  • Man, I'd love to read the first draft of this movie's screenplay. Sounds remarkably different, story-wise.

  • hes got the whole script memorized like he alreadys owns the role!!! hell yeah Mark!! lol and Harrison had no idea he was going to be casted as Han

  • Mark Hamill was a pro!!!

  • 3:33 ^^

  • Luke Skywalker was perfect as Mark Hamill in this movie.. TROLOL LOL LOLOLOL.

  • Wow. I didn't know the script had undergone so many changes in pre-production. It was interesting to see this.

  • Wow.

  • That is a lot of dialouge they are reading. And, this is just the audition - they were getting paid.

  • @VeryHugeAss Since when do they pay you for auditions and job interviews?

  • @dukeofcrydee I meant to say: "they weren't getting paid". I am just saying that Mark Hammil and Harrison Fordchave no idea at this point in time that they were going to get the part. They are so talented it looks as if they had been practicing these lines for years - true professionals.

  • that was the times before the joker met mcdonald's

  • I love Hammill's passion!

  • I wish him luck...but that other guy has go to go! Try Kurt Russel..

  • the writing here is actually pretty powerful

  • 1:55 trying not to laugh at harrison screwing with him

  • lol he said Hans

  • Man, they're both such great actors and have such chemistry.

  • Great actor too I meant lol

  • Marks quite a handsome man and a actor too xD

  • Compare this to the Russell audition and the cheesey guy doing Luke. Much more natural sounding.

  • he looks like Michael J Fox in this clip

  • he is soooo beautifull I love him

  • He was a very reactionary character, in contrast to Han Solo. He was jumpier. He played his part as the young soldier, looking up to the wisdom of the older soldier really well. Harrison Ford's acting is better, but this guy was perfectly cast.

  • Han "Well who's gonna pay me?"

Luke "I think there's some things we should talk about"

    ::bow chicka wow wow::

  • Mark IS Luke Skywalker!!! :-P

  • You can see how Harison Ford really shines in his role. Mark Hamill was good, but a little young in his acting career.

  • I have to politely disagree. I think Mark's acting is superb here. I love Harrison but Mark's is actually more nuanced and real sounding to me.

  • Always interesting comparing this to the finished movie and seeing the differences.

  • Sooooooooo cute!! :)

  • Harrison Ford does a great performance , both at this audition & in the movie !

  • He blows it away in this audition.

Sad thing is, there was a kid in the Phantom Menace auditions who does the same for the Anankin role.

But then they still go and choose Jake Lloyd.

    Sums up the prequels perfectly.

  • Lol thats pretty good!!

  • Hans xD Thats awesome. Can you imagine if it was "Hans Solo"

  • It sounds like they're rehearsing a scene from As The World Turns!

  • Is it crazy to think that this is better acting than some of the actual film footage?

  • I liked Mark Hamil's Joker WAY better than his Luke Skywalker

  • here is the proofthat mark hamill is a better actor than harison ford

  • @avq5 um, just for you to know, Harrison ford is just reading his lines, not acting. Mark is actually auditioning. You can't compare the two actors in this situation

  • @Elitecataphract oh thats why they only show luke..my bad

  • This dialog was actually pretty good sad that they cut it out

  • Is this in the dvd?

  • The "fear is their greatest weapon" line. Mark Hamil can still quote it off the top of his head. Probably because how hard it was to memorize it in the first place.

  • Jesus that Kurt Russel audition sucks compared to the ones with Ford and Hamill.

  • Princess Leia knows the art of mind control, apparently. Who knew. She's already a Jedi.

  • At the end Hamill has an "I nailed it" face

  • @TheAwakenedHeretic I'd like to nail him

  • he was a cutie

  • 0:03 "HI-FI"... oh sure :)

  • Love the urgency of this scene after figuring out that a planet was just destroyed...

  • does anyone know if he got the part?

  • @slapmyfunkybass Nah he didnt, he got typecasted as the guy who does the Jokers voice

  • @slapmyfunkybass nice comment steal

  • @slapmyfunkybass yes he got the part he played luke skywalker in all three movies.

  • @157grover It was sarcasm lol.

  • @slapmyfunkybass Think he got 2 stand in.

  • @slapmyfunkybass yeah he got it. he is the one who plays look in the movies :)

  • @MsBananabrains The characters name is spelled "Luke."

  • @slapmyfunkybass lol...????

  • Good God. He's beautiful.

  • @HulloKat good god, who the fuck cares?

  • @HeathenSaxon Me :)

  • @HulloKat indeed.

