  • why is the keyboard tuned down almost an entire half step?

  • very nice

  • Simply stunning sends shivers down my spine when I here this

  • jesus, that motherfucker can play!

  • holy shit! grandpa's got skills!!! XD your are awesomeeee!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the comment. Negative responses don't bother me. If someone says to do it this way or that way, I say "Show me".

  • I am about to blow a gasket regarding people on YouTube that just have to give these phony, wannabe, 'know it all' comments no matter what the video is. We really need an American purge. Beautiful video.

  • @socialistcontainment amen. Those people even lack the self respect to withhold criticism of even the best players in the world. I have seen comments saying that Glenn Goulds play was static or that Richters trillers were too long. Its amazing how arrogant people can be.

  • Thank you for your positive comments and interesting observation about how playing this piece does not look difficult to perform. This piece was extremely difficult for me to play and the simplicity of its execution is deceptive. In fact, I did not post the Fugue because of the difficulty. If i ever get the nerve, I will perform the entire piece and post it. It is a wonderful piece and i get a great deal of joy each and every time i play it. . Bach was the best !!!!

  • Brilliant. Surprised though, it doesn't look as difficult to play as it sounds. Thanks for posting this!

  • Captain Nemo theme... I LOVE Captain Nemo!

  • @jkthemod it's actually bach's tocatta and fugue.... in case you don't know

  • If you are in Anaheim California, at Disneyland - The grand ballroom in the "haunted mansion" is behind a very large pane of glass. There are reflections in the glass of mannequins dancing. The organ at the side of the room with skulls appearing from it is the same one pantomimed by James Mason in "20,000 leagues under the sea". -This piece is also featured in the 1960 movie "La Dolce Vita"

  • its only have this sound on a really really big orgel ;)

  • BRILLIANT!

  • it's a shame that the sound couldn't have been better. i'm sure the live sound is phenomenal. i always admired the power and sound of pipe organs. they're beautiful when they're played at their full potential.

  • Pretty good version, I think! I could see Captain Nemo clearly! Thanks

  • Like the socks +1

but why do people keep playing it differently from how I interpretate the score?

  • Thank you for this. My uncle would play this for me when I was young. You do it beautifully.

  • This instrument was clearly designed by a man with 10 hands.

  • @mapple23

Huge organs are no more difficult to play tham small ones. All keyboards can be "coupled" to the one you are playing on. I know, I have played the largest organ in the world, with seven keyboards. It is just as easy as one keyboard.

  • It seems to me the tuning is rather off compared to most other videos and my keyboard.

  • @dbosh09

This organ is so big that the sound from the most distant chamber reaches the microphone later than the closest pipes so it sounds out of tune. Huge organs offer a new excitement in sonic experience. Nothing is perfect. Enjoy.

  • One cannot play BACH in underwear !!!

  • @TheAaronmoses I appreciate your formal and conservative approach to perforing organ works. I was "playing around" with recording when I did this . My apology. I did record this same piece on the world's largest organ in Atlantic City ( 7 manuals and 1250 stops) dressed in a tuxedo ( for the cameras) but it is only available on DVD by purchase. I would hope that you share the interest and pleasure of the new technology (Youtube and Hauptwerk) with some restraint. Bach deserves better !!!

  • Agreed. I always take mine off first.

  • @TheAaronmoses of course yes ! Music is not a question of underwear but emotion. And there is emotion here.

  • Oh ! Thanks for this video ! amazing point of vue ! Too bad you did not play the fuga after the toccata ! ^^ Pleaaaaase !

  • well i for one think that you did very well on this video, of course I just love this song.

  • Superb job, keep up the good work!

  • i find it most amusing the way you use your wrist to trill at 1:18 when you could use your fingers and do it much faster.

  • If that is the only thing you can find to comment on you are a sad person. I see one person commented on the fact that I didn't wear shoes. Did you also notice the scratch on my right hand and the fact that the camera is crooked and the keys are missing on the top keyboard ?

  • as for the shoes, i dislike playing with shoes, but yes i did notice all the above.

i was just saying it as a pointer, it is faster and sounds better

  • -_- camera lagg

  • WOW.. we are doing this for a project at school.. your more amazing than our teacher!!

  • well, that was awesome. Keep it up.

  • Quite time that is...

  • you've no matter how to handle sound on pc for good quality

  • thats a sh*tload of keys! XD

  • I would not like to live next door to you! But apart from that, nice one!

