one thing i liked particaley about joe was his defence and counter fighing .but his last pka fight the guy gave lot pressure and got some shots in and won but joe looked great and he's a monster and strong as can be and still doing it that awsome .and showing can still do after 50 thats something i'm happy for him
When a group of people say's one individual is the greastest or the best, i tend to challenge & think for myself. How did they chose 'Jordan' over 'Ali'? I don't see it, & they once said' Joe Louis' was the greastest heavyweight. Because 'Ali' did things & the media surrounded him, they say he's the 'Greastest'. 'Bruce' was a master & great, but when 'Jet Li' potrayed a respected 'master', Bruce Lee' even called him' my teacher. I can't call his name, but Jet Li did it in fearless. Bruce was OK.
I always believed he was g a great fighter. This is the first time I've seen him and he looks awful. I guess it's the same as Chuck Norris; they were the best of a small group in an undeveloped sport. That clip has shocked me! His technique is awful, he's slow, moves awkwardly, would imagine he's not hard to hit, just plain awful. Take this clip down! I prefer the Joe Lewis in my head!!
Too slow. The greatest is still Bruce Lee. If these two met in the ring, Bruce Lee's gonna be doing the flamenco on his face even before he can raise his foot (no offense, just what the eyes can see). And please don't ride on someone else's popularity. You wouldn't even be recognized if it were not for Bruce Lee, so stop bad-mouthing him. Die great... you might be even half of what he was (if you're lucky)
and as i've stated before the kick boxing lewis & the americans after him engaged in had the MEAT of the sport removed .the leg kick inner & outter thiegh & calf. when applyed it seperate's the men from the boys. ie blinky rodiguez dismantling bill wallace.
What the hell are you talking about? The fighters were not responsible for the prohibition of leg kicks and other techniques. It was the athletic commission of each state and as well as TV exectives which did not approve any of those techniques for the American full-contact. The fighters were not to be blamed. If you want to talk about how great muay thai is, then you should go somewhere else. This is a Joe Lewis clip.
@legkicker01 wrong again leg kicker they fought under the PKA WHO MADE THE RULES don & judy quinn, the WKA was around at the same time they allowed leg kicks, here in the states. and truth be told well i won't say it your liable to blow a fuse
The Quines had to listen to the California Athletic Commission in order to establish the official rules set for the sport of full-contact karate. Even the WKA had difficulty promoting fights with leg kicks in the US when local athletic commission did not agree with it. In addition, there were TV executves and financiers. The fighters had no match against those.
now i gotta give you a history before thailand was & thailand that reigon was called SIAM who's borders flooded all areas we know now as cambodia-laos-burma. a1000 year history. & tecknitly all martial art around there came from CHINA at least a 2000 year history. MMA style fighting rules of engagement are pankration. no striking in ju-jtzz-. shoot fighting started in japan in the 80's ken shamrock 1st king of pancrease
The art of muay thai we know today is actually some 500 years old. The majority of the arts in SE Asia do not have 1,000 year history. Again, the ancient Greek pankration had nothing to do with the contemporary MMA. Brazilian jiu-jitsu may not emphasize the use of strike, however, vale tude competitions have encouraged to use striking as weapons.
It would have been VERY interesting to him Fight Mas Oyama. Both were heavyweights and in order to have the title best martial arts fighter of all time, a heavyweight matchup like that would have been a must.
he was 1 of the best in tourament point karate which as bruce lee & we all know now is a unrealistic game of tag. & after royse gracie showed the world in ufc-1 just how complete s**t it was, bruce lee & hellio gracie ahead of their time-light years
Lewis and others had to compete in point fighting because there wasn't anything else available to them. The point fighting of those days had lot more "fighting" than the today's couterpart. Still, Lewis decided it wasn't enough and created full-contact kickboxing. Those who never compete in any format such as Bruce Lee should not criticize point fighting.
@legkicker01 look my uninformed pal point fighting is junk make believe fighting, & kick boxing had been around 1000 years before mr lewis was born. & i might add the american verison of full contact karate was bull schale also.. kicks to the legs were not allowed nor elbows nor knees.
You still don't get it. What I tried to point out in my previous comment was that at least you should give some credit to those who did what they did. If point fighting and American full-contact are bull to you, then I don't have any intention to change your opinion. But those two things were the only things available to the majority of the American MA practitioners at that time. Tell me exactly what kind of "kickboxing" which had been around "1,000 years" ?
@legkicker01 i get it .you don't ..as a point fighter myself we were lead to beleive this fake fighting was real& DEADLY IF WE LET OUR PUNCHES & KICKS GO FOR REAL-- BS.. it only got your clock cleaned by a boxer or kick boxer. I take nothing away from joe he was 1 of the best & early poineer of kick boxing. muay tai has been around for 1000 years as was kung fu. look it up, as was greek pancrease fighting-- now in our time called MMA
OK. I understand where you are coming from. But the so-called 1,000 year history of muay thai is bullshit. Thailand as a nation doesn't have its history longer than 1,000 years. The Greek art of pancration existed centuries ago, but it dissapeared before Christ. The modern MMA has nothing to do with the ancient Greek art.
