@jackpipsam I think it's more the issue that gay men are/were often stereotyped as mommas' boys. "Devoted to their mothers" as Brad Allen/Rex Stetson would say. It is/was a very popular, Freudian-esque stereotype that saturates Psycho. Not to mention, Hollywood's version of homosexuality is often paired with mental illness as if they go hand in hand. Repressed gay-ness is an instant recipe for "homicidal nutcase," if movies are to be believed.
Seriously I find it weird. All the characters mentionned here are NEVER clearly said to be gay (in Psychose, the Psychanalist even denies Norman Bate being gay), they are just acting in way that can be interpreted as gay... if you follow stereotype. Does this mean stereotypes are real ? That seems kinda silly...
@Theokal3 Well, you still associate those behaviors with the stereotypical homosexual, don't you? It's pretty much just saying a man is weird, evil and not right if he is acting in anyway like a "woman" e.g. wearing dresses, makeup, liking men, etc. and vice versa (a woman being "manly"). It doesn't matter if it's directly making gay men and women evil, it's making anything that is not in the typical gender associated traits evil. You get what I mean?
@iheartjackieyes I guess I do... excuse me. I just find those stereotypes annoying cause I don't feel like characters with effeminate behaviours are necessarly gay, and because I do have a gay friend, who is not different than anyone in his mannerism.
@Theokal3 It's alright. I understand. I wasn't trying to make you feel anything negative; in fact, I agree with you. It just happens that I have a friend that is, well, more or less the stereotypical gay man. Does that make him less manly or effeminate? No, it doesn't. It doesn't make him other than a guy, who enjoys to crochet and make these really awesome grenadine drinks while having sex with his boyfriend. You know, gay. There's nothing "feminine" about being gay guy, you know?
Congrats, you´ve made a really good video, I watched the lion king not so much ago and it appeared to me quite strange how Mufasa assembles a woman, or in this case he may be gay, right on people, as for me this is quality information. Sorry about the bad english, greetings from Mexico.
@piecharthosen Well he never was specifically identified as gay. He was just strange, creepy, and English... which when you put them together make up a shallow stereotype for a gay man.
@piecharthosen of course when you think about it like that then by those standards Captain Jack Sparrow is gay too. He wears makeup, he's brightly decorated, and he gestures with everything he says.
I think this is a clear example of looking too much into it or trying too hard to complain about something.
The villains are effeminate, not all gay males are effeminate, in fact they try to erase the stereotype. I'd say that these villains are metrosexual, not gay. And there's nothing wrong with a villain being gay unless his or her homosexuality is portrayed as the root of their evil.
Also, about Xerxes, the jewelry is part of Persian tradition symbolizing power.
As for the part about heroes not being gay we have to take a closer look at characters themselves. Our most obvious example is Agent Smecker from the Boondock saints, who although quite obviously gay, doe not act in a completely effeminate manner. If we look at action heroes no male or female has any, shall we say "dainty" traits. Yet that doesn't rule out gays, some are quite masculine. So any movie without a current love interest could have a gay hero, just not a delicate gay hero.
So I count ten gay villains (one of the Disney characters wasn't a villain & the only one who is truly effeminate & a villain was Jafar). So here are ten definitely straight villains 1) Darth Vader 2) Leatherface 3) Simon Phoenix (Demolition man) 4) McLeach (Rescuers Down Under) 5) Bluto (Popeye) 6 Ivan Drago (Rocky IV) 7) John Herod (The Quick & the Dead) 8) Jack Wilson (Shane) 9) Waco Johnny Dean (Winchester '73) 10) Alonzo Harris (Training Day) More gay & straight Villains can be found.
I understand you concentrate a lot on male homosexuals (since you are male too) but it would be great if you also talked more about lesbians. They as well have been villanized throughout hollywoods film history.
OMG! The ending was so great! Especially if you get it. All three of three of the men shown (Eddie, travolta, and Tom) are all known to play the macho guy in films. When for years it has been buzzing around that all 3 are gay. Ha, oh the irony.
OK, as much as I like this show and I have nothing against gay people, but this is just wrong. Being Feminine and being gay are two different things. I am a TOTALLY heterosexual guy, yet I care about my looks, use makeup, color my nails and i have a soft voice and can act playful sometimes. And even if I am not homophobic, I still don't like people calling me what I am not, because people think I'm gay. It would help if gay people would help stop these stereotypes and not strengthen them...
@KainSlash I don't think it's fair to say that gay people are strengthening the stereotype. Some men do everything you mentioned you do and are GAY and some do none of the things you do and aren't gay. It's not gay people that need to stop stereotyping it's the media and people in general. No one should put a label on someones sexuality because of the things they do and enjoy. That's the real problem people like jumping to conclusions on others sexuality based solely on activities and mannerisms
@bruinreuben A faggot is a pile of sticks.... and to be honest, if you wana be afraid of a pile of sticks thats all good. but not all of us have that fear. Unto each his own ^^
i enjoy how tom cruise's promo photo for top gun was the totally heterosexual example... or did you not notice the sparks flying between him in val kilmer during the volleyball scene?
Heh, heh, it's funny you flashed a pic of Tom Cruise in Top Gun at the end, considering how much homoerotic subtext there is in that movie.
Also, including Peter Lorre in the 'Maltese Falcon' is probably a wee little bit unfair - he was supposed to be gay (it's in the book that way) but the Hollywood Production Code wouldn't let them come out and say it, so it had to be hinted at with that business with the cane.
If "my diamond in the rough" isn't a comeon, I don't know what is.
And how is Bogart's character not fucking the French cop in "Casablanca" and Lorre in "The Maltese Falcon"? Listen to his voice in that clip. Tell me he doesn't want to get in his pants.