  • Don't worry, I live out in the country, in the middle of no-where. Noise is not an issue.

My audio system is very small, but with a huge dynamic range. The organ sounds huge. Most times, I listen through AKG 701 headphones ( absolutely the best) because the dynamic range is even better than speakers.

  • I would. That would be awesome...We would would have family time while this guy is playing. =)

  • This is great! What keyboards are you using, and foot pedals?

  • The keyboards are from Classic Midi in Canada. The pedals were from a previous organ that I incorporated into the new one.

  • 5 stars and a standing ovation!

  • Of course on the movie "20,000 leagues under the sea" captain Nemo didn't play it. If you look at his hand movements are off. He goes down on the keyboard when the song is scaling up. Nice playing by the way.

  • I am aware that james mason wasn't playing. It was this movie, and this piece, that inspired my lifelong passion with the organ.

  • You do an nice job playing!

  • hey man that was great. where r u playing tho. r u playin the organ in a church or ur house or where. and how hav u practiced fo 45 years if u dont hav a organ at home

  • This organ is in my house ( in my basement) and it plays through my computer. It sounds like it is in a huge cathedarl because the organ is by Hauptwerk. Hauptwerk is an amazing computer software where you can play organs ( at least 50) that were recorded by samples. Each pipe of an organ is recorded, one at a time ( this organ has over 3000 separate recordings). It is playable by using ANY midi keyboard. I just happened to use 3 keyboards ( plus the pedal) because the organ has 3 keyboards.

  • that organ sounds kickass!

  • the best one i've seen, by far.

the timing is perfect! great job.

  • amazing!!

  • This is the best performance I've found on YouTube yet. Thank you for sharing your talent with us! :)

  • I am 54 years old and I wish I could play toccota since I was 8 years old I played piano for two years between 7 t09 years old

& I tried hard but I could not do it perfect

ENJOY TO LISTEN AND PLAY TOCCOTA

WHO ANY BODY CAN IT IS THE BEST MUSIC

  • That's hella awesome!

  • i'm playing organ in our church choir i'm using the electone,i have only one problem, i don't know how to read notes but i know the sound of each notes...i'm eager to play this instrument..we have a bamboo pipe organ here in our country

  • I am a very slow reader of music. Hymns are very difficult because they are four vertical notes at the same time. Most of Bach rarely uses four notes at a time.

I would suggest that you get some very simple music with large notes ( easier to read) to start. Beginner piano music for young children is a good start. The more difficult music always has the notes so close together that it is difficult to read.Take the music and enlarge it on a copy machine to 150% to make it easy to read.

  • can i ask? how many years do you play the organ?and what are the do's and dont's for being an organist?

  • I have never taken organ lessons, only piano lessons for a few years. I have been playing the organ for about 45 years. I teach myself to play by listening, but I can read music.

If you are playing classical organ music ( i.e. manuals and pedals) I would recommend that you practice the manuals without the pedals first. Make sure you can play the manuals before you add the pedals. Start out at quarter speed and when you can play the piece with both manuals and pedals, then speed up.

  • Listen to this after listening to Toccata on a real organ, and you will hear the difference between 44.1khz and 48khz...

  • i'm from the philippines i'm 20 years od

  • I would love to hear Bach's 'Toccata and Fugue in D minor' played on the Wanamaker pipe organ in Philadelphia, PA, USA, the Midmer-Losh Boardwalk Hall pipe organ in Atlantic City, NJ, USA, the Sydney Town Hall pipe organ in Sydney, Australia, and Sydney's Opera House pipe organ in Sydney, Australia. Johannes Sabastian Bach would be cheering from heaven if his composition is played on the world's largest pipe organs.

  • Odd Can i also have a copy of the piece, im an ameteur pianist/organist

  • can ihve a copy of that pice?please i want to learn that i have an electone

  • If you give me your e-mail address I will send you a copy. Where are your from ? I am from Pennsylvania , USA.

    Antoni

  • i would like an organ like that

  • The hauptwerk software is about $250 and comes with a free organ. You can use any Midi keyboard and even a small computer. My organ on Youtube is big ( about 45 stops) and requires a huge computer RAM ( 16 gigabytes) but you can get away with 4 gigabytes.

  • wow. that's all I have to say. wow.