@legkicker01 KICK BOXING has been around thailand or in that neck of the woods for hundrds of years & mma is the 22nd century fighting art with its roots set in pancrease which is the real true form of martial art striking-kicking-grapaling-judo throws- joint locking-jtzzo. joe lewis would be the first to tell you mma is the real deal
The history of muay thai is about 500 years, but still your saying 1,000 history is ridiculous. And the modern MMA we see today has nothing to do with the ancient Greek art of pankration. They may share the similar concept, but other than that, the modern MMA has inherited nothing from the Greek art, which died before Christ was born. The contemporary MMA has its roots in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and vale tudo.
love it when i hear ppl saying karate isnt any good this that, probably been training with pussies, here in South Africa we train because we hav more murders than U have soldiers killed in afghanistan&iraq, my instructor 18 times world karate champion, yes thats 18 times, took out 3 ppl trying to high jack her with a gun, so not sure who is teaching who there in the states, some1 who trains wil b able to sort most thugs out, perhaps not mma style guys, but the average joe doesnt have a chance!
I CANT GET OVER THIS! fukn ignorance in the media! i guess the dude reporter wasnt doin any stories on Yasuhiro Yamashita at the time, the UN-FUCKN-DEFEATED 5 time world judo champion. right when this was shot he was in the middle of winning gold #4 or 5 in LA 84 olympics.
lol! "the greatest martial arts fighter of all time" the dude reporter says. then i love when lewis himself says "..they voted me the greatest (pause, better not say martial arts in general) fighter of all time". funny when u consider every single national judo or brazilian jiujitsu champion coulda kicked his nerfed martial art practicing ass for that title if he was actually mma. karate baby! practice that fukn horse stance all day bitch and practice standing in line punchin the air!
agreed dude, this is a complete joke. karate is a form of self defence that fat people and nerds take up, as a martial artists myself i cant belive this guy actually thinks hes the best in the world hahah, i would bet $1000 that an ameteur muay thai fighter could knock this dick ehad out :p
Joe Lewis isn't stupid. He's around 70 now and still trains, he's quick and powerful, still a great instructor. We can't appreciate the present if we don't respect the past. MMA owes a lot to Joe Lewis and others like him as well.
Despite the fact that he won more point tournaments than any fighter in history, Joe Lewis' size and aggressive style was better suited for the full-contact or kickboxing arena. From 1970-1971, Lewis was 11-0 with 11 knockouts and none of his opponents made it past the 2nd round. Lewis returned to kickboxing in 1974 and proceded to have an on-again, off-again career. Lewis' final record was 18-3 with 16 knockouts.
Did he say Chuck Wallace? He meant Norris of course. Joe Lewis is good for sure, greatest fighter ever compared to Benny The Jet or DonThe Dragon Wilson - I think not. Lewis's full contact record was not close to theirs.
While I am never a fan of video games, your comment regarding Ken, Ryu, or Sagat are wrong.
Ken Masters might have been influenced by Benny Urquidez. Joe Lewis is totally unknown in Japan though his "Jaguar Lives" was released there. Ryu and Sagat are just generic karate/Thai boxing characters. The name Sagat came from the Thai champion Sakad Petchyindee, who fought several times in Japan.
All those well known video game titles came into the picture when I was in high school. Some of my classmates were really into the video games and I got some knowledge from them. Yes, you are right about the comic book which was supposed to be a bio of Mas Oyama. I originally trained in Mr.Soeno's system, but I have to say some of his muay thai exploits were a little exaggerated. Joe Lewis is pretty much unknown because the PKA had no action here in Japan.
there is video on youtube of bruce lee and Joe lewis in a karate match . the match was stopped when lee landed a kick that made lewis knees buckle. lewis was grabbing his sides as teh ref and otehrs ran in to see if lewis was ok. that video answers the question. in there karate match lee won .
Guys, relax. This is a Joe Lewis clip. If you want to talk about Bruce Lee, then go somewhere else. There's absolutely no way for us to know how Bruce could have fared against Joe Lewis or any other known fighters. So don't waste your time and energy on meaningless discussions. Instead just go back to your training hall to get yourself in fighting shape. Joe Lewis has much more to offer other than his training with Bruce. We should talk more about them.
, muhhamad ali in his weight was probally one of the weakest punchers. he was fast and he could read his opponents and move before he got hit and countered with it... thats what makes a great fighter... but bruce was small, but for his size he punched and kicked just as hard as some heavy weights... but alot faster than any of them..
bruce rarely got hit.. watch him spar of cause he is sparring so he isnt trying to knocked the guy out, but just watch how he scores every hit, and doesnt get hit.
in enter the dragon when bruce side kicks bob wall, bob claimed he could take bruce lees kick and not move and embarrass bruce lee.. cause bruce was a little guy, and bob was a tough guy that knew how to take a kick or punch... then what happens bruce kicks bob and he falls on his arse.. doing this 8 times, and even once, bruce kicked him so hard the guy catching bobs fall, shatterd and broke his arm... this came from bob wall himself.
bruce could kick the shit out of a 300lb bag, very powerful
It's really amazing way too many people point out how Bruce Lee influenced Joe Lewis, or Lee was a better fighter than Lewis, etc in vertually every one of Joe Lewis clip. It's true Lee taught Lewis briefly, and Lewis gives credits to Lee for teaching him. But being a fighter is totally different matter. Comparing Lewis and Lee is like comparing Mike Tyson and Cus D'Amato. Lee was never a fighter, but had some fabulous ideas for martial arts.
