@RustingVagina Dota was their creation, blizzard created it as a mod, but never put copyright on it because they thougght it would never be succesfull, Games like LoL and HoN use that mod, they saw how succesfull it has become, so now they use it themselves, they are not ripping anyone off.

@MrBoegela You see. Blizzard did NOT create Dota. Dota was created with Blizzards map editor by GUINSOO and eul. Then later came IceFrog who is the father of Dota ALLSTARS. Which then later was sold as an idea to S2game, hence HoN. Then LoL is the creation of old dota coders/makers. IceFrog now works for valve and is making Dota 2. Blizzard has nothing to do with DoTa, they mainly created the engine it was originally designed on.

But if those mods became a game on their own, with their own models, names and stories. Not to mention their own game companies and are protected by copyright law, then no, they cannot use DOTA.

Take HoN for example. They aren't allowed to make anymore Dota copies from heroes because IceFrog has the copyrights and can forbid them. :P

Blizzard can use their own stuff, not the things that IceFrog used unless they made some kind of a deal :P BUT! They can make a game like Dota yes, since it projects to it's on genre of games.