  • now the fugue :-D great playing

  • i think you might well have inspired me to dust of my bach manuscript. i have a roland d50 which has what i thought was definitive pipe organ sound, but what you've just showed me has just opened my eyes. :) thank you so much. i especially like the way you built your own pedals. now all i need is to convince the g/f to allow me to build this in the appartment. :)

  • ....I also really liked the straightforward way you played it . Reminded me of E. Power Biggs, and not trying to sound like a Dracula movie....

  • It was a treat to see how it is actually played. Thank you for posting this POV version!

  • Fantastisc job! I love this piece and I have listened to many versions, and yours stands up to some of the best sounding 'real' organs. really great work.

  • Thanks for the comments. But just to be clear, this is not a "real" organ, but a recorded version of a real one ( the Metz Cavaille-Coll in France, to be exact) . It was a digitally sampled organ ( using Hauptwerk software) that can allow you to use your computer to play it back. It is quite amazing. They record every single pipe, one at a time, in the church. I think this organ has over 5000 pipes. When I press a key it actually brings up the recorded pipe instantly. I have 10 other organs.

  • Actually, it s not a model at all. The organ software is by Hauptwerk and there are dozens of organs to choose from. The three keyboards were obtained from Classic Midi in Canada. The pedalboard was from an old pipe organ.

You load an organ into your computer and play from any MIDI keyboard. I have three keyboards, some have two or even one. The sound is the same. Quite phenomenal actually.

  • what is the model of your organ?

  • Geil

  • The pedals came from a real church pipe organ that I added MIDI contacts to, to make it work with my MIDI keyboards.

  • I love this piece great job!!! Where did u get the foot pedals for the organ ???

  • The video was done with my daughter's little "Flip" video camera which is the size of a pack of cigarettes. It was very inexpensive and it has a tiny microphone in it. That's all I used. I suspended it above the console on a stick. Very crude.

  • Great system and execution! Just curious - how did you record the sound for this youtube clip? Surely it wasn't the camera mic? =D

  • Wow, the sound is amazing!

My music teacher played organ in church, it was a n ancient one, supposedly good, she said that the types were hard. But it didn't sound anything like this.

Does this make an echo as well aor you are in a large room?

  • Youtube only has an eight minute length allowed to be posted. The Fugue is over five minutes long, the Toccata over three minutes. I wasn't sure it would make it. I thought it odd to post two separate pieces. But I see others have.

I will try to do both shortly.

  • Why just the intro ? :(

    Nice video.

  • Hi ShandyHall:

I live in a very remote area of Pennsylvania so it may be difficult for you to see it. I purchased three keyboards from Classic Midi in Canada and employed MIlan build me my computer since I couldn't possibly do it myself. You better be computer savy as there are millions of things that can go wrong, and do. Without the help of a very computer savy friend I'd be sunk. But when it works, the sound is phenomenal, by far the best I have ever heard, even for ten times as much money.

  • I would like to see your Hauptwerk set up if you get a chance. I am thinking of putting one together and would like to see how it is done.

    Thanks.

  • Very very very good! I loved it.

  • amazing:) good job

  • this is great, I love it when its played in 20,000 leagues under the sea. Vey good video and expert skill

  • Tubamax....

Tell me about your speaker setup... what brand, how many and placement. Thanks

    Pat

  • Very beautiful playing and excellent "top view" video.

  • why ?

  • Shoes please.

  • You cant typer a lot cant you my good sir.Any way that peice is wonderfull.

  • Jack:

Thank you for your comments. Where are you located ? How do you intend that I teach you the Toccata? Do you read music ? By the way, the piece is short so you can memorize it. Most of the runs are in parallel octaves. The Toccata in D-minor is an easy piece, but very impressive - Bach's finest composition. Interestingly, he composed it 300 years ago, this year in 1708.

  • Dear sir I have done many things in my life. I have piloted many aircraft. I can hit a target at 1000 yards and have many children. but what you do is Incredable. I would like to learn how to do that. Can you teach me?

  • Antoni...

Are you using an existing keyboard or one of the keyboard only type midi keyboards for your Hauptwerk? Phenomenal sound!

    Patrick

  • Hi Patrick:

I have a PreSonus eight channel output to send the pedals through one stereo amp, and the three manuals each through their own separate amp. Eight speakers in all. I didn't have the money to buy eight good speakers, they are mixed up. not good.

However, I am in agreement with those that know, that sending each manual and pedal through a separate amp and set of speakers really makes for realism.