bruce lee had many fights he had to move away from hong kong becausse he was constatly getting into street fights beating people up...
if your talking about sport where points are scored then bruce is still the best like he was in the street..
watch bruce lee sparring... watch how he counters every hit, watch how he fights blind folded. bruce had skills beyond any fighter.. hong kong amateur boxing scoring many knockouts,,, knock outs in amateur boxing!! wow
he was great but your forgetting he was overly light.. a big heavy bastard mitev been able to do away with him.. not cos he's a better fighter, but because his advantage would overwhelm the much lighter guy
That frequently was not the case in open weight Kyokushin Karate World Open full contact tournaments or Vale Tudo ("Anything Goes") MMA matches since 1928
All these comments yapping how good Bruce Lee is. Joe won major competition titles against a range of top quality opponents over a good many years. Bruce is a weak actor who made poor movies showing off a superseded martial art.
what the fuck you talking about? Bruce lee is still considered as the leader of martial artists. Go and educate yourself, go and learn about what he has developed. Honestly...! T-W-A-T
Wasn't it plain enough what i wrote? After watching a few of Bruce Lee movies i don't want to learn any acting tips from him. Maybe you can show your skills and play the part of a lion from Game of Death 2.
Mate, tell me, are you naturally stupid or have you been on some kind of courses? Go and fuckin compare training videos of Joe and Bruce and make the difference between the master and the follower. Find yourself a copy of the tao of JKD and educate yourself. Youre insulting the most recognised martial artist of the world, may be through films, I agree, but facts are written black on white. He has developed one of the most recognised art of the world. Respect mate, respect.
yep exactly bruce and joe lewis use to be good friends...
and bruce was teaching him how to fight... bruce was the best, people that think bruce is an actor is stupid, like litarally stupid, go find interviews of people that knew bruce and see what they say... chuck norris , joe lewis, bruce lee, and bob wall were all friends. and chuck norris was asked who would win in a real fight between u and bruce..... chuck replied without even thinking, bruce NOBODY could beat bruce.. its obvious
@hextai111 hahahaha mate you have no idea how this sentence sounds stupid to people who actually know about martial arts and its history. Do you think Bruce Lee was just an actor, learning moves for this movies? Please educate yourself and learn about his life, achievements and what he left behind. I can't believe I invested my time into replying to you.
@kigogot well i know bruce lee, IMO he was not as tough as Mas "Godhand" Oyama, so please educate ur self about mas oyama, is life, achievements and what he left behind, t
He is good, but he has the 'karate' footwork which would not work when fighting with Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee can adapt into one's fighting style because he believes in no style as a style. This means that he will be able to move so unpredictably, so unorthodox which will make Joe an easy prey. But it was quite dumb for him not to play the villian in The Way of The dragon cause his ego attitude has made Chuck Norris so much wealthier and popular compared to him. More people knows Chuck than Joe.
lets get something straight joe lewis had a fall out with bruce for the role in return of the dragon where lee is supposed to win. understand that joe lewis was already a competitor in many tournaments and fought guys tougher than bruce lee.
Say it to him. No one has ever said anything to his face-ever. I'm serious. No one has ever stepped to him. I've trained with him for a long time and I've never seen anyone hang with him.
Second to Bruce. Within the first year of training with Bruce Lee, Lewis had become virtually unbeatable in tournament competition, winning 11 consecutive sparring titles. Bruce Lee was by far superior in sparring while training.
yep lewis was the only one of bruce lee's world chapion students to fight in single competition after training with him(chuck norris and mike stone stopped)
Bruce Lee weighed 100lbs. If he fought Joe Lewis he would have been put through a wall. He looked great on film but if it came down to life or death Lewis would have destroyed him.
Uh...Wrong. Your not a very good fighter if you judge someone just from the size of their bodies. Bruce was 100% muscle and he weighed more then 100 pounds. Don't be stupid.
Uh...not if you really know how to fight. Size has nothing to do with it when you truly know how to fight. Bruce was a true Master of the SCIENCE of fighting. Lee was solid muscle, speed, and power. In a true fight Lewis would be regaining consciousness before he even knew what happened.
bruce lee taught joe lewis. so I'm sure they did fight, and since bruce lee was the master, and joe lewis was the student, I assume bruce won. Especially since in this video joe was talking about some of the things that bruce taught him, mis direction of attack , fake attacks, etc.
Bruce Lee was untouchable, Lewis had no chance vs LEE ur a moron lewis is what he is because of Bruce Lee, after he got trained by bruce lee he was undefeated
Bruce Weighed 145 pounds. Many people who knew him said his muscles were like steel, no body fat whatsoever. Many people also said, like Chuck Norris, he was pound for pound probably the strongest person in the world. Its hard to say what would happen, but Bruce was a continuously evolving person and his training routine made him phenomenally strong. It would have been a good fight. Personally I think Bruce had every aspect of fighting truly down to an art and expression. Id bet on Bruce.

