  • Very good.

I'm starting this piece shortly, as my father left me with the original music (1947)! Wel played and even more so so ce your reading music.

    Tony

  • @AnthonyB7777 Thank you Tony, and good luck with your study of the piece. Of course, although I use the score, I am not actually sightreading the piece, as I did practise it before making the video!

  • Hello again,

I needed some pick me up, and after I hear your playing again, I feel like

I am not alone anymore. Thank you for playing so beautifully.

Please make a record of your playing.

I love to have them to share with my friends that do not use a computer.

God bless and inspire you always!

    Thank you,

    HagenSara10

  • @HagenSara10 Thank you Sara. You are certainly not alone! Alas I have made no recordings of my playing, but you can always download my YouTube videos with RealPlayer (free) and extract the sound as MP3s.

  • Hi Philip! Thank you so much for posting all your videos - I have had so much pleasure, listening through pieces that my old and very missed first piano teacher used to play to me. In any case, keep up the excellent work! You really should release a CD!!!!! Regards, Jay (London)

  • @jaydcuk Thank you very much Jay - much appreciated. I'm not sure about the CD - there are too many other pianists out there. Despite limitations of sound quality (mine), YT is a really direct way of getting out there the music that I really want to play!

  • this piano piece means a lot to me - it was my piano recital piece in junior high 40 yrs. ago! thanks for sharing your wonderful talent to the world. you have encouraged me to do better . oh, if only i can play half as much as you do, then it would be a dream come true, not only to "olwen", but more so, to me! may God bless us all...

  • @tdadz56 Thank you very much. You must have been very good to perform this while still at high school, and I wish you every success with the playing that you do now!

  • Thank you for your response. I may just do that!!

  • Mam used to play this as I was growing up!! Wish she taught me to play!!

  • @Nina6955 I hope this has brought back some pleasant memories - and I am sure it is not too late to learn!

  • You play one of the most beautiful and meaningful pieces of music for piano solo.

Thank you for providing this wonderful treat to us piano lovers.

While I Live is the perfect title for it just speaks of the time one has left on this earth.

God bless you always and your inspiring playing.

    SaraHagen10

  • yes, i think i heard a few notes that didnt sound quite right to my ear, but who am i to judge you - but it was a fantastic performance and u did very well to hide a couple of mistakes that wouldve sounded bad if it had come from any other pianist, u really have mastered you instrument ! =)

  • Thank you for this beautiful playing!

I never get tired of this piece of music!

You are a superb piano player!

    SaraHagen10

  • @HagenSara10 Thank you Sara, that's really kind.

  • Well played, and at just the right tempo.

  • @thrippleton That's good to hear. Thank you!

  • GREAT, AS ALWAYS.....

  • @malditou2 Thanks very much!

  • I like the cinematic effect on the last note "THE END". That made me smile. Now where`s the ice cream girl?

  • @amezcuaist Thank you! Indeed, where is she - send her over!

  • Is it stupid to sit in one's own living room clapping the end of a piece on You Tube?

This is superb, another piece that my Gran used to play, my memory suggests that she was better than Paderewski, but you may understand that I was only a lad, and I didn't then know that a grand was better than a knocked about old upright with rock hard felts on the hammers.

  • @harryfaber Thanks! I sometime applaud performances I see on TV (eg Cardiff Singer of the World recently), so probably not!

  • WOW! I found the sheet music for this and skipped through it. I thought it looked cool and fun to play, so I bought it. I type it into Youtube and yet again I am brought to your channel!!! And hearing you play it makes me happy that I got it! :D I'm a big fan of your Joe Hisaishi and Yiruma covers!!!! I'm always lead to your channel when searching for music xD. BTW, you rock at piano!

  • @PurpleZebras150 Thank you - that's a really good comment. And BTW that's a great channel title you have!

  • The performance to beat. Everyone who aspires to play this piece correctly should watch this. It is marred only by a slight distortion of the recording (fairly common in You Tube).