  • @HulloKat

    yes stunning looking

  • @HulloKat uk he's gay right...

  • @1BYEBYE1 Uh, good... neither am I o.O

  • 3:35-3:40 omg who talks like that :O haha

  • @MariaMoments people in the 70s as far as i can tell lol

  • @Dorkus1218 haha yeahh :P but they was reaally good!

  • God. Glad this dialogue got whited-out. :P I'm wondering if this was even in a script or if this was stuff just thrown together for the screen test.

  • Who talks like this? Star wars people. ;)

  • Does he call him "Hans" at 2.30?

  • Mark Hamill is the best joker voice from the cartoon

  • @dukeofcrydee The insipid triliogy was awesome. was the originals better? if course they were but the other triliogy had some deep acting and great lightsaber scenes in my opinion. i rather prefer the originals but the others are just about as good in my opnion

  • He looks good here, but I remember first time I saw Return of the Jedi.

Wow, he had so many lines on his face!

    Ps

They should do the whole movie like this, like a play, just for kicks!!! LOL

  • At the end, Mark was like: "Yep, I got this".

  • My friend Scott Greenberg and I thank you for posting this video. This was awesome.

  • Watch the original trilogy special features and it will explain, the star wars in 1977 wasn't the first star wars, Lucas shot version 1 with the horrible dialog and he hated it himself after they shot the whole movie, so he went to the editor and said he wanted to change the movie and the editor said no so Lucas fired him and result the whole film

  • @JustaYardWorker That took balls... which he apparently lost by the time the Phatom Menace came around.

  • @Atu7UP hey fagboy. kindly kill yourself.

  • @honkeytroll Come on! admit it! he is such a bad actor...but i've seen worse. You just like him because you are a star wars freak...

I must admit, he does an excellent joker's voice

    EMBE

  • he said this robot. When do you think they switched it from robot to droid?

  • @TheForceFollower94 LMFAO Lucan hahaha that's exactly what George was thinking. Thank god the lines got changed

  • @darthmaxrat88 Thank god somebody replied to my comment :)

  • Mark sounded like a young Lars Ulrich

  • @Adennos Metallica. HA!

  • Comment removed

  • I Will End You...jayrobson88

  • so pretty

  • aw god mark's voice HIS CUTE LITTLE VOICE I'M DYING

  • This dialog was awful. Did Lucas write this sh!t? Thank God he allowed someone to edit it.

  • @scm8487 lucas is the one that re eddited u dumb shit learn before you speak

  • I love Mark's look when he knows he nailed it at the very end. Smug bastard... with good reason.

You just know he's thinking, "damn I'm good." 4:01

  • ford does a lot with a little

  • 4:07 George Lucas in the background: "I want you to hang around a little bit, Harrison. There's more for you."

Translation from Lucan language to English: "You're Han Solo now."

  • 3:35-3:55 is the only SW-y part

  • The empire must've gotten here first...(joker laugh) HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, I can see why these guys were chosen, they work well together and are good actors.

I thought that Ford was chosen because he was a personal friend of Lucas. He really does well here.

  • @TheGranule

No, Ford was working on expanding coppola's office (working as a carpenter on the studio lot.) Lucas asked him if he wanted a job feeding lines to people that were audition for star wars. Notice that Ford is in most auditions but they try to keep him OFF camera (you hear his voice). He was never intended to play Han Solo. He read with (or fed lines to) 100 or so actors who were auditioning for the parts.

He was chosen a month before production started. He had become Solo;)

  • I've made posts here debating with others regarding Ford's audition and how he came to read with everyone. This recently clip with Jon Favreau has Ford talking about it from his POV. The Rinzler book seems to be accurate, backing up what he says here with what Roos and Lucas's POV. Ford makes it seem like a coincidence, but Rinzler's book tells there was more planning than that. - Search Harrison Ford - "Serendipity" here on YT

  • Ford got into Solo's role by helping with the casting, and hasn't been able to get out of it since. Not that that's a bad thing.

  • I'm a big fan of Stars Wars ever since I was little my aunt and uncle took me to see episodes 4 through 6 Special Edition and I went like WOW I want to see the beginning like Episode 1 which I did in 2000 or in 1999 then went to see second episode in 2007 and the third episode in 2009 which I cried. Not to mention the last third episodes fourth one funny as hell.

  • He was just so darn cute!

  • Oh shit, isn't that the joker?

  • @cannibalvector yup

  • @cannibalvector yes it is.

  • thank god he wasn't chosen

  • @sonnifer how u mean he wasnt chosen? its luke u moron are u blind?