For someone who says they're not a fan of video games, you seem to think you're awfully well informed.
Reiba "Darklord of Muay Thai" was bald with an eyepatch. He is shown in the Japanese manga that was based on Soeno's challenges.
I highly doubt Capcom did that coincidently.
Joe Lewis is more popular in Japan than you think, and Soeno is legend there.
And Capcom's taken multiple influences for their character creations, so its not impossible to rule out using Sakad as a name influence as well

in enter the dragon when bruce side kicks bob wall, bob claimed he could take bruce lees kick and not move and embarrass bruce lee.. cause bruce was a little guy, and bob was a tough guy that knew how to take a kick or punch... then what happens bruce kicks bob and he falls on his arse.. doing this 8 times, and even once, bruce kicked him so hard the guy catching bobs fall, shatterd and broke his arm... this came from bob wall himself.
bruce could kick the shit out of a 300lb bag, very powerful

It's really amazing way too many people point out how Bruce Lee influenced Joe Lewis, or Lee was a better fighter than Lewis, etc in vertually every one of Joe Lewis clip. It's true Lee taught Lewis briefly, and Lewis gives credits to Lee for teaching him. But being a fighter is totally different matter. Comparing Lewis and Lee is like comparing Mike Tyson and Cus D'Amato. Lee was never a fighter, but had some fabulous ideas for martial arts.
legkicker01 3 years ago 2
bruce lee had many fights he had to move away from hong kong becausse he was constatly getting into street fights beating people up...
if your talking about sport where points are scored then bruce is still the best like he was in the street..
watch bruce lee sparring... watch how he counters every hit, watch how he fights blind folded. bruce had skills beyond any fighter.. hong kong amateur boxing scoring many knockouts,,, knock outs in amateur boxing!! wow

