Hockey is a unique sport because it encompasses so many different elements and as someone who played hockey and was an enforcer (someone who fought a lot) I can honestly say that if fighting were removed it would no longer truly be hockey.

The Soviet teams, the Swedish teams the Czech teams they all fought when they played each other, often the teams still fight each other. Its all part of a very passionate game.

I would rather fight than be speared or hit from behind. I agree fighting is done more than it should be, a clean but big hit shouldn't necessitate a fight.