  • @myxklptk Thanks very much. Yes, the sound is not perfect. It is better in my more recent videos,as I have changed editing software!

  • I love the way Mr. Sear plays it, especially the part of the "Poco piu mosso ed agitato", the melody on the left hand is outstanding!

    Brilliantly played! I love it!

Thank you for this great performance!

    HagenSara

  • @HagenSara10 Thank you very much for watching!

  • This is the most impressive version of "Dream of Olwen" I have ever heard (or seen). Congratulations Phillip, absolutely marvellous! I'm adding this to my favourites.

    Carlyrachel Collins.

  • @CarlyrachelCollins Thank you CarlyRachel. It is good that this piece has deservedly remained popular for so long.

  • You play this so beautifully! This was one of the pieces my mother used to play when I was young, and inspired me to learn the piano. I had to buy a new copy a few years back because the original one we both had learned on was literally falling apart from age. I haven't played seriously in ages, but am about to take up lessons again. I thought about this song and was delighted to find your performance. I had hit the Liberace version first and thought it was horrid, this is the way it should be!

  • @AtomicBooty That's a really kind comment. I wish you every success with your new piano lessons, and am sure you will get a lot of pleasure from them.

  • The dream of me, how wonderful!!! Played beautifully, thank you.

  • @OlwenMair Thank you very much!

  • I heard this melody over the radio...i was then a first grader in piano, altho i did not yet have the formal training but thro self study. So, when i started to take up piano lesson i asked for this piece. I thought i was prepared for it and made a deal with my teacher that if i memorize Sylvia she'd reward me with this..and so she did. It took me 3 months to learn this piece coz of my lil exposure to the notes and style being a first grader. Until now i play this memorable piece.

    God bless!

  • @musicmindedclaire62 Thank you very much. I am in awe of the work you did to learn this piece, and hope you get a lot of pleasure from playing it

  • This was my Mums favourite party piece that see played on the piano from the age of 9. She requested the piece in hospital, before she died months later. We then had a recorded rendition of my Mum playing at her funeral during the service. I have since learnt to play the first part of it on the same piano that my mum started out on over seventy years ago.

  • @garycliffordwall Thank you. As you can see from the other comments, this piece seems to have brought back memories to a lot of people, and the piano solo version was a staple of home music collections 60 years ago! I am sorry your mother is not around to play it, but it is great that you can play some of it on her piano, and I hope you can master the rest!

  • i originally posted that this brought back memories of my childhood and curling up on my beloved dads knee listening to this tune..i am 48 now..it was one of dads favourite tunes..my next post was after we found out dad had cancer, sadly the miracle did not come our way and we lost him at age of 68 a few weeks after diagnosis...i cry when i hear this tune as will miss dad forever but i love the memories of the little girl in her dads safe arms that it brings back to me..thank you so much xxx

  • @bigbaddemoness Thanks for your post - I am so sorry to hear about your father. One of my cousins (younger than me) is currently grappling with a bad cancer case, and it is a terrible thing to deal with. I am glad this piece brings back some happy memories.

  • I have always loved this song. I haven't heard anyone play it until now besides my mom on the piano when I was young

  • @baseballcach Thank you. I think a few people other than me still play it!

  • This is bliss...tried to get film for ages, hadn't realised film was titled "While I Live" thanks to Amazon! bought film for mom, just watched it...still as good as I remembered it as a child. You play it brilliantly! many thanks for posting.

  • @LadyGmarilyn Thanks for your kind comment. I am glad you enjoyed seeing the film again. I must do the same myself!

  • I was born in 1945, my mother named me Olwyne (her spelling) after this piece of music and it is such an honour. I have always loved my name and have searched on the net since 1996 to find it. At last I have as knowing something but never hearing it, was very hard. I would love to have the words to it. Thankyou so much, you play it so beautifully.

