Nice vid! I had to glue back the "bell flair" on my clear tone mute as well, thought i was rough using it but now I think its rather a question of quality
@asoftoday: Mutes usually run around thirty bucks or so. The plunger is lots less, but you need to pick it up at the hardware store. I think it is good to drill out a hole in the plunger, so air does not build up when you are playing "closed". Some mutes may be a bit more than thirty (a good bucket mute may be more costly...). Good luck with the pit orchestra thing. Thx for posting.
@trumpeteer247 Yes. I know the guy who did those recordings. He is a San Francisco area trombonist, and a very nice guy. He is a true master of the "wah-wah" effect.
Hi! I just picked up a harmon mute for my trombone and just love the different sounds I can get from it. I'd like to learn more about all the possible effects, though, especially the kinds of sounds Tricky Sam Nanton was able to achieve. Where can I find some good advice on wah wah and plunger technique?
Will try to get this done once I get more settled in my new home...moving is really a drag and I've got lots of boxes to go thru to find stuff and so on.. thanks for looking at my videos
You are right! That is a good point. That was quite a hit tune, and lots of people would have heard solotone mute on that one. . I will incorporate that into my lectures on mutes in future sessions. Thanks Walt!
Thanks! I am a former sax player and dabbled with trumpet. Most guys remove the stem from the harmon mute. The Basie band has a bunch of recording/charts with the Bucket Mute which is a unique sound too! Of course the ever popular plunger! The Glenn Miller Band still uses the Hat Mutes too! I was with The Tommy Dorsey Orch. from '88-03 (vocalist). Buddy Morrow was "ALLERGIC" to mutes!
the Solotone mute has been used MANY times throughout Big Band history, in many of the recordings of Tommy (his band a little bit after "The Fight") he many times playes 2 solos in songs where the 1st. solo he playes with the mute and the 2nd. without mute, very good sound with both. But again, the solotone mute was used, Glenn Miller did alot of section work with it (check out Glenn Miller's video of "At Last" on here) I like to use it when I play the Theme from "The Godfather" Thanks crtune!
Personally, though it's true that the Harmon mute sounds better on trumpet, I think the Harmon gives the trombone a nice tone (cup mute sounds better though). The solotone, your right... Not worth its weight if your lugging it around
Thanks. This helped.

What is a good substitute for solotone mutes? Don't really have one, and have a show in 2 days for which I was given the music tonight.

how much do you think it costs to buy these mutes? I need them for a pit orchestra. it's a version of "Wizard of Oz".

Any chance you could play the Harmon mute without the stem?

without the stem you get a better and louder sound, but without the hand "wah" effect.

You are right! And I think the Godfather music would sound great with that narrower, nasal sound the Solotone gets.
I guess the idea was to "cut through" using this must to change the harmonic content to more like an Alto Sax...
I like some of those sounds, and am a fanatic about using it when the period style demands it's use.

Very nice playing. Rarely used, but good to know how.

You can't really show a how a harmon mute sounds and only play it with stem in.
