Poland's Solidarity party, for one, plus numerous instances in Latin America under pressure from the US imperial organs WB and IMF.
It's probably just smart politics by McCain. He likes to jump on the good side of something that has no shot of passing, then talk a good game in public, but doesn't do much on it outside of that. I doubt if this had resounding Dem support he would be on board. But now he can say: "Hey look, I am a maverick, I fought for reform, look at this..", it's a classic McCain move. Quite like how he helped get a commission to investigate intelligence, but then helped whitewash the issue from the inside.
That's very similar to how I feel about this. My observation about it is there's a number of details in the story that give me the feeling something fishy is at play here; that this reform McCain is now advocating will actually do very little good if it does pass. And McCain is just too schizophrenic for my trust.

I never had a problem with McCain at the begining of the 2008 elections. I cringed at his views on abortion rights and a few other things, but figured he wouldn't really go there. I might've even voted for the old McCain. Where I shifted was when he brought Palin on board and started cow-towing to the social conservatives. Everything I'd admired about McCain was gone, almost overnight. I think that's when he lost a lot of Independants like me.
Let's not get too excited about McCain. He's probably doing this just because he's not on the bankers' "bonus list" like Obama is. As soon as he gets on the list, he'll flip.

Dunno why conservatives are so eager to bash Obama when lots of his policies are leaning towards conservative ideals. Of course, he's left in social issues, which is why I'm in support of him still. I've more or less given up on hoping for progressive policies regarding other issues, such as economics.

It's probably just smart politics by McCain. He likes to jump on the good side of something that has no shot of passing, then talk a good game in public, but doesn't do much on it outside of that. I doubt if this had resounding Dem support he would be on board. But now he can say: "Hey look, I am a maverick, I fought for reform, look at this..", it's a classic McCain move. Quite like how he helped get a commission to investigate intelligence, but then helped whitewash the issue from the inside.

My observation about it is there's a number of details in the story that give me the feeling something fishy is at play here; that this reform McCain is now advocating will actually do very little good if it does pass. I never had a problem with McCain at the begining of the 2008 elections. I cringed at his views on abortion rights and a few other things, but figured he wouldn't really go there. I might've even voted for the old McCain. Where I shifted was when he brought Palin on board and started cow-towing to the social conservatives. Everything I'd admired about McCain was gone, almost overnight. I think that's when he lost a lot of Independants like me.