Reading way too much into this. I will only comment on what I absolutely know to be true: the presentation of Xerxes in "300" was 100% accurate as far as Greek sources are concerned. Persians in general were viewed by Greeks, especially Herodotus - the primary source for "300" - as effeminate, overly extravagant, despots. There's nothing "gay" about it, though Persian emperors did indeed have male concubines.
And the Spartans preferred to have their way with their fellow Spartan "soldiers," as then, they would have definite reason to die for one another! Another one of those pesky historical references some people do NOT wish to investigate. Sorry.
@dolfnmoon I don't doubt that, although I have not personally investigated that claim. What I am saying is that the "gay" presentation of Xerxes is a Greek thing, a perception, not necessarily historical fact.
About gay characters being portrayed as villains, maybe it has something to do with the straight male's primal fear of being violated (or being put into a passive/powerless situation and being hurt).
I've even heard some jokes (dont' get me wrong - that's true) about gays being very brave for letting others do you know what.
Well, I think that might also be a joke the portrayal of gay men as hypersensitive people who hunger desperately for intimacy with other men.
To be fair, Buffalo Bill was fairly representative of a real serial killer Ed Gein, who indeed killed two women, wanted to have a sex change operation (whether he was truly transsexual is up to debate as with Bill), and instead made a woman suit. I suppose he's still an artifact of a homophobic media, but he's definitely a terrible example to use...
"and totally heterosexual" and the Tom Cruise pops up...LOL If even a gay guy starts to think Tom Cruise is not exactly straight, that makes me think :-D
Don't let Tom Crusie see this he'll sue you! Because he is so "straight" that even if you crack a gay joke at him he has to make it clear that he loved the pussy......>_> like it is fooling us
OH, I have never forgiven Mel Gibsons for the way he portrayed Edward II in Braveheart. Now that everyone knows he's a psycho-Jesus-freak-nazi-wifebeater I feel justified.
another thing, the poiny of Xerxes was not to be a gay guy hitting on Leonidas, he was portrayed as a man who thought himself a god. His behavior was aimed at intimidating and awing people. I call moron on Safi for this one.
ok, normally I like what Safii says, but this time I thought he was just grasping at straws. Just because a person is foppish or cares about their appearance does not make them gay. That's ignorant and stupid. It's indulging in stereotypes by saying that all those are gay. The umbrella I can see as an attempt to be a phallic symbol, and buffalo bob was most likely gay. Diamonds are forever...ok I can see that. The talented mr. ripley, Id hit him too for talking to me that way
@TheAmicojoe bill, bob; whatever. I haven't seen the movie in like 7 years. And besides, it never flat out said he was gay (but the implications put it at like 99.9999999999999%). You missed the entire point of what I said. Were you just looking through old comments looking for people to troll at midnight? My point was that I think he was running out of good material and decided to use some material that required a little poetic license to execute the presentation.
...Sasuke... Orochimaru... Aizen-sama... Light... Hmm... judging by my geek experiences, not only does Hollywood make villains gay, but so do the Japanese.
On the other hand... of COURSE every villain is a gay. Imagine... Dark Helmet from Spaceballs and Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies. Okay, too easy? The Emperor from Star Wars seducing the Hitler from Inglorious Bastards. OMFG don't die on us, straighties.
@Narukashi666 japanese anime don't count as prejudice @.@ they can turn a villain gay because very often the main characters also are... Actually, they make whoever they want gay... That's because their public don't care about who's gay or who isn't... And often that same public think that anime gayness is cute.
And about every villain being gay... That's just paranoic... =/
@Liu484 I know, I was just pointing out how very often it happens. It's just something that gets on my nerves when it's blasted everywhere.
Cha, just imagine every villain as gay. That's what I meant. Sorry if it's not clear. It's a lot more hilarious when you think of the obviously too-evil-to-give-a-crap suddenly dropping their evil schemes because their boyfriend/girlfriend wanted to go hang out at a gay bar. :D
@Liu484 Japan is actually more homophobic than the US. They have this weird thing that if it's fiction, it's okay, but if someone is gay in real life they're much less welcoming.
Speaking of, the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team has a particularly unfortunate example with a sissy villain who's also slowly dying of some unnamed wasting disease. Yes, it was made after 1985.
@erinn661 Why the FUCK did you watch this video when it CLEARLY said "That's Gay"? Did you expect it to be a gay-basher video? Look elsewhere, my homophobic friend.
"the media" has been undermining a lot of groups and brainwashing people for years ... no surprise ... but you gotta admit they have been very "gay friendly" in recent years as well especially TV
i dont entirely agree with this. there are hundreds of villains created every year in cinema, theres bound to be some that are written as gay. im not saying there isn't a smidgen of truth, or that the amount of villains/hero's isn't off, but i think there should be a good mix of gay hero's and villains
Well I think some of it was reading too much into it but indoctrination is true.I am a supporter of gay rights but speech is a freedom too so I someone want to make a gay super villain why should we stop him. Look at kids cartoons now mostly a feminine male pears as a supporting role. On the other hand superheros had a male sidekick who says with them where ever they go.
@ameerxx12 At least villains have more fun. That's how it works. Boring straighty hero, fabulous and interesting villain who knows how to enjoy himself and his work.
actually Buffalo Bill was a tranny... so can you count that as a gay man? Idk. Either way, its pretty disgusting how Hollywood loves to attack and pick on gay men. :P
worst "that's gay" ever. really bad. it would've been way better if you'd have tackled the heteronormativity of protagonists. saying all of those (closeted?) villains are gay is just as heteronormative as the producers you're supposedly bashing.