  • @heavenlyrooster That's a really interesting comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I'm not sure that the piece exists as a song with lyrics - but could be wrong on that.

  • thank you for your time

  • this is great, played with a lot of feelings, thank you so much just as i am feeling down you have uplifted me thank you

  • @Kkianco I am delighted to have cheered you up. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

  • good for the soul

  • @royboy1930 Thank you - I hope so!

  • Peter, Nice job on this great number! What edition of the music are using for this recording?

  • @fhood Thank you. I am using the standard beige-covered edition published in the 1950s, and still to be found in many dusty piles of oldmusic all over the UK! It is still available from the Boosey website.

  • This is beautiful.......By the same composer, do you have or can play the theme The Way To The Stars from the film of the same name?

  • @atlanticflier Thank you. I do not know the piece you mention, but I will certainly look out for it!

  • Absolutely beautiful, played with wonderful feeling, you are a brilliant pianist.

  • @obscuramusic That's really kind - thank you!

  • OMG! You leave me totally breathless! T'was so BEAUTIFULLY played..my heart is with this masterpiece. I loved the exquisite sound of your piano. Thank you so much for such a wonderful performance. You're on my playlist (which, btw, I play almost everyday b4 working) Now,I would certainly love to learn this because of you...GENUINELY BRILLIANT! And I thank you!!! =) -------- from the PHILIPPINES.

  • @myviolinstrings Thank you very much. I am really glad you liked this so much. Greetings to you from the UK. I hope you are not having too many typhoons in the Philippings. I sure would like some of your warm weather in the forthcoming winter months!

  • WOW! Excellent, piano player! Truly unbelievable, full of expression to it's maximum level. No one can do better than this phenomenal! I've heard this piece played with an entire orchestra, but this person playing has made it his own. The BEST I've ever heard. Probably better than the original. Whoever you are, I can't believe not a single note was missed,

Total PERFECTION from start to it's final end! VERY IMPRESSIVE!

  • @malditou2 Wow - thanks for your most kind comment. I can't guarantee I didn't miss or fluff the odd note though!

  • @PSearPianist @PSearPianist @PSearPianist Thank you for your humble reply. With the relentless expression that you exhibit, the piece To Love Again from the Eddy Duchin Story-Chopin Nocturne movie would probably be an exceptional piece for you, as it has a lot of different moods that one can put into it!. No one can challenge you on the emotions you bring, the relentless flow that you capture, no

  • Thank you so much for bringing back such happy memories for me..i am 48 now and remember sitting on my dads knee as a young child listening to this,it is one of his all time favourite tunes,he is 68 now and i love him to bits..your brilliant rendition brought a tear to my eye..thank you..x

  • @bigbaddemoness Thank you very much! I'm glad this bought back memories for you. I too loved the music when I saw the movie!

  • @PSearPianist since i posted my comment my dad has become ill..tests show he has cancer and 2 months left to live,he is 68..this tune will always remind me of him and of happier times..thank you so much for that PSearPianist..xx

  • @bigbaddemoness I'm so sorry to hear that news, but lets all hope for a miracle.

  • Oh you are awesome! I remember my mom playing this on the piano, she died of pancreatic cancer in 2008. I miss her and her piano playing. Hearing this brings back good memories of me either sitting next to her, under the keys, or next to the piano w/ my head against it. I now have the piano and have no intent to ever get rid of it. Thank you for posting and bringing good memories back.

  • @persyphanny Thank you. I am really pleased to have helped you recapture such precious memories!

  • @PSearPianist Do you by chance play the Love theme from ROmeo and Juliet or Send in the Clowns, or Lara's Theme from Dr. Zhivago?

  • @persyphanny Thanks for your message. I don't have good piano versions of any of them, but maybe one day I will see if I can do something with them.

  • @PSearPianist That would be nice as my mom used to play those as well. She played many but I always loved the classical pieces. You'll have to let me know if you ever post them.

