Yes it was staged ...well sort of.

The announcer and several staff were in on it, but it all went wrong. Jeff was supposed to keep stopping and then pulling away. Unfortunately he stalled and someone (not in on it) jumped him, causing him a broken finger and a sever loss of pride as he pulled him out of the car.

As a sad footnote to the story Jeff died just five month later in a bar fight in Dresden Germany.
