the ps3 doesn't have cores, the cell has units called SPE's which are not cores at all, cores run in parallel and have cache built into the core, the SPE's do not, the PPE is close to a core, but only close. this guy sounds like he needs to take some classes on hardware.

yes, installing YDL doesnt prevent you from playing ps3 games, it makes a diferent partition in the HDD so u can have both OSs working in one harddrive(not at the same time)

in order to "delete it" you need to reformat your hard drive. it gets complicated because in order to install it you need to first partition your drive, which means you'll need to dick around with the other partitions before you can "delete it". it's safe, but you should know what you're doing before fucking around with things...also, installing it will erase all your data unless you back it up.
v.6 is the latest and u dont have to install other bs just install yellow dog v6.0 and you should be good to go...try installing fadora after u get the hang of linux
Linux does work better on PS3 when the apps are designed for the cell processor. Even Yellow Dog isn't fully cell BE optimized so it's slow as shit sometimes. And 256 MB of RAM isn't much to work with either. I'd rather see linux on the 360 which has an x86 processor if I'm not mistaken. And 512 MB of ram.
Linux isn't really that interesting to the PS fanboys out there until the RSX is unlocked. Then it's something to brag about.

He mentioned that it doesn't use the Nvidia card. But if you are smart enough to run sabayon linux on your PS3 it does use the Nvidia. meaning you can play all your linux compataple computer games on your PS3.

Linux is an open source OS that is able to run on almost any console. There is a specially designed version for PS3 known as "Yellow Dog Linux", basically it makes your PS3 a fast home computer along with a game console. Linux is also available on Mac and PC just in case you don't like the OS you're currently using.
Linux is an Operation System as Windows. This means that Linux will expand the use of the PS3 to something more than games and/or play MP3s.
Since Linux is Open Source, you can modify it, copy it, but not selling it.
Also, Linux let you install around 200 programs of any kind (which also are open source) so you can adapt your computer or console (in this case) to your needs or interests.

It has a single core processor (1 core, not 9) with 8 SPU's, one is not in use and another one is reserved for the OS.
6 of the SPU's are used in-game.
If i were you, i'd stop trusting the source of information you have.
And no, the PS3 cannot "outrun" newer computers. As a matter of fact, it never could.
Anyways, it's a good gaming device if you're on a budget, or want something simple.

I checked the Official Playstation 3 specifications on Sony's websites.
You can't really do anything special (except for using that Raytracer IBM made) in Linux, due to the GPU being blocked out of Linux.

1 - It's incredibly slow at times.

4 - Don't even think about playing games requiring a GPU.
5 - I've done this myself, but i figured out my laptop was better at being a computer than my PS3. (My PS3 is for games now)

Hi I have yellow dog linux and it's very good.. I've got wifi going on mine and I can play divx videos etc etc.... One thing on this video he has a black box in the background telling him what the cpu is doing "geek orenited" part of this video..

Well be a good boy and u`ll be rewarded, I was a piece of shit, but when they offered me the ps3, i became one of the best in my class, also in my country (venezuela) a ps3 is a DISTANT dream, because its too expensive 2700$ o 5.400.000 bs and 2150 bs are 1$, soooo i was VERY lucky, the inflation here is toooo high :D

He mentioned that it doesn't use the Nvidia card. But if you are smart enough to run sabayon linux on your PS3 it does use the Nvidia. meaning you can play all your linux compataple computer games on your PS3.

There is a anitvirus made for the ps3. Just go online and click file, settings and you can get some type of antivirus

yeah its called Trend Micro Internet Security for PS3 but i'm pretty sure that you can only use it for the ps3 operating system.

This is very strong move of Sony. I hate to admit it but the PS3 beats the Xbox 360 with this. I stil don't understand why microsoft hasn't even release a web browser yet. This just too cool for words.

The reason they didn't release a web browser is because Microsoft doesn't want the Xbox 360 to be a computer they want it to be a Gaming Console.

That is kinda dumb if you ask me. That is THE thing Microsoft beats every company at, and they leave those options out.
I think it would sell beter if they released a Xbox version of Windows for the Xbox. They don't have to make it super special, but they could at least give us the basic options like an normal Desktop, and the browser ofcours that would improof the mapping system 2.

linux suck,the os is hard to operate,i had it on my ps3 i delete it,the thing that pissed it me off,is that the browser doesnt come with java,you have to break your head to fix that out,it just sucks.windows is way better.

i have tryed to install YDL 3 times but its still not working ...i get the iso image on to it and it instals then i have to type the command in but the command that the site gives u is wrong :| ...it keeps sayin that it cant be found i am so pissed off :|

Sony Entertaiment releases bit by bit useless pieces of "Updates". It is a shame that such of excellent gaming Console has to confort with little performance. I would like to converse to all PS3 user interested on Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3 to contact Sony Playstation Customer Department and request Yellow Dog Linux, so if they receive overwhelming requests then we all will be benefit of. (the contact phone numbers and emails are in the documentation manuals)

jesus christ, i found out about linux about 4-5 years ago at 11 years of age and i messed around with it untill last year, im now happy to say i use linux for everything, although it kills me to say i have to boot into windows every now and again to play counter strike source.....:(

Linux is an open source OS that is able to run on almost any console. There is a specially designed version for PS3 known as "Yellow Dog Linux", basically it makes your PS3 a fast home computer along with a game console. Linux is also available on Mac and PC just in case you don't like the OS you're currently using.

Linux is an Operation System as Windows. This means that Linux will expand the use of the PS3 to something more than games and/or play MP3s.
Since Linux is Open Source, you can modify it, copy it, but not selling it.
Also, Linux let you install around 200 programs of any kind (which also are open source) so you can adapt your computer or console (in this case) to your needs or interests.
