  • Andy Dufresne - The defiant - My hero

  • @mrslimshadyish absolutely! I love the way the piece reaches it's climax at just the right time. This scene and the one when they're drinking beer on the roof are just massive scenes. This movie brings tears to my eyes sometimes (:

  • G4shmaster is right, I totally agree. Greatest scene from the greatest movie ever made, I can never see it enough times.

  • I've commented on this video before.

Just check out the sound-mixing and editing on this clip!

Both ov which were academy award nominated in 1994.

  • Lyrics are just nonsense ;-)

  • I thought about looking up the words to this song. This scene moved me so much the first time I saw it and I've wondered for years what the women were singing about. But I've decided not to. Red's right; some things are best left unsaid, some beauty cannot be expressed in words

  • Sometimes breaking the rules SOUNDS so good.

  • Can't believe no1s commented on this for two months ! Ha best scene from the best movie ever made

  • the moment when Andy reaches for the record player to turn it off...and then turns it up...{chills}

  • It is called: "canzonetta sull'aria"

  • If u want to hear this exact part of "Le nozze di Figaro" type in "Sull aria" in youtube.

  • Excellent.

  • beautiful metaphore of hope

  • This scene brings me into a very emotional state. The director of this great movie moved so many people´s souls through this scene. For some reason I can´t explain and never been a Mozart opera´s fan, because of this duet I started listening to his great work again. This is my favorite duet from Mozart´s operas.Still, not my favorite opera composer but I admire much more his work because of this scene and of course, because of this great singers. They sound celestial!

  • Oh God its so great!!!

    It is great!

  • What can i say this film is PRICELESS!! Morgan freeman's narration always make the film, plus may i say thank you to AmericanEvita for giving me the title of, the film been after it for a while.

  • Goosebumps

  • anyone ever notice that the warden i dont think says one word to captain haldey throughout the entire movie. maybe a sentence or two but evry time sum1 needs taken care of not a word is said.

  • I would've done the same...absolutely one of my fav part in the movie :)

  • "On the breeze..."

    "What a gentle Zephyr..."

    "Zephyr..."

    "Will whisper this evening..."

    "Will whisper this evening..."

"Beneath the Pines in the Copse..."

    "Beneath the Pines..."

  • I have to agree with all of you guys, this is a masterpiece. But i was wondering where I can download and find other opera songs like this. Thanks in advance people.

  • @Mechagod4

Maybe you'll give (once more) Mozart a try: look for the Zaide Aria

  • check out.....'casta diva' sung by cecelia bertoli

  • @nice1kid What does Bartoli and Casta Diva has to do with this?

  • @Mechagod4 It would be better to buy the ppera instead of download. Don´t you think?

  • I like the contrast here: a prisoner who knows fine art ant a warden who reads stupid comics ;)))))

  • The human soul, the human spirit can never be beaten or broken. We are an incredible, tenacious, spectacular species capabale of breathtaking wonders. This scene shows it all, in brilliant, subtle and underplayed form.

  • Thanks Teresa - that was beautiful (as was your piece). :)

  • loved this movie!..great scene!

  • The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies, and you have uploaded one of my favorite scenes! Thank you sooo much!

  • The song is Mozart's Marriage of Figaro-Canzonetta sull'aria

  • but they aren't singing about anything particularly nice. they're writing a fake letter trying to trick the countess's husband

  • lol seems like something i would do if i ran a prison

  • That's beautiful.

  • Who are those singers?

  • In his new collection of his stories that were made into film, Stephen King says in the afterward that while he considers this movie as one of the best adaptations of his work, he does NOT like this scene. Perhaps because it was added by the director and wasn't in the source material (or maybe because it just strikes him as false.)

  • Haha he's probably just jealous because it wasn't his idea and it is sheer genius!

  • Stephen King, I'm your biggest fan:):):) and Mozart you were a genius!!!!!

  • I love this scene - inspiration even in the bleakest of external circumstances. Beautiful - the whole movie is just great. Morgan Freeman's narration is just so well written and performed throughout. Thanks for uploading.

    Sunbeam :)

  • Amazing scene.

    5 stars from Italy

  • I remember being in a video store where the clerk thought it was called 'The Crankshaft Assembly."

  • There's something ironic about that guard reading Jughead in the toilet and suddenly getting a dose of Figaro. Stunningly lovely music. Pity that door was not made of steel!

  • A wrongly-convicted man pissing off the idiots who rule him...no wonder Stephen King got it right when he wrote this..and that it is the most popular movie with men in the the history of the U.S.

  • This has to be one of the most beautiful scenes ever in a film. i just love it!!

  • was the shawshank redemption a novel by stephan king?

  • Yes it was.

  • Why aye man! A fantastic story...mostly you get it in a compilation book called 'Different Seasons'

The actual name of the novella is 'Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption' cos that was the film star that the main guy had a poster of, on his cell wall, that covered the hole he dug himself out from...You have to read it! xxx

  • The shawshank Redemption really is a fantastic film that turned out to be more than just a night out for me. The film was a metaphore of life, sad but inspirational in equal measure.

  • Great, Great movie. I watched it just last night for the 5th time. Great performances by all around.