  • @FrozenSparky Yes

  • So, did he get it?

  • @TheGrindsprint Yeah, he did get it. Hes Luke Skywalker.

  • @LordTheft Really!? wow! I can´t wait for the movie to come out! I bet this will land him many many big roles in the future!!

  • He's so young here.

  • This dialog sounds like the kind of stuff you hear in the prequels.

It makes even Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill boring.

  • "She's part of the royal family. They won't get any information from her, she knows the art of mind control".

So Leia was written as a Bene Gesserit?

  • Mind control? Really? She's not a jedi.

  • I love his face from 4:06 - 4:10! I can't believe that anybody could dislike this video! :D

  • "Fear is their greatest weapon." Luke being insightful! I forget if he was in the actual films.

  • JOKER!!! <3

  • hi fi lol !

  • Okay, good. Bout time. I would've known they were right after sixty seconds. Spared the actors all that bullshit dialogue, too. But I think Lucas wanted to hear all the 'good stuff' he wrote. Fortunately, we were all spared.

  • harrison ford :D

  • "Special effects are a tool. A means to tell the story. People have a tendancy to confuse them as the ends themselves. A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

    - George Lucas, early 80's (wait, HE said that?)

  • @nurb101 ...he said that? Did he develop amnesia sometime after?

  • This is better acting than the prequels...

  • To answer the question why do people hate the prequels.... the dialogue is really bad in the majority of the movies

  • What if when hammil said "hans" lucas was like "Cut! God dammit did you read your God damn lines its HAN you idiot HAN now get outa here and don't wait by your phone for a call back"

  • Why does everybody hate the prequels?

  • @hunterofthephoenix Because the originals were fun for kids to adults, those people got 16 yrs. older, and were then given an insipid trilogy made for little children (for the most part). Chock full of horrible writing and bad/wooden acting. Thankfully the lightsaber dueling scenes were great.

  • @dukeofcrydee honestly i think episode 3 is a masterpiece... can't say the same about ep.1 and 2

  • @dukeofcrydee Yup, you summed up my feelings on the prequels! ;)

  • @dukeofcrydee you damn mf I swear if u bad talk star wars again im gonna f u up, i dear u mf

  • @DreamyBoy021 See kids, this is why you need to stay in school and not do drugs. Well, at least not the drugs this guy is on.

  • @dukeofcrydee yea im 17 and 1,2,3 were really bad 4.5.6 omg they were sooo good if kids cant see that i dont know what to think about my generation :(

  • @DreamyBoy021 Lol you're an idiot if you think the prequels are anything but awful. Go watch the RedLetterMedia review of them and you'll agree with me

  • @dukeofcrydee

    i totally agree!!!

the 70's and 80's star wars with hamill and ford were the best!!!

  • @dukeofcrydee Lightsaber scenes in the original have so much emotion. You don't find that in the prequels

  • @TimTehPilot Not entirely true. The ending battle with Darth Maul was intense. The ending flurry w/ an angry Obi-Wan was great. The worst ever was the original ANH Death Star duel. You have to take into account story and character development. The prequels weren't supposed to have much emotion. They made up for it in technique and showmanship.

  • @dukeofcrydee

"The ending battle with Darth Maul was intense"

No, it wasn't. It was a choreographed mess. Obi-Wan sees his master die and obviously gets very angry. You expect somekind of emotion in the pursuing fight with Maul but what happens? a soulless, spiny, twirly load of shite..

The best LS fight in all of SW was the very last one between Luke and Vader. It was simple but packed with emotion.

  • @RPFS2008 well I agree the prequels are stubbornly split down the middle between supporters and non-supporters, Darth Maul was played by Ray Park, an experienced choreographer who was trained in martial arts. I think it was set up great and realistically, but that's up to interpretation and opinion.

As far as Obi-Wan's battle, a Jedi isn't supposed to show a lot of emotion like anger and fear...duh ;)

  • @hunterofthephoenix the awful script the wooden acting ,the fake greenscreen sets, and jar jar binks ,i could go on.

  • @conortalbot

    i liked them.

the old ones are so cheesy..

  • @hunterofthephoenix Of course they're cheesy to a 17 year old. If a movie doesn't have tons of CGI and looks like a video game, the Attention Deficit Disorder generation can't appreciate it.

  • @polosortsman

    that's what you say..

  • @hunterofthephoenix Why didn't you just say "I know you are but what am I?" LOL You wouldn't know a good movie if it hit you in the face. Makes me sick that the movie industry today panders to nitwits like yourself.

