Okay - so it's not the best performance of Lefebure-Wely one's ever heard, but I believe it's the only performance of him on a Cavaille on the web... It's great just to hear the combination of composer and instrument. Regards, Paul.
Interesting comment, as it does not have the Dutch/German 'dry' pedal sound of other Van den Heuvels (in particular that at St Eustache, which, despite its appearance, still sounds distinctly 'non-French').
St Eustache is another story. That was imho ruined by J. Guillou's wishes/instructions to VDH. I played at Eustache and I don't like its sound either. Too "american" if you get what I mean. Too bad. It's the bestlooking organ ever... :)
@GJmusique you don't know anything about the VDH organ in St Eustache. The composition of the organ is not from Jean Guillou but from the expert of the city of Paris who was himself artistic director of Casavant Freres. 95% of the wishes of Jean Guillou were refused by the organ commission or else, the organ would have, for sure, a minimum of 20 stops less than today, and each would have a solistic character like in Zurich Tonhalle organ.
Well, I didn't know that detail in deed. Which is different to "not anything". Perhaps you should watch your tone- this is how them fiery debates on youtube start. Geez.
On another note, I DO find that the Eustache organ has more exotic stops then the Tonhalle organ, but that must be me then.
Sorry GJmusique, I admit that i'm a bit agressive but there are so many persons who speak about St Eustache organ as they know all about it whereas they say whatsoever which is absolutely wrong. Indeed, St Eustache has more details stops than the Zurich orgel, because they don't listened Jean Guillou about that. In his conception, each stops is a solist himself that makes this organs absolutely perfect!! My organ teacher worked with him at the Tonhalle organ & told me that the organ is finest.
I played at St. Eustache and I didn't like it. It's way over the top, the reeds are too loud, the mixtures have too many ranks and scream, and then there's a load of weird aliquots... even when I tried to play a classic french piece by Franck with a basic foundation stop registration, I was like... "huh?". I can't speak for the Tonhalle organ as I don't know it very well.
When did you play at St Eustache? Because there was a period during whichone the organ was tuned by a french organ builder who qualify himself as a great organ builder but who is in reality one of the worst!!! He don't know what is Harmony...But when the organ was kept by J.L VDH, it was fantastic. For me it's one of the most beautiful organ all over the world, but if they had listened Master Guillou about conception, it would be better for sure!
I don't remember exactly, must be at least 5 years ago. I think it's a matter of taste, I like the more classical french symphonic organ like St Sulpice. I don't like the music by Guillou and Messiaen at all. The way Latry 'improvises' at ND de Paris with its terrible tutti.. I think the St. Eustache organ fits to this modern style more than the classical 'belle epoque'-era. As for the aesthetics, the organ case of St. Eustache is the most beautiful in the world without doubt!!!
It's Quite funny because I don't like St Sulpice at all. This organ is not really fine in his sound, to much noisy, I prefer St Eustache or eventually St Ouen in Rouen. I don't like Messiaen too, but I love Jean Guillou. I was at ND last saturday evening because one of my friends played the "sortie", I hate this organ and most particulary his horrible chamades, I prefer those of St Eustache!!
Interesting how tastes are different. Sulpice noisy? You mean the barker machines? Of course Rouen is great. I also like St François de Sales in Lyon a lot and Toulouse, St. Sernin.
The only 'modern' french organ music I can stand a little bit is Pierre Pincemaille ;-)
No not only the barker machines, the organ is not clear, it does a lot of noise not sound and I hate that! But I think you will appreciate the new Symphonic organ built by our favorite Van den Heuvel in Copenhagen. I've seen Peter (Van den Heuvel) last tuesday when he came to Paris to take the movable console, he gave me the first CD of this organ, it sounds greatfully even if the program isn't really intersting...
I have noticed since I often listen to the organ recitals (twise a week) in Katarina kyrka in Stockolm that the Van Den Heuvel organs got a very different tone. The organ in Katarina church is extremely powerful. The reeds and especially the Contra Bombarde 32' makes the benches shake. However, my point is that the Van den Heuvel organs and the Cavaille Coll organs are intonated very differently.
The Cavaillé-Coll organs has a very mellow and soft tone while the Van den heuvel organs are much more assertiv, but as in the organ in Katarina church a good way. The flutes are very mellow but the reeds are the opposite which creates a very interesting and different tone, but I prefer Cavaillé-Coll organs thoe:P

I agree over the St Eustache console: it's wonderful. Pity about the sound that comes from the pipework though! P :-)

It's actually a Van den Heuvel organ. They are very good at replicating the sound of C-C's organs though. ;)

The best Van den Heuvel-organ stays in Katwijk. Listen to that on youtube, played by Jaap van Rijn.

You are very lucky to have the ability to play a CC organ.

I've already heard the begining, I do not know when.

Have you played this piece the first time while recording it? I'm not amused...
