mason jars ...and dip them in to wax...works perfect

  • @superpelic That's a good idea Johan!

  • How many times a day do you smoke your pipe? I've been a pipo for only 3 months, but I find myself enjoying a smoke 2-3 times a day...sometimes with the same pipe. Is that okay?

  • @joejumps4fun However you do it is ok, it's your pipe my Friend!

  • hahaha kel that made me laugh with the thing about storing cigars in the fridge. "thats terrible advice never do that"

  • @J6R92 I actually did do that with a few cigars on that moron's advice. LOL I learned the hard way and then years and years later I saw someone somewhere mention that it was a bad idea.

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams haha what a fool. Ill remember no to do that

  • Good advice. Which tobacco blends tend to age better or worse, in your experience?

  • Great information! Been doing it like that for years & it does store the baccy well!

  • Err make sure the seal is tight on those plastic seal jars. Rule of thumb is if they pop when they open it means that its a good seal. Also if you hear air whoosh out when you put the lid on

  • Been using mason jars for close to 3 years now and they preserve tobacco better than anything else I have tried. better than humidors. I also recommend those glass jars with plastic seals. Make su

  • Freezing stops the aging process, no fermentation, etc. It will dry it out very quickly. Wrapped heavily it will not dry out so much in a good quality deep freeze but any freezer that 'self defrosts' will dehydrate and give 'freezer burn' to anything. The refrigerator is a very arid environment.

  • Sage advice as always Kel!

    Cheers,

    James

  • It is my understanding (I am not a microbiologist) that beneficial bacteria break down some compounds in the tobacco and in metabolizing those compounds produce the 'mellowing'. A process similar to any aging of meats, cheeses and of course, wines.

As for the jars-- the french mason type flip-top jars seem to be excellent (as will any sealed glass vessel).

  • Another good one, Kel!

    Blessings,

    David

  • Lol you like tagging

  • @gamerfan81 I love tagging, and the funnier the better!

  • Mmmmm....bacteria

  • @SmokingFists We are all full of bacteria my Friend, eating away at us all of the time, like that movie The Thing! LOL

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams LOL. I won't sleep for a week now.

  • @SmokingFists It's ok, you can sleep, ...... BUT THE'LL STILL BE EATING AWAY AT YOU WHEN YOU DO!!!!! :)

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams I can't escape! I'm going to live in a bubble now.

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams The vast majority of the cells contained within our bodies aren't even our own-- one particular scientific paper indicated that by number (of cells) Human are outnumbered by Bacterial, 10 to 1. Go Bacteria!

  • You could get those little moisture discs, and put it in the jars (hermetic or mason). Then after a week refill the disc again, to desired moisture. You could even use multiple ones.

  • @paracite Some folks do that.

  • What about purchasing a humidor specifically for storing pipe tobacco? I usually store my baccy in the jars that have the suction-lid. They seem to work -okay- but I go through my tobacco so slowly that I think just the process of opening and closing the jars makes them dry out over time. I'd still keep the baccy in jars but I'd place the jars in the humidor, think it's worth a try?

  • @UnboundObjectivity I think it's worth a try. I just don't have any experience with storing it that way. I just don't know. I think some people buy a little humidifying device and put it in with larger quantities of pipe tobacco just to keep it moist sometimes.

  • You turned me to pipes and cigars.com, probably the best place to buy tobacco I have found.

  • @Cigarsoapbox It is a great place. One of the things I love about them is free shipping over a hundred dollar purchase. I love free anything! LOL

  • @Cigarsoapbox And I keep mine in a big metal tin and keep the baggies so they don't mix, so far so good. Also its in a nice dark place.

  • As you may know I just purchased a humidor, as far as re-moistening the tobacco I was told that I could put it in my humidor for a week or two and the tobacco should be like new again. This could be another alternative to freezing. What you think?

    -Dustin

  • @AgPipe15 Ive never tried that, but it seems logical that it might work. The only objection I can think of is that many cigar mavens would fear that flavor from the baccy would leech into their cigars. (or marry into them as the case may be)

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams You know you have a point there. I don't know if it might seep into the cigars, but I love my pipe tobacco a little more. I was told this by a cigar smoker at the tobacco shop. So I really dont know what might happen unless I try it myself!