was he better then chuck n would he beat lenny mclean or roy shaw

In the late 60 s and early 70 Joe Lewis was my ideal. He was the champ.
tct480 3 years ago
he was great but your forgetting he was overly light.. a big heavy bastard mitev been able to do away with him.. not cos he's a better fighter, but because his advantage would overwhelm the much lighter guy
MMAMickey 3 years ago
That frequently was not the case in open weight Kyokushin Karate World Open full contact tournaments or Vale Tudo ("Anything Goes") MMA matches since 1928

All these comments yapping how good Bruce Lee is. Joe won major competition titles against a range of top quality opponents over a good many years. Bruce is a weak actor who made poor movies showing off a superseded martial art.
FactoryRaid 4 years ago
i agree wing chun has been superceeded.. although i spose he knew that before he started learning everything
MMAMickey 3 years ago
what the fuck you talking about? Bruce lee is still considered as the leader of martial artists. Go and educate yourself, go and learn about what he has developed. Honestly...! T-W-A-T
kigogot 3 years ago 3
Wasn't it plain enough what i wrote? After watching a few of Bruce Lee movies i don't want to learn any acting tips from him. Maybe you can show your skills and play the part of a lion from Game of Death 2.
FactoryRaid 3 years ago
Mate, tell me, are you naturally stupid or have you been on some kind of courses? Go and fuckin compare training videos of Joe and Bruce and make the difference between the master and the follower. Find yourself a copy of the tao of JKD and educate yourself. Youre insulting the most recognised martial artist of the world, may be through films, I agree, but facts are written black on white. He has developed one of the most recognised art of the world. Respect mate, respect.
kigogot 3 years ago 2
Uhh Bruce wasn't actually even in that movie.
dalung 3 years ago 2
yep exactly bruce and joe lewis use to be good friends...
and bruce was teaching him how to fight... bruce was the best, people that think bruce is an actor is stupid, like litarally stupid, go find interviews of people that knew bruce and see what they say... chuck norris , joe lewis, bruce lee, and bob wall were all friends. and chuck norris was asked who would win in a real fight between u and bruce..... chuck replied without even thinking, bruce NOBODY could beat bruce.. its obvious

@kigogot Mas Oyama will kill bruce lee, Oyama experince in 200 real-life fights and knocked out bulls with one punch
hextai111 5 months ago
@hextai111 hahahaha mate you have no idea how this sentence sounds stupid to people who actually know about martial arts and its history. Do you think Bruce Lee was just an actor, learning moves for this movies? Please educate yourself and learn about his life, achievements and what he left behind. I can't believe I invested my time into replying to you.
kigogot 5 months ago
@kigogot well i know bruce lee, IMO he was not as tough as Mas "Godhand" Oyama, so please educate ur self about mas oyama, is life, achievements and what he left behind, t
hextai111 5 months ago
@hextai111 ok. yeah. you and oyama are right.