  • SONG'S LYRIC (IN ITALIAN): Canzonetta sull'aria/che soave zefiretto/questa sera spirera/sotto i pini del boschetto/e già il resto capirà/certo certo il capirà.

    Next time, english translation!

  • great part man of so many amazing parts of that movie thanks for the upload

  • Without a doubt, one of the greatest movie scenes ever.

  • This scene always gets to me and Morgan Freeman's words are so poignant. The singers are Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz from the 1968 recording of Le Nozze Di Figaro/Karl Bohm conducting the Berlin Opera

  • AmericanEvita: do you know if that particular 1968 recording is available on CD? I can't seem to find it. Thank you.

  • this cd is available and it's one of the finest versions of figaro. do a search on amazon for "mozart figaro bohm"... should be the first result. it's a DG release, catalog number 449728-2. also, don't look for the same cover you see andy holding in this clip... the cover shown in the movie is historically possible, but the actual recording that you hear isn't. this scene takes place in the 40s-50s...

  • thanks for the info!

  • no problem. i live to spread the gospel of classical music, especially opera. :)

  • @AmericanEvita

really beautiful. but it's spelled Karl Böhm, an austrian conductor.

  • @AmericanEvita No i think you'll find that your mistaken...

  • @AmericanEvita Thanks for the info on the singers!

  • Absolutely Beautiful

  • can some one tell me what part its this from the opera or the name o the song????? please

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts - Le nozze di Figaro: "Sull'aria - Che soave zeffiretto" (Susanna, Contessa)

  • i love 3:09 hes like FUCK YOU BITCH and turns it UP!

  • for me, it's the best way to sing this part of nozze di figaro and although i see this opera as often as i can, i didn't hear it better than from Mathis/Janowitz until today.

  • This part of the movie was so beautiful. Just...amazing.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this...

  • i am so sick of all the spoofs so when i finally found this vid...thanks alot dude

  • great tempo.

  • What a great film and perfect music!

  • Deutsche Grammophon 449728

  • thanks

  • If you look at the very end of the movie it gives credit (IN THE CREDITS) to songs that were in it. I think it said that it was sang by Maria Callas.

  • I'm terrible. Every single time I see this scene I start crying! Mozart, you break the chains, you unstoppable wonder!

    I hope he'll 'capira`' !

    Many thanks!

  • música que Andy Dufresne difunde por toda a prisão é o dueto "Sull'aria? Che soave zeffiretto", pertencente à ópera "As Bodas de Fígaro" de Mozart

  • This beautyfull film witch this scene was on German TV this week. This scene is overwhelming.

    Cor Schorel

  • "Andy got two weeks in the hole for that little stunt". Anyone know who the singers were ?

  • Afaik, the singers are Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz

  • Is it? I don't think so. It's not possible to place a link here, but search on YouTube with the words:

    sull aria mathis janowitz

an listen to the second track/recording.

    Cor Schorel

    Netherlands

  • Yeah, it definitely is Mathis & Janowitz - listen to the pronunciation - it is identical in the Shawshank and second recording of that clip you refer to - no doubt about it.

  • I believe you. Thanks for your remark.

    Cor

  • The singers are Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz indeed. It is not possible to write a link here, but I sent you a message.

I have several CD's with highlights en also complete ones of Le Nozze di Figaro, but unfortunately I can't find a CD or DVD with Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz together. Perhaps I easily influenced by this scene, but I think this is the best interpretation I've ever heard. I've this film on DVD.

    Cor Schorel

    Nethelands

  • I think it's Janowitz and Popp.

  • No. Repeat: The singers are Edith Mathis and Gundula Janowitz indeed.

  • música que Andy Dufresne difunde por toda a prisão é o dueto "Sull'aria? Che soave zeffiretto", pertencente à ópera "As Bodas de Fígaro" de Mozart

  • amazing sound quality of that crappy old PA system!

  • Like "Elvira Madigan" in 1967, "Shawshank" built its big (and deserved) success on clever (and fair) use of Mozart. Search "Sull'aria". As often with Mozart, moving music built with surprisingly mundane situation and words:

    2007-0911.1433 GMT

  • Canzonetta 00:33 sull'aria "Che soave zeffiretto" 00:57 Questa sera spirerà 01:19 Sotto i pini del boschetto 01:53 Ei già il resto capirà 01:59 Certo, certo il capirà ----- Ditty on the tune "What a soft little wind" This night will end Under the pines of the grove And he'll understand the rest Sure, sure, he will understand 2007-0911.1431 GMT
  • excuse me, you've wrong...at 00.57 the translation isn't this night will end, but this night will blow

  • Thx for the correction - quite useful to me: I never figured (my limited English...) that "blow" could be the word I wanted here. Sun 2 Dec 2007 17:00 GMT

  • This scene never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Everytime I watch it I vow to be strong....but I can't, it is just such a wonderful, seminal movie moment. Beauty (in the guise of the Marriage of Figaro) introduced into a mean and beastly environment (Shawshank) and flowering briefly...before being extinguished again.

This movie is more than a classic, it stands apart, in so many ways.

  • You have the one of the best comments I have ever read on YouTube. I could not agree with you more on everyone of your points. The music, and especially the movie. One of the greatest films ever!!!!!

  • Your comment is absolute right. Special this moment in the film tells more as many words can say.

    Cor Schorel

  • classic !
