I had forgotten seeing this all those years ago on 'Masterpiece Theater"--re-watching Brett in "Sherlock Holmes" recently reminded me that he was in this adaption of "Rebecca". Of course I love the Hitchcock version, and it is a film classic, but so far this version is the usual high quality British literary adaption for tv. Comparing it to Hitch is a bit beside the point--compare it to the usual crap you see on TV! And I love Jeremy Brett in anything!
After seeing the original movie, this has to be the most shameful remake ever, i only needed to watch a couple of minutes to see that there is no feeling in this at all, totally not the same as watching Joan & Laurence, they made this film, no one could ever play the parts like they did. I'm not against remakes but this one seems shocking to me. i cant believe this has so many likes.
This is so pathetic. I get shut off on Rebecca, and get the remake. It sucks. You can never, never, remake a classic. There is but one Fontaine and one Olivier. It was beautiful. And brilliant. It never works. One of a kind. Dump this one,.
I watched this on pbs mystery in 1980. I was in college and lived w/ my boyfriend. He'd have his 20 year old friends over to drink beer & play cards several nights each week. They saw me watching this. By the second episode all these young, football-only TV watching guys, along with my boyfriend, had abandoned their partying to watch Rebecca with me. On the night of the last episode we had a full-house, not one of them wanted to miss PBS mystery and find out what happened to Rebecca & Maxim.
Poor spide, hehe. This is actually well-regarded as one of the best, if not the best, ever adaptation of Rebecca. Wonderful atmospheric studio sets, videotaping adds just the right kind of spooky mystery, it may have been for budget reasons but it's an added bonus way too many people brought up on American filmed TV shows fail to understand.
I miss Jeremy Brett- for those who don't know he was also Eliza Dolittle's suitor Freddie, in the Audrey Hepburn/Rex Harrison "My Fair Lady"- he sang "On the Street Where You Live"-
I read somewhere that David Huggins had a small part in this series, playing alongside his parents. Is that true? And if so, what does he play? And which episode?
@MrsDelle When Beatrice Lacy drove Mrs. Winter to visit Maxim's grandmother, she nearly ran over a young man, played by David Huggins. I don't remember what episode.
I remember watching this when it first came out on the BBC and I was utterly captivated. Joanna David is without doubt the definitive girl - Joan Fontaine is so weak in comparison - and the later Anna Massey quite wonderful as the definitive Mrs Danvers, with Jeremy Brett so much better than the strangely wooden Laurence Olivier. Indeed, all those in the supporting roles are just so damned good.
Heresy, but the Hitchcock film has nothing on this piece of classic television. Thanks for uploading.
The guy who plays Maxim reminds me of the actor who played Snape in Harry Potter. When I read it, I pictured Maxim sounding just like that. I liked the 40s version, but Maxim seemed too nice in that version, where in the book he was kind of a sarcastic smart alik. This version got that spot on.
I agree with you that BBC would do us all a huge favor by releasing this on DVD. It's a wonderful production. Does justice to Daphne's Du Maurier's incredible novel.
I've literally just finished reading the book and thought it was one of the best I've ever read! I started watching the Hitchcock version which is also on Youtube, but I found it a little too over-the-top for my liking. This version seems much better, it looks like it's actually taking its time to tell the story. And this opening monologue is much more refined than the melodramatic voiceover in the other film, which for me doesn't at all capture the solemn, quiet atmosphere of the dream.
Such a shame, what you say - that it has never been released on DVD, 'cause I'd so much love have it! How did you get a hold on it, then? Please let us know! :D
@MrsDelle I have looked for this for years!! Best Rebecca ever IMO. Certainly best Maxim and Mrs Danvers. Thank you so so much. My weekend is now organised!
Thank you so much for the chance to see this brilliant series. All the cast are great and Jeremy Brett is a superb Max de Winter. The music is quite fantastic, does anyone know the title music, or any of the other pieces? I don't know classical music and only know Debussy's Reverie because I read it somewhere. Fantastic.
the unnamed protagonist here is just as I imagined her! I love the Hitchcock version, but Joan Fontaine is way too pretty. Though thats just my opinion :-)
I have read and re-read the novel many times since I first picked it up when I was 13, and to me this is the best version yet. Jeremy Brett is one of my favorite British actors. In the novel, the unnamed girl who marries Mr.De Winter was 21 and he was 42.
Thanks so very much for posting this!! Those of us here in the U.S can't buy it from the U.S Amazon.com at all, and we couldn't even view it!! Thanks again a thousand times!!
Thank you so much for uploading this version of Rebecca to Youtube. It is my opinion that it is the very best of an extremely good bunch of versions of this classic novel, and I cannot understand why it has never had a proper, commercial release on DVD. Jeremy Brett as Maxim de Winter was perfect. How lovely to see this here.
Bonjour. Je cherche la version française de ce feuilleton, en DVD et VHS. Pourriez-vous me dire où je puis la trouver ? J'ai beaucoup aimé cette adaptation du roman de Daphné du Maurier. D'avance merci d'une réponse. Cordialement
How wonderful of you to upload this version. I remember watching this as a kid when it came out. I had just finished reading the book and it really brought all the characters to life for me.
The best version of Rebecca which I have seen. i first saw this on my local PBS station during the early 1980`s. Thank You for sharing with Us. Lorraine
Is Firefox good? I have been having a lot of problems at Justin TV and was told to get firefox. As to the actors in this version, I think they were both perfect for the part, when JD daughter went on to play the same part in the CD version she was too pretty and By far not wimpy enough.
I have upped the entire 4-part series on the free torrent site The Box a while ago, so if anyone wants to download ithe whole thing for free, you can find it there. I didn't know how to put it up here but I'm glad someone did! :-)
It's never been released on dvd, but there are vhs home copies around. That's where my upload came from (hence the not so good quality).

This is terrible....Hitch was perfect. I'm ashamed for the actors. It looks and sounds like a local community college production.

@spide429 You are so right. They sell the original Rebecca for $ 75 per dvd. and give us this one free. Fontaine was born for Rebecca.

That's the worst American accent in the history of ever, but I guess it fits the obnoxious Mrs. Van Hopper.

@bluegrassbaby86 Mrs. Van Hopper's American accent is not quite right.

@bluegrassbaby86 I suggest you find the Faye Dunnaway version of Mrs Van Hopper, with a proper American accent and over-acting to much you cringe.
