  • I adore upright bass intro

!! Great Charlie Haden. I bought an upright bass because of this song!

  • nice !...

  • Would love to know more about this. Where was it performed and who are the dancers? an older man and younger , taller woman doing a tango-ish dance to the beautiful music with the author singing his own song

  • @tomasrugha This was taken from an episode of Great Performances on PBS shown back in the mid to late 1990's, if I am not mistaken. It was a collection of short film interpretations of Kurt Weill's music. It is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, I don't think they've released it on DVD? You can buy the CD though. It looks like bobby4000 has posted many of the songs though. Yay! Hopefully, the above information is correct... if not, someone correct please? Thanks. :)

  • @chansonex ....the dvd is out there...a gem of music...fim and dance....marvellous

  • @drdogan1

Thanks for letting me know! I will have to keep an eye out for it.

Gary Vila Ortiz. Rosario. Argentina.

  • this is the best version of the song i've ever heard!

  • The man does look an eery amount like Kurt. It's sad that he only lived fifty years. Imagine what works could have been, how long his style of lyricism could have lasted.

  • amazing..

    thanks dear bairesco for sharing..

  • @bozenkaP

    Thank you, dear friends!

  • The dancers can't actually be Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenja but they are dead ringers!

  • Such lovely music - meaningful, romantic...making you want to sing - dance, both...and be held. I miss this kind of music terribly, that leaves you in 'a cloud' thinking/feeling and remembering ! I hope to discover "Lost Up Here In the Stars" my other favorite....this is wonderful !

  • is this kurt weill?

  • I'm so happy to see this!

It's impossible to have a favorite song..But if I did "Speak Low' might be it.

And to have Kurt Weill singing it!

I love Ute Lemper singing this song on her Kurt Weill CD.

  • Me too, but i have to fetch the kleenexes. Do not use mascara while listening to this song!

  • the singer sounds soooooo german :)

  • Oh yes - he does sound so very German probably because he was indeed a German named Kurt Weill - this is a rare recording of his voice & Charlie Haden laid his track over the original Weill piano/vocal track....

  • amazing, i had know idea that this is "his master's voice" maybe because i didn't see the video but just listened to it :) great!

  • Amzaingly thrilling... The CD "septmber songs" of Weill songs performed by various artists including this gem - is a must...

  • Great!!!!!

  • Intriguing, Futuristic, Minimal Bass virtous Rithim balance in Athletic performance ahead of his creation time. last state of the Art melody & scene, as a Whole concept & Praxis

  • Beautiful.

Remember Hal Willner's beautiful project about Weill:

Lost In The Stars: The Music Of Kurt Weill A&M 395 104-2 (Charles Haden with Sharon Freeman, #19 Speak Low)

  • Totally awesome. What a clever video. Kurt dancing. Wonderful. This is so beautiful that I want more. Thank God for Nash's lyrics and Weill's music. thank you

  • this is great!

  • I only hope the great Kurt Weill arrangements get more attention by today's artists.

  • Bravo

  • spettacolare!!

  • so beautiful, thanks for posting this. i have this on vhs and my vcr has been on the fritz, so i haven't seen these for so long. so nice to see some great stuff on youtube.

  • i dont know what charlie has, or doesnt;

i dont even know this song well

but i cant stop listening to him.

haden lives in gorgeous slow motion

(a legend jams with a favorite record of theirs!!)

what a cool video. thanks for posting,. :-)

  • A moving all-round performance. Weill was an innovative and much underrated composer.

  • such an even tone on every note

  • Greatest living bass player. Thank you for posting the work of a truly remarkable jazz legend.

  • Really? What do you think about Dave Holland then?

  • Best bass sound in history of jazz

  • you forget mingus, red mitchell ....

  • they are great too:)

  • And the great composer's voice is so beautiful and seldom to be heard: so much feeling and love

  • beautiful- just beautiful

  • what year is this from?

  • It was filmed in Jan/Feb 1994 in Toronto and released late that year

  • this is lovely.

When are they going to release September Songs on DVD?

  • What a magnificent and audacious concept: Weill wrote the music, his photograph looms in the background, he dances with the tall lady, and he sings to us. It is a case of Weill, Weill,Weill,Weill plus the lady and the gent. Fantastic!

  • What a magnificent and beautiful performance! Thank youbobby4000!

  • I saw Charlie play a duo with Sam Rivers in Vancouver BC back in 1980/81. A soul rich in music.

  • ARRGGHH!! I'm trying to find the name of the video-PBS special that this clip is from. I saw this tribute in whole when I was in high school, and it still stayed with me. In particular, there is a scene where an actress dressed like a german officer sings of the emotional pain of losing the war, and of reconstruction. Does anyone have any info on this scene??

  • Broadway play in 1972 (LoveMusik) to Weill's background music. Think it was Kurt Weill actually singing Speak Low.

Played at the Theatre DeLys in '72.

Speal Low came from One Touch of Venus, 1943 Broadway

  • What a soft and gentle voice Kurt had. The dancing is really sweet, makes you think of Kurt and Lotte as two angels up there in heaven.

  • Nice touch, making the dancers look like Kurt and Lotte. Anyone know who choreographed this? Guess I should research the special.

  • truly beautiful

  • truly beautiful

  • Charlie and Kurt - two geniuses, ahead of their respective times

  • how can over 2100 people have seen this footage and still no comments? well let me be the first. i think this is a pretty amazing piece.

  • so so true. such lyricism- such soul...
