Would it be normal then to say "the rolling stones is awesome", or "the Beatles is awesome".. not to get into an argument but I would say if 36 crazy fists consisted of 1 person and that was his\her pseudonym then you would be correct. As 'they are' a collective then 'are' would be the correct English grammar.
