@TREK5SE I love Star Trek V, along with Star Trek: The Motion Picture it's the closest in spirit to the original show. The special effects are not horrible. If the effects in this movie are bad, then the effects in the TV show should be considered even some of the worst ever. Furthermore, special effects are not what Star Trek is about.
This version has Kirk, Spock and Bones in the forward section of the Enterprise; not on the bridge as was seen in the movie. It was fitting that Kirk gave the final order to proceed to Shakaree in the films release and on the bridge at his station. The SFX showing the journey through the barrier would have given added benefit to the film. I would have edited in only this portion.
@Potrimpo Well to be honest the effects for this film where no more complex than say that of TWOK or ST3. Infact it was probably more difficult to create the whale effects for voyage home then anything this film needed. The equipment was there but ILM was not and they brought in an effects house that was ran out of some guys basement.
Sean Connery was Shatner's choice to play Sybok. His second choice would've been Max von Sydow. This character would've been far darker than Khan and the journey to the centre of the universe would've pited them against the genuine "G-d" who reveals himself to be non other than the Devil. Deep.
@Retrofan This Great Barrier Footage is breathtaking (where's the "Unreject" button!) - perhaps what Shatner had in mind. A not-for-profit FanEdit might circumvent official foot-dragging.
And I think there's enough info about the climactic battle between Kirk & God to literally bring to life the rock men and all the other details that stymied Shatner the first time around.
New effects, new editing, new ending - a new Frontier. It's a chance for redemption, anyhow.
Brilliant. I wish Paramount knew of this project and would use your footage. You have injected something that was so terribly needed in Star Trek 5; good special effects.
My God! That is brilliant! One edit I would love to see (which I think could be managed) is to have the barrier at the edge of the galaxy instead of at the centre. We know the Enterprise tried to breach the barrier at the edge of the galaxy before in TOS (and failed - perhaps the Enterprise A has more luck?) If dialogue can be changed ('edge' for 'centre') and somehow make Shatner's line 'the edge of the galaxy can't be breached', I think it could work.
Oh, this was so good. So very good. Would love to hear this with good speakers, actually feel it when the Enterprise gets buffetted and knocked around. Keep up the good work, and can't wait for more
I like that this has an extended journey through the barrier. It reminds me a lot of the journey through V'Ger's energy cloud in TMP, which was also visually really cool. It also makes the barrier seem way more expansive and dangerous. If this was rejected, what did you put in its place?
Not sure why you decided to reject it, unless you know you can improve it somehow. In any case, you're giving Star Trek V something it really deserves; a chance to live up to its potential. I'm really looking forward to seeing more!
"They say no ship can survive this"?!?!?
Yeah that`s why you already flew through this thing in "Where no man has gone before"...

@SuperJuliusC : That was the barrier at the EDGE of the galaxy. This is the barrier at the CENTER of the galaxy.

@knytrydr73 Doesn`t matter!
Remember when Mr. Sulu was actually a scientist called "Dr. Sulu" in "Where no man has gone before"!?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Even with "better" fx, this is still a bad movie.

looks bloody stunning!!! cant wait to see more of this!!!

Paramount should let Shatner fix the movie. If only Trek V would look like the clips I've seen here it would give the film a little more credibility.
Shatner's film had potential, too bad it was badly executed.

That was pretty cool. It should never have been rejected.

Much of the problem I wonder is whether or not the technology to create the effects needed for this movie was even available.

This is like way better than the movie. I had a feeling that they were in real danger, like sailing through icy storms around Cape Horn.

Your version of the Great Barrier reminds me of the Badlands.

Why was it rejected? This is great stuff. Wonder if you could enhance Shatner's original "rock man" concept?