  • @hunterofthephoenix I guess it's a nerd thing

  • @hunterofthephoenix

Google "redlettermedia" and check out the plinkett reviews for the prequels, no one has detailed the flaws better.

  • @hunterofthephoenix because they exist.

  • @xaayer

well i hate you and guess why

  • @hunterofthephoenix Because you have no taste for movies and only enjoy flashing lights and below sub-par plots? I'll pray for you.

  • @xaayer

    like i care lol

    i'm open for every movie

  • @hunterofthephoenix That's good. More than I can say. *I'm cynical about new stuff anyway* :P More power to ya

  • @hunterofthephoenix Are you fucking serious, farm boy?

  • @hamsteronspeed01

    what's your problem bitch?

maybe I'm a farmboy just like Luke :)

  • @hunterofthephoenix no problem m8. I think I was trying to be cute, not rude. Soz. There's a lot wrong with the prequels and I'm sure you've heard the many arguments. It's good that you like them; maybe they were released at a special time in your life or they just floated your boat or whatever. I really wanted to like the prequels, a lot of us did. We all have the DVDs on our shelves... they just were nothing like the above and the originals.

  • @hunterofthephoenix Are you kidding me?

As far as the overall storyline, the preqs are Ok. Then you get to the weak scripting, bad directing and crappy acting (Christian Haydensen). Rick McCallum didn't help matters at all; there is this new Hollywood focus of making movies along the "Titanic" formula-- appeal to the 12 to 15y/o girl set to make a movie profitable.

The Star Wars: Clone Wars TV show is everything the movies couldn't be. I demand Lucas re-do the prequels with that production crew.

  • @sk8ites

yeah i was only kidding you..

  • @hunterofthephoenix . Have you seen the originals?

  • @ViciousMandy

    several times

  • @hunterofthephoenix watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI

  • Lucas had an eye for talent. None of the actors, except for some of the older ones, were known actors. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fischer were amazing actors, completely under rated. Harrison Ford was recognized in his career obviously, but the others were excellent as well.

  • Han Solo: I'm not afraid of anything.

Yoda: You will be. You WILL BE.

  • Thumbs up for Mark Hamill. It's no small feat that he could say any of this cardboard dialogue with a straight face, nevermind with the amount of conviction that he has here.

  • He called him 'Hans' and still got the gig. G'wan Mark.

  • Jesus, Mark Hamill is fucking perfect

  • thats a terrible dialogue!! geez i m so glad it was cleaned up in the movie.

  • Corvette Summer? lol I almost forgot he was in that turd.

  • wow...you can tell that Mark really got into his role here

  • this is horrible, horrible dialogue. Obviously Lucas' draft and clearly somebody cleaned it up before they started shooting. Obviously nobody cleaned it up when they went to shoot the prequels.

  • @jayrobson88 In his Michael Parkinson interview from 1976, Alec Guinness hinted that he had rewritten huge amounts of the screenplay with Lucas. And in a number of books on the making of Star Wars, Lucas was constantly asking Sir Alec's advice. The fanboys would hate the idea, but Episode 4 was probably written and directed in part by Alec Guinness.

  • @jayrobson88 NUFF SAID

  • @jayrobson88 Yes somebody cleaned it up, George Lucas. This was filmed on Dec. 30th 1975 and the lines are from the 3rd draft. In the span of 3+ months after this, Lucas spent nearly ever waking hour reworking the script and dealing with the movie. He created a 4th draft, then a revised 4th draft that was then tightened & lightened by Gloria & Willard Huyck. This was at the last minute when it was already a screenplay. So significant but minor changes. All the meat at that point was Lucas.

  • @dukeofcrydee I've actually heard there was a heavy edit post-production that removed many of Lucas' dialogue and pacing problems. It seems likely that this was the case, given the fact that Lucas didn't write a "Star Wars" screenplay for another twenty years, and when he did, his dialogue was panned.

  • @dukeofcrydee Shame he couldn't be bothered to do similar huge rewrites on parts 1-3....

  • @dukeofcrydee Can you tell me why Lucas could write decent dialogue back in the day, but then he makes everyone talk like droids in the prequels?? (Maybe they didn't do enough rewrites???)

  • @dukeofcrydee I believe the annotate screenplay paperback actually denotes which lines were added or changed by Gloria and Willard. I'd guess it's accurate, but from what I remember, they didn't tighten as much of the script as one might have thought. I still wish they or someone else had spruced up the prequels' scripts more, and even I don't think the films were all that bad.

  • @jayrobson88 I don't think it's that Lucas can't write. He's just become lazy.
