The loss of dead trees is one of the primary reasons this woodpecker species is not as common as it once was years ago. Even with European starlings around, if people wouldn't hack every snag, these birds would not be as rare as they now are in certain places.

This is why we don't cut down any tree that breaks - we have seven varieties of woodpecker (including pileated) that visit our backyard.
