Unfortunately Hone Harawira doesn't have the voice of Sir Howard or we would be blessed with enjoying yet another remarkable era of modest and quality maori entertainment at it's finest.
I love this song I was taught it at itrmediate school choir and have sung as a lullaby to all my babies and now my grandson Sir howard does it justice for sure!!! Great to hear english version too.
Although one great New Zealander has fallen from our graces, we are blessed with the rise of yet another - Step forth and shine Hone Harawira, your time is now.
@dafecat how dear you put hone in the same league as beautiful sir howard. i am a european nzer and i love the maori however hone is a racist, fascist, extremist. sir howard is a legend. hone is sick in the head, so is his mum
Please could you leave this video on youtube as a memorial to this song and Howard. I remember the night he sang this song and it was very emotional to hear this song and i have looking for this film footage for ages. It was the last great sporting events that our country put on and he sang it so beautifully. Thank you for putting it on youtube.
Wow...Sir Howard's finest moment, IMO. Opening set the benchmark of evening openings for every other mass multisport games there after, including the Olympics. Barcelona pretty much ripped off most of this for the 1992 SOGs.
Weird someone mentioned Hone Harawira on comments. Hone disgraces the Harawira name. He does not speak for me and mine.

simply the best. I agree, this opening changed the way the olympics and commonwealth games were opened.

Special inspirational performance from Sir Howard. The whole performance from musos to the backing singers included was excellent.