But don't get me wrong, Joe Lewis is still the legend and one of the greatest in Karate history. That, we should respect him for it.
willykwa79 4 years ago
surely you mean karate history since its been on telly.. you ain got a clue how good some of the old japs mitev been
MMAMickey 3 years ago
He is good, but he has the 'karate' footwork which would not work when fighting with Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee can adapt into one's fighting style because he believes in no style as a style. This means that he will be able to move so unpredictably, so unorthodox which will make Joe an easy prey. But it was quite dumb for him not to play the villian in The Way of The dragon cause his ego attitude has made Chuck Norris so much wealthier and popular compared to him. More people knows Chuck than Joe.

vic moore, louis delgado, mike stone, thomas la puppet, bill wallace, chuck norris
baldrascal 4 years ago
lets get something straight joe lewis had a fall out with bruce for the role in return of the dragon where lee is supposed to win. understand that joe lewis was already a competitor in many tournaments and fought guys tougher than bruce lee.

Say it to him. No one has ever said anything to his face-ever. I'm serious. No one has ever stepped to him. I've trained with him for a long time and I've never seen anyone hang with him.
777follower 4 years ago
He meant to say Chuck NORRIS and Bill Wallace voted in on him. But he is still cool.

joe lewis can't kick worth crap. bill wallace is a much better fighter

Joe Lewis really is the best fighter of all time.
asimpson1 4 years ago
Second to Bruce. Within the first year of training with Bruce Lee, Lewis had become virtually unbeatable in tournament competition, winning 11 consecutive sparring titles. Bruce Lee was by far superior in sparring while training.
AngelOfNight9 4 years ago
yep lewis was the only one of bruce lee's world chapion students to fight in single competition after training with him(chuck norris and mike stone stopped)
floydmichaelmoss 4 years ago
Bruce Lee weighed 100lbs. If he fought Joe Lewis he would have been put through a wall. He looked great on film but if it came down to life or death Lewis would have destroyed him.
furashhole 4 years ago
Uh...Wrong. Your not a very good fighter if you judge someone just from the size of their bodies. Bruce was 100% muscle and he weighed more then 100 pounds. Don't be stupid.
kingzero200 4 years ago
135 for the record solid muscle
floydmichaelmoss 4 years ago
Uh...not if you really know how to fight. Size has nothing to do with it when you truly know how to fight. Bruce was a true Master of the SCIENCE of fighting. Lee was solid muscle, speed, and power. In a true fight Lewis would be regaining consciousness before he even knew what happened.
U2BR2006 4 years ago
bruce lee taught joe lewis. so I'm sure they did fight, and since bruce lee was the master, and joe lewis was the student, I assume bruce won. Especially since in this video joe was talking about some of the things that bruce taught him, mis direction of attack , fake attacks, etc.
sakuyarules 4 years ago
Bruce Lee was untouchable, Lewis had no chance vs LEE ur a moron lewis is what he is because of Bruce Lee, after he got trained by bruce lee he was undefeated
redfirekla 4 years ago
Bruce Weighed 145 pounds. Many people who knew him said his muscles were like steel, no body fat whatsoever. Many people also said, like Chuck Norris, he was pound for pound probably the strongest person in the world. Its hard to say what would happen, but Bruce was a continuously evolving person and his training routine made him phenomenally strong. It would have been a good fight. Personally I think Bruce had every aspect of fighting truly down to an art and expression. Id bet on Bruce.
shicack 4 years ago
It's weird how Bruce didn't compete. Maybe because people knew he was the best and didn't need proof.
