I believe that the reason that there aren't many black tech entrepreneurs is that many African-American kids don't grow up with the same level of access to new technologies that white and Asian children do. There also isn't the cultural interest. African-American culture still focuses on arts and athletics, and neglects the sciences.
I am black, and these "Black in America" series she does are horrendous, there is no singular mindset when it comes to African Americans, PERIOD. Stop with the "woe is me" attutude. And newflash Soledad, there are plenty of Asian and Indian Americans in Silicone Valley who are successful, so it has diversity..
Her view is narrowminded and his last sentence is the truest statement you can make
@2phillyjay2 ....what do you mean "woe is me"....so acknowledging institutional and overt biases is a woe is me attitude now? Is what people say about socially constructed discrimination in this country somehow untrue? If not, why are you trying to shame blacks from voicing their opinions on racism? People often conflate acknowledging racism, with some sort of acceptance of inferiority, which is blatantly manipulative.
@flipgood89 "acknowledging institutional and overt biases is a woe is me attitude now?" Excuse me but you have to PROVE the bias instead of assuming it because the numbers are not of your liking. "Shame blacks?", No shame in stating obvious racism IF it exists but making the assumption absent of reason is reckless. And i see you avoided the rest of my comment, Plenty of diversity with other races non white, Oh i guess that doesn't count if blacks are absent? of course it does.
@2phillyjay2 ....LOL, so racism and the biases it generates in areas of the judicial, education, hiring and firing,, etc are now "assumptions", huh? Lol. Good one. Hmm....whats this "plenty of diversity" you speak of when it comes to other races, and in what sectors of society are they represented at?
@flipgood89 Too easy, first off stick to the subject (the video above is what I'm commenting on), not enough space to address the other broad issues you speak of. my "plenty of diversity" i speak of.... how's this, Silicone Valley, tech hub of the America.
35% white
32% asian
28% hispanic
less than 3% black..... (US Census Bureau). men lie, women lie, numbers don't
@2phillyjay2 ....lol. So "hispanics" make up about 30% of the work force in "Silicone" valley, huh? LOL. Wow, how interesting. I guess you learn something new everyday. Let me ask, where exactly did you get those numbers within the census bureau? The dept. of labor would like to have a word with your statistics.
@flipgood89 didn't say workforce, population period. Point being that being an "entrepreneur", successfully, requires a knack and will all your own. Plenty of black, hispanic, and asian "entrepreneurs" with individual drive and perseverance, REGARDLESS OF RACE, the group think mentality is stifling. Why wait to be part of a "workforce" and create a niche and job of your own. read what i wrote before commenting.
@2phillyjay2 ..I think you need to read what you write. You started off strongly insinuating that racism is an "assumption" or black self-victimization device that has no merit. When I challenged you, your response was to post a vague statistic about the lack of black representation in "silicone" valley. U positioned the statistic as an implication that underperformance is unique to only Blacks and there is something deficient in our race only. Now u claim, race doesnt matter. Ur confused.
@flipgood89 The only confusion is in your thought process. Newsflash, diversity is not exclusive to just blacks. Second, "vague statistic"?, citing the population of the area illustrates the mix in the region. READ WHAT I WROTE., I said her "Black in America" series and "her" assumption of racism with no merit. You in your response introduce overarching themes I didn't even mention with my comment. Once again your misguided insinuation, "under performance" (never said),"deficient"(never implied)
@2phillyjay2 ....uh, yeah. Whatever. Listen, I used to live in the San Jose/Silicon valley area....I went to Lincoln High school and Hoover middle school....There is a considerable Hispanic population in that surrounding area, but they are all pretty much lower to middle class at best, and many are below the poverty line. See, posting statistics that are context-free and misleading is about as irresponsible as it gets. Your stats actually disproved whatever point u were trying to make.
@flipgood89 So intelligence and creativity is confined to a class group? Negative. Some of the best and brightest of us have persevered despite challenges because the adversity makes you stronger. The statistic is very valid. Fact is Silicone Valley is there for the taking if you apply yourself. I noticed your bio, i figured your familar with the area. I also know from experience what is possible...
@2phillyjay2 ...it does a disservice to social and economic realities, when you dismiss patterns as "woe is me attitude". All numbers point to an economic system that is not a meritocracy, but more of an aristocracy, where resources are distributed and allocated amongst an increasingly smaller subset of American individuals. Acknowledging that is not "woe is me", but more a challenge of our superstructures. You cant expect many underprivileged people to succeed in a rigged system.
@flipgood89 I'm living proof that both are far from the case. Once again, address the issue of my initial comment.... "challenge me"? funny, you couldn't keep up on your best day with me at my worst.
This dumb wannabe black reporter needs to be fired immediately!!!!!!!

@papavalium ....MLK never said anything about accepting racism, and not fighting for equality. Thats what he died for....so get his name out of your mouth if you are going to pervert the mans words and vision.