I don't get it..is this supposed to be :
making fun of gays?
making fun of gay stereotypes?
making fun of homophobes?
PS: Is this guy gay?

Don't let Tom Crusie see this he'll sue you! Because he is so "straight" that even if you crack a gay joke at him he has to make it clear that he loved the pussy......>_> like it is fooling us

another thing, the poiny of Xerxes was not to be a gay guy hitting on Leonidas, he was portrayed as a man who thought himself a god. His behavior was aimed at intimidating and awing people. I call moron on Safi for this one.
aavr1992 1 year ago
ok, normally I like what Safii says, but this time I thought he was just grasping at straws. The talented mr. ripley, Id hit him too for talking to me that way
aavr1992 1 year ago 4
@aavr1992 Buffalo Bill, actually... and YEAH he was gay.
TheAmicojoe 1 year ago
@TheAmicojoe bill, bob; whatever. I haven't seen the movie in like 7 years. And besides, it never flat out said he was gay (but the implications put it at like 99.9999999999999%). You missed the entire point of what I said. Were you just looking through old comments looking for people to troll at midnight? My point was that I think he was running out of good material and decided to use some material that required a little poetic license to execute the presentation.
aavr1992 1 year ago
...Sasuke...
Narukashi666 1 year ago
@Narukashi666 japanese anime don't count as prejudice @.@ they can turn a villain gay because very often the main characters also are... Actually, they make whoever they want gay... That's because their public don't care about who's gay or who isn't... And often that same public think that anime gayness is cute.
And about every villain being gay... That's just paranoic... =/
Liu484 1 year ago
@Liu484 I know, I was just pointing out how very often it happens. It's just something that gets on my nerves when it's blasted everywhere.
Cha, just imagine every villain as gay. That's what I meant. Sorry if it's not clear. It's a lot more hilarious when you think of the obviously too-evil-to-give-a-crap suddenly dropping their evil schemes because their boyfriend/girlfriend wanted to go hang out at a gay bar. :D
Narukashi666 1 year ago
@Liu484 Japan is actually more homophobic than the US. They have this weird thing that if it's fiction, it's okay, but if someone is gay in real life they're much less welcoming.
Speaking of, the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team has a particularly unfortunate example with a sissy villain who's also slowly dying of some unnamed wasting disease. Yes, it was made after 1985.

How you know someone is a villain in a disney movie: 1. he's swishy and/or 2. he's english.

not "gay" but I noticed this
"the media" has been undermining a lot of groups and brainwashing people for years ... no surprise ... but you gotta admit they have been very "gay friendly" in recent years as well especially TV

Shere Khan exudes sexy menace, I would hardly call him foppish. In Tales Spin his CEO version is many things, but not gay.
Elementroar 1 year ago
i dont entirely agree with this. there are hundreds of villains created every year in cinema, theres bound to be some that are written as gay. im not saying there isn't a smidgen of truth, or that the amount of villains/hero's isn't off, but i think there should be a good mix of gay hero's and villains

Well I think some of it was reading too much into it but indoctrination is true.I am a supporter of gay rights but speech is a freedom too so I someone want to make a gay super villain why should we stop him. Look at kids cartoons now mostly a feminine male pears as a supporting role. On the other hand superheros had a male sidekick who says with them where ever they go.

actually Buffalo Bill was a tranny... so can you count that as a gay man? Idk. Either way, its pretty disgusting how Hollywood loves to attack and pick on gay men. :P
crankinup120 1 year ago
worst "that's gay" ever. really bad. it would've been way better if you'd have tackled the heteronormativity of protagonists. saying all of those (closeted?) villains are gay is just as heteronormative as the producers you're supposedly bashing.
