  • I had forgotten seeing this all those years ago on 'Masterpiece Theater"--re-watching Brett in "Sherlock Holmes" recently reminded me that he was in this adaption of "Rebecca". Of course I love the Hitchcock version, and it is a film classic, but so far this version is the usual high quality British literary adaption for tv. Comparing it to Hitch is a bit beside the point--compare it to the usual crap you see on TV! And I love Jeremy Brett in anything!

  • After seeing the original movie, this has to be the most shameful remake ever, i only needed to watch a couple of minutes to see that there is no feeling in this at all, totally not the same as watching Joan & Laurence, they made this film, no one could ever play the parts like they did. I'm not against remakes but this one seems shocking to me. i cant believe this has so many likes.

  • This is so pathetic. I get shut off on Rebecca, and get the remake. It sucks. You can never, never, remake a classic. There is but one Fontaine and one Olivier. It was beautiful. And brilliant. It never works. One of a kind. Dump this one,.

  • Is Joanna David mother of actress Emilia Fox

  • Poor spide, hehe. This is actually well-regarded as one of the best, if not the best, ever adaptation of Rebecca. Wonderful atmospheric studio sets, videotaping adds just the right kind of spooky mystery, it may have been for budget reasons but it's an added bonus way too many people brought up on American filmed TV shows fail to understand.

  • This is terrible....Hitch was perfect. I'm ashamed for the actors. It looks and sounds like a local community college production.

  • @spide429 You are so right. They sell the original Rebecca for $ 75 per dvd. and give us this one free. Fontaine was born for Rebecca.

  • I miss Jeremy Brett- for those who don't know he was also Eliza Dolittle's suitor Freddie, in the Audrey Hepburn/Rex Harrison "My Fair Lady"- he sang "On the Street Where You Live"-

  • this is so much worse

  • Hey, everyone!

    Quicky question!

I read somewhere that David Huggins had a small part in this series, playing alongside his parents. Is that true? And if so, what does he play? And which episode?

  • @MrsDelle When Beatrice Lacy drove Mrs. Winter to visit Maxim's grandmother, she nearly ran over a young man, played by David Huggins. I don't remember what episode.

  • @gulshabbo Thank you! :D Must be episode three, then, I think. :) Thanks.

  • jeremy is not as off putting as dance. he is certainly coming accross as more sympathetic..

  • I remember watching this when it first came out on the BBC and I was utterly captivated. Joanna David is without doubt the definitive girl - Joan Fontaine is so weak in comparison - and the later Anna Massey quite wonderful as the definitive Mrs Danvers, with Jeremy Brett so much better than the strangely wooden Laurence Olivier. Indeed, all those in the supporting roles are just so damned good.

Heresy, but the Hitchcock film has nothing on this piece of classic television. Thanks for uploading.

  • My favorite adaptation of the book...Thanks for posting it. I have wanted to see it again for years....

  • The guy who plays Maxim reminds me of the actor who played Snape in Harry Potter. When I read it, I pictured Maxim sounding just like that. I liked the 40s version, but Maxim seemed too nice in that version, where in the book he was kind of a sarcastic smart alik. This version got that spot on.

  • That's the worst American accent in the history of ever, but I guess it fits the obnoxious Mrs. Van Hopper.

  • @bluegrassbaby86 I suggest you find the Faye Dunnaway version of Mrs Van Hopper, with a proper American accent and over-acting to much you cringe.

  • hmm dunno why but recently I think Maxim and the girl from Rebecca resemble a bit of Mr Rochester & Jane in Jane Eyre

  • I agree with you that BBC would do us all a huge favor by releasing this on DVD. It's a wonderful production. Does justice to Daphne's Du Maurier's incredible novel.

  • i want to see anna massey in this. it must be near perfect casting. thank you.

  • I've literally just finished reading the book and thought it was one of the best I've ever read! I started watching the Hitchcock version which is also on Youtube, but I found it a little too over-the-top for my liking. This version seems much better, it looks like it's actually taking its time to tell the story. And this opening monologue is much more refined than the melodramatic voiceover in the other film, which for me doesn't at all capture the solemn, quiet atmosphere of the dream.

  • Jonna David is so much better than Fontaine for this role.

I must have read the book wrong, because in the Movies de Winter is a bit of a jerk ass.

Also, thanks for posting this. This is my favorite version

  • I haven't seen this version of REBECCA in years and have been looking for it for a long time. Thanks for posting!

  • amazing book!

  • Such a shame, what you say - that it has never been released on DVD, 'cause I'd so much love have it! How did you get a hold on it, then? Please let us know! :D

  • @MrsDelle Yes, it is a shame. I believe It's a tv record. I downloaded it somewhere, can't remember where exactly.

  • @MrsDelle I have looked for this for years!! Best Rebecca ever IMO. Certainly best Maxim and Mrs Danvers. Thank you so so much. My weekend is now organised!

