I'm Scottish and have played Scottish music a great deal of my life (living fairly near Dunkeld where this song is from) and never realised that The Sailor's Wife was in Firefly!!
I had one of those Eureka moment when I made the connection that a tune I play loads has been in a tv show I watch loads :D
I learned to play the flute inspired by this piece! And now I can play it!! :D ... well ... it's been a while, and I have to play considerably slower :P lol
In case you like this song, there's a version that Alasdair Fraser plays with Natalie Haas entitled "The Sailor's Wife/The Lads of Duns". It's definitely different, but just as nice. This song is originally a Scottish jig that also sounds awesome when played on the fiddle. It made me really happy to see it on Firefly :D
@garagatza Well duh, but I'm wondering if it was any exotic kind of flute, e.g. bamboo or if it was just a plain old transverse flute like you can get at any music store....
@TheDaruke oh Firefly is just the best, and kicks all ass - whether Western or Sci-Fi!! lol :P
No, realistically though, I think that this is VERY much what the world will be like if/when we do start flying around in spaceships (which they put a reasonable time on as well! - 500 years from now)
Anybody curious as how Malcom Reynold's and Jim Raynor from Starcraft 2 are in the same situation? Both outlaws from a corrupt government and both fought a losing war and both have a spaceship they use for mercenary work. Only Raynor's ship is bigger and has badass guns.

I'm wondering: if this song played at a Renaissance fair, how many people would just treat it as nice music, and how many would start cursing at the Hands of Blue?
@Vadergeek I can vouch for that as until a month ago I could quote Tom Bombadil (being a fan of LotR) but didn't really know what Gorram meant. Now I've seen the entire series (bar the Big Damn Film) and I think this song might be partially to blame...er...
hey ladies, there are a few parts of those dance sequences that are beyond hot. keep the clothes on, show some class. proof it pays off is right here. cuz that is hot; part is her character, but there is no doubt the beauty of a woman finding herself in the big dance. companions make edgy characters, women who get it, make great, women.
this music makes me want to cannibalize on a random wal-mart customer, then take whatever i dont eat, grind it up, and put it in the bathtub with the others. then every night get waist deep in it and beat off into the slop again.
i think there is even a cd called "celtic celebrations"
anyways, its a style of music originated in the celt regions of europe, mainly scotland and ireland. so looking up any of those tags with "scottish" or "irish" attached should also bring up some good music
It's funny, a couple days ago, I was in a bit of a rush to complete a paper on time. Then, I went to this video and started playing it. Almost immediately, my fingers were dancing along the keys to match the music, and by the time the video/ song ended, I had completed a nice chunk of work in less than 2 minutes!

@Vadergeek This is a Renaissance fair, so a vast majority of people there are probably geeky enough to recognize this song.

@Phelan666 Not necessarily Firefly geeky, though. Being able to quote Tom Bombadil doesn't mean you know what Gorram means.
