  • i have seen this loco go and my is it a beut. I wish it would start up again, as it was many years ago that i saw her run. I believe that she is currently in Virginia City, in the museum. The funny part is, I have an HO scale model of her, and it doesn' t work either.

  • Why is its bell ringing?

  • Safty regulations to warn people of a moving train

  • It's sad that the Inyo is limitted to 75 PSi, and can only pull one or 2 train cars max.

  • Yes, but the tradeoff is she has her original boiler! I wonder how many other engines her age can make that claim?

  • The William Mason, the John Bull, the Eureka, and I think the Eureka is at full pressure, but I could be wrong, probably a few more.

  • FYI, the John Bull that's around today is a replica, so it can have full steam pressure.

  • No other engine her age or older is steaming with their original boiler. So the Inyo is theoretically the oldest operating locomotive in the world because she still has her original boiler and engine set. The William Mason, Fairy Queen, Frenchruch, and Torchlake have had their boilers and engine sets replaced very long ago.

  • Very true. I'll drink to that.

  • Inyo 22 is the oldest operating steam locomotive on the west coast of America.

  • And still as pretty as when she was built in 1875

  • She sure is. She is the most beautiful engine in America that still runs.

  • She is a beauty, but my favorite is her older sister the Reno. Wish she could still run... Long live the Inyo!

  • Reno is my favorite too, but she needs a new boiler, new cylinders, frame repair, a new tender tank, cab repair, new plumbing, rod work, and new wheels & tires to run again. May Inyo continue to steam on.

  • I wouldn't think that the Reno needs entirely new wheels. Just new tires. I agree with everything else though; I want her to keep the old boiler too. May the Reno return to steam on the V&T one day.

  • Yup, getting the Reno running would be tricky, considering that the Old Tuscan studios turned her into a diesel engine and gutted her tender and boiler, but it can be done, at GREAT expense.

  • The diesel engine part is not true, and the all but blew her up. they over pressurized the boiler with compressed air. The rest is sadly true, she is gutted. If she had a diesel engine, we could at least watch her move.

The Reno will either return to steam or be scrapped, I don't think in her case there is much middle ground.

  • you should really say " the most beautiful steamer in America", otherwise you include diesels and they aren't as attractive. As for me, I love the Sierra Railway #3, which is equally as beautiful. I like the Inyo's old style whistle though, now that's what other old timers like her need.

  • no.