  • Thank you so much for the chance to see this brilliant series. All the cast are great and Jeremy Brett is a superb Max de Winter. The music is quite fantastic, does anyone know the title music, or any of the other pieces? I don't know classical music and only know Debussy's Reverie because I read it somewhere. Fantastic.

  • the unnamed protagonist here is just as I imagined her! I love the Hitchcock version, but Joan Fontaine is way too pretty. Though thats just my opinion :-)

  • Hmm I'm curious, in the old days, once a man confessed his love to a gal, it would always be a marriage proposal rather then just a date ;)

  • I love new Mrs. Der Winter in 40's version more, i love her stunning look, it's cute. But this is more like in the book.

  • @Hanraoi how do you download it? I didn't know you could from youtube. I'd love to be able to keep this version. It's definitely one of the best!

  • @albelle25 .Copies appear rather regularly on e-bay

  • I agree its the best version thank you so much for downloading cant wait to show my sister.

  • @Hanraoi

I have read and re-read the novel many times since I first picked it up when I was 13, and to me this is the best version yet. Jeremy Brett is one of my favorite British actors. In the novel, the unnamed girl who marries Mr.De Winter was 21 and he was 42.

  • ... this looks terrible. next version then.

  • @genericusername337 u got that right the 1940 version is the best

  • Great, I love J. Brett's work and it is hard to find.

  • Thanks so very much for posting this!! Those of us here in the U.S can't buy it from the U.S Amazon.com at all, and we couldn't even view it!! Thanks again a thousand times!!

  • i HATE this version. the new mes. de winter is WAYY older than she is supposed to be. the older one is a BILLION x better

  • Funny that the 2nd Mrs de Winter was played by this actresses own daughter in the 1997 version!=)

  • @Hanraoi how to download though? totally agree about bretts awesomeness x

  • I've always loved this version. Haven't seen it in years. Thank you so much for posting this!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this version of Rebecca to Youtube. It is my opinion that it is the very best of an extremely good bunch of versions of this classic novel, and I cannot understand why it has never had a proper, commercial release on DVD. Jeremy Brett as Maxim de Winter was perfect. How lovely to see this here.

  • Stumbled upon this by pure unadulterated chance. You made my month (at least). Thank you kindly!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful version, much apreciated!

Why, why, WHY there's no DVD to buy????????

  • Fantastic. Why in heaven's name is this not released again?Thank you!

  • Thanks for posting this. My poor old VHS tape is just about worn out. One of my favorite Brett performances.

  • YES! thank you for this! so much.

  • Bonjour.

  • How wonderful of you to upload this version. I remember watching this as a kid when it came out. I had just finished reading the book and it really brought all the characters to life for me.

  • This is better than the original with Lawrence Olivier. I adored Jeremy Brett. Thanks so much for posting this~

  • I saw this on transmission in 1979. Only waited 30 years to see it again. Thank you so much.

  • Jeremy & Joanna were perfect for their roles - it was an extremely engrossing movie to watch.

    Thanks so much!

  • The best version of Rebecca which I have seen. i first saw this on my local PBS station during the early 1980`s. Thank You for sharing with Us. Lorraine

  • Don't know where you found this, but thank you!

  • There is no Rebecca appearance!

  • Thank you so much for this. I found Jeremy Brett because of this TV version of Rebecca.

  • Thank you thank you thank you very much indeed for this good work!

  • Thanks so much for uploading it! I've been loking for it for ages because of Jeremy Brett's performance not to mention I love the book.

Can anyone tell me who plays Rebecca in this version or does she not appear?

  • So good to see this, the best of all versions. Thanks so much for uploading it.

  • Wow, the work you put into posting this. Thank you so much.

  • thanks for uploading this its always rare to see jeremy brett in anything

  • This is the best version of Rebecca. I saw it the only time it was shown on the BBC.

It is very true to the book and in my opinion, beats the film version hands down.

  • You have my gratitude for posting the best version of Rebecca!

  • Is Firefox good? I have been having a lot of problems at Justin TV and was told to get firefox. As to the actors in this version, I think they were both perfect for the part, when JD daughter went on to play the same part in the CD version she was too pretty and By far not wimpy enough.

  • I think the reason this version is better than the other 2 you mentioned is it stays true to the book far more with only a few changes.

  • JB fans: if you want to download the clips here, just use a little program called YouTube Downloader. Easy to use and free.

Or visit The Box and get it there from my upload.

  • I have upped the entire 4-part series on the free torrent site The Box a while ago, so if anyone wants to download ithe whole thing for free, you can find it there. I didn't know how to put it up here but I'm glad someone did! :-)

It's never been released on dvd, but there are vhs home copies around. That's where my upload came from (hence the not so good quality).

  • Thank you SO much for posting this. Wow! Now...how does one go about downloading it? Thank you so much, Filo

  • Thanks for posting this!!! I have been wanting to see this for YEARS
