Califones are great but I am having trouble finding a replacement speaker for my 1420 K. It looks like a 6x9 but it is not it is something smaller can anyone help?
@Jeffro321 Another standard size is 5x7. The trick is finding just one. Usually they're sold as pairs of car speakers. I've also seen 5x8's but it's unlikely. You might find an old Grundig on Ebay. That would be a great speaker to put in there!
I am a hobbyist with vintage electronics abt 25 yrs now. I likely have 1 that size and vintage in my stock..or if you wish to keep it completely original, I know a man who can recone it...in original paper..not foam (that foam surround is crap anyway)
You should find someone who services stereos, tv's etc. The amplifier is in need of restoration. The parts are suffering from age, (& only last so long)
If cannot find, I know ppl who specialize in those things..let me know..
Trance 88, I think your right about the hard beating on records, i own one, I got from the local school becuase the turntable didn't spin. Anyway i think the diamond side of the cartridge is easier than the metal stylus side. I need to replace the needle for i noticed the diamond is gone.
That record sounds really wobbly to me! At a guess the cartridges on these portables track very heavily - think pneumatic drill. ALWAYS get a new stylus as part of the renovation, with a diamond tip if poss. Sapphire ones wear out too quickly. Musonic is a good website to try for that. Also, play them on a level non resonant surface. That one was on a carousel! A small Ikea table with nails banged into the feet will level it and decouple the unit from the floor. A massive improvement.
those califone are awesome! i just won that same model off ebay just now. can't wait for it 2 come. seeing those units feels like i'm back in preschool because my old teachers had those same units. once i get it, i'll make a vid of it if the needle is in good shape.
this exact model califone wasnt the modelo used in my music class the one used was a stack-o-matic and it was mounted in a case and the lid opens and comes off and you put a record on it and go, and the speaker in the front was a huge full range speaker, lots of bass it had good treble too
jkman76 is there any way to hook an ipod to one of these like thru an aux input, or maybe if I found a busted one of these somewhere in the trash or something and the main amp still works maybe rigging an aux input to the main amp and bypassing the preamp i dunno
On the one i have the only jack there is, is a "external speaker jack" so you cant feed a signal into it. However some models do have inputs and as such all you should need is a patch cord plugged into the headphone jack of the ipod and a adapter to plug it into the large jack.
i have a 1960's(or 50's) tube amp from a motorola hi fi record player but i need to fix it and it has an input in the back of it and i tried my ipod on that and it worked but the audio was scratchy even at all volumes
the speakers in these things are huge for big sound, i remember these from school in music class they are in a case and they sounded really good, i wonder what these would sound like hooked to an iPod, do these things have an aux input by any chance?

I recently found a Califone 1430c and I'm pretty new to records so I have a few questions (since i dont have records yet)
Can it play any sort of record?
Can it play 12'' records?
and what are things i shouldnt do with a record player/records?
VisceralDecomposure 2 years ago
yes, califones play records of all speeds and shapes.

you are right it is wobbly as that one side of the record is pressed a bit off center side 2 seems ok though.

Nice clear sound, but I'm sure the camera microphone doesn't do it any justice. Cool unit too!

Nice record player, my grade school in Goleta CA had one in every classroom, but most were the older tube amp models. I'd love to find one.
