  • Hauntingly wistful. Thanks.

  • Nice vid, theres a great few of these gems in Scotland!

  • great video

  • id brick it if my torch failed on me. not a place id wannabe be in the dark, not unless you have night vision goggles. but I do find this interesting to watch.

  • whats all the steam/ smoke?

  • Reminds me of the tunnels at the Glen, Rossendale.

  • is this near the bus stop, near the building that had a big yellow Y onit? and its just coverd with bushes? and aparently if you go near it it pulls you under:S? where is it? i n ever knew it was there and i only live round the corner!

  • i would h8 2 b in there if my torch failed

  • @peternc its light throught the day, not sure why though

  • I'd be terrified if I ever check out an old abandoned tunnel to find an abandoned secret base with all sorts of weird crap laying around..

Yet the exploration would be awesome.

  • Scary flashbacks.

I remember playing here as a child I was 8 years old when my parents moved me away (1980).

I remember an old wooden railway platform close by that you would take your chances walking through the building as the floor would give way beneath you.

This whole area has now been filled in by rubbish and grassed over.

In the late 80's I remember being able to see the other end of this tunnel from the Showcase cinema car park.

  • good

  • is somebody smoking at 1:45? what's with the mist?

  • why would they build such supports on the sealed part of the tunnel? my guess is water is behind the wall. i may very well be wrong but i would be too curious to not bring a pick and sledge to find out!!

  • @musclecarkid18 if there was water behind that wall it would need alot more than 2 brick struts to support it. I think its landfill the otherside so will just be retaining any lateral weight.

  • The only thing even remotely like this I've seen in Australia is in Swan View, an eastern suburb of Prth, Western Australia. A rail line used to meander through the hill towns on the way east. Part of this route took it through John Forrest National Park. almost two miles from the western path entrance to the park is a 1/4 mile long tunnel. single track, but looks very gothic. Mostly free of mud, forms part of a 7 mile walking track

  • used to go up there all the time , my mate nearly died up there

  • What happened?Im going up there in a few weeks.

  • i live near gildisome

  • can you get in from the other side?

  • Nope. Got filled in with colliery spoil sometime in the late70's/ early 80's. Other end is buried beneath a hill next to the showcase cinema.

  • that's a shame. i love this kind of stuff

  • Neverr tht far?x

  • that was a realy good vid mate but you have to go back and whith sledgehammers to get that wall down we need to know what on the other side. plese dont let us down

  • atleast you wer'nt tunnelpussie's and went in, unlike some other tunnel vid's i could mention.

  • looks like a fantastic picnic spot.

  • The real story about the tunnel closing is that a train carrying nuclear fuel crashed in there contaminating the tunnel so they sealed the train off with the retaining wall 1 mile inside, they isn't really any collery waste behind that wall

  • are you kidding?

  • it aint really a train tunnel =o it's a secret governmental underground experiment lab.... lol. j/k

was a great vid, thanks for uploadin' =D ...... take care =]

  • Thx,

Although not in this one, You're not far out with the secret bunker thing!, Box hill tunnel has one, Google "Nettleden bunker" for more

  • Right enjoyed that! lol I used to go in there when was a nipper, no quite as far as you guys, would love to go to the end, seriously consdering it now next time I'm home..lol

  • how far u get in smurf? wen weve been its always been wet and weve never gone further than 50m. who you go with and when?

  • This was the Leeds new line with another tunnel in Gomersal. I can remember the great stories my parents told me about. In the 1950s, You could get a train in Cleckheaton and be in Leeds in 25 minutes! Now it's 2 hours by Bus if you are luckily..call that progress

  • Nice video, i used to go there when i was younger, The blocked end is buried and is close to the showcase cinema.

When i was younger the story behind the tunnel been closed was that a train had crashed so bad that they where not able to get the train out so the sealed up the tunnel leaving everything behind, i know its rubbish now, but well back then it added to the mystery. We never got more than 20ft in however lol.

  • It one got even wetter at the weekend, water level rose inside it to about 7ft deep. You'd need a canoe to do it now!

  • They is another abbanded tunnel is Batley then xD

Any idea where that leads too?

  • Not heard of it,

best get yer torch & show us then!

  • I would do

But the gate is locked with a chain and padlock so the public cant not get in

Or i would have been in myself

  • dont forget ur whip

    *indinia jones theme song plays*

  • I found the other side of the tunnel today

    It leads out into Batley

  • Other end is/was near that cinema multiplex place & was buried in the 80's with the building of the M62/M621 Motorway Junction (as there was fear the motorway could collapse & have cars on the motorway disappearing off into a black hole XD ). Google image search "Gildersome Tunnel" & it'll bring up some pics of the other end of the tunnel.

  • I have been in there and its a 6 mile walk in and back

We know this because before we went in my friend reset his walking devise and by time we got out it was 12 miles

We were also rather pissed off that there was wall there ¬_¬

  • I've Lived Here All My Life And Never Known This To Be Here - Where Bouts' Is It???

  • Is in Deanwoods

    Where right at the end

The side where there is a skate park made of mud

  • It runs under Asquith Ave, you can access it either from Rooms Lane or go right through Dean Wood

  • The tunnel is a mile and a half long,not 6 miles.

  • when did you go down there?? I went in september and have some shots online.

  • Same here along with jb28' shots he took. (on flickr) went in late January '09.

  • how long was the tunnel in total, before the dividing wall etc??

  • Wall is about 1 mile in,

took about an hour & a half to get there.

  • on re-reading that, it was around 2300 yards originally

  • Are there any railway left behind?

  • Nope, all got lifted 43 years back.

Hard to imagine that there was a railway there once, the way nature has reclaimed it in that time.

  • i know lol

we went there today and my friend nearly lost her wellie in there. it was funny though.

    xx

  • Ecellent video,I must check this one out.

  • Make sure you get some decent wellies- most of the way is nearly knee-deep in mud!