  • You play it so beautifully!!!

I'm learning it but i sound nothing like that =P

  • @brillemmarocks Thank you for your kind comment. Keep working at your own performance, and, who knows?, maybe it will be better than mine!

  • I love the music of Charles Williams he use to write music for films

I love the way you played his music it brings tears in my eyes thank you

  • @roseazz Thank you very much for your very kind comment. I am so glad you enjoyed my performance.

  • Great performance! I love how you played it, very relaxing.

  • @LeeEzekiel Thank you!

  • I like your stile to play music, thank you!

  • @fdahinden Thank you for your kind comment!

  • How I loved this as a child....thank you for posting

  • @Hailstone47 Thank you. I loved it too, and it was good to reacquaint myself with it!

  • enchanting!!!!!!

  • Thank you!

  • i love how this was played! perfect!@

  • Thank you, Christine!

  • great playing pops.

  • Thank you.

  • Great rendition of a most beautiful piece of music!

  • Thank you!

  • @PSearPianist I loved the film too!

  • Just bought the DVD of While I Live on ebay. They still have other copies.

  • Terrific interpretation. A great tribute to a wonderful piece.

  • Thank you David. I note from your channel that you are from the Bahamas. It must be great to live somewhere that is not freezing in the winter!

  • Thanks, but I'm from the Isle of Man and the weather in the Bahamas at the moment is on a par with being stuck in the middle of the Irish Sea!

  • Sorry think I may be getting my films mixed up.but its great anyway,

  • Really love this. It is such a free and passionate piece beautifully played.

Thanks very much for pointing out which film it came from as I have been wondering about and looking for the film for ages. Hope its the one I am thinking about with the young piano playing girl in plaits who was being driven mad. If I remember she was blind.

The real life story is also very interesting.

  • The film 'While I live' is about a spinster who obsesses over the death of her composer sister 25 years previously and concludes she has returned, reincarnated, in an amnesiac woman who chances upon her house seeking help. I'm glad you liked my video!

  • Parabéns!! Muito lindo!!

  • Thank you very much, Angela!

  • Thanks for your reply. Did the amnesiac have long dark hair in plaits? I saw the film when I was about 7, in the 60's, but loved it so much. In fact I only watch old films/tv now.

Very smooth and relaxed video and an amazing piece of music.

  • Splendida versione !

    Grazie

    Sal

  • Thank you very much for your kind comment!

  • In hundreds of melodies, this is one of my top 5!!

You perform this with a natural flow. Although I'm way too far from this level of performance, I would like to learn it but I can't find the score. Where can I get it, would you know?

  • Thanks for your kind comment. It is still in copyright so I can't send a copy. However it is in print, and is published by Alfred Publishing in the US, and you could certainly buy it from an online sheet music seller (Sheet Music Plus sell it).

  • Amazing.

I'm playing this piece for my college audition.

Thank you so much for posting.

  • That's an unusual choice for a college audition. I wish you luck with it!

  • That's acutally why i chose it.

    And thanks, again.

  • Im only a measly 12 year old, but i think he didn't play it with feeling. I play it with much more feeling, and I think he plays it too fast. I just cant seem to get the opening right. The octaves are too far and fast for my fat little chubby hands... :p

  • Hi - great piece and a considered reading. I played it many years ago, well enough (I guess) to perform it publicly.

However, I DID take certain liberties with it (groan) such as alternating the opening unison octaves between each hand in a sort of faux cascade effect.

Also, with final reworking of the theme, I made it much more 'Largando' or broader, and louder, as a final dramatic statement.

Right, wrong, bad taste? I don't know. Seemed to work at the time.

  • Thanks for your interesting comment. I think it is perfectly appropriate to take liberties with this piece, and the opening is certainly corny, and had I thought of it I might well have split the octaves. I suppose that when I do these videos I tend to stick to the score, as that is a better starting point for any viewers that are thinking of learning the pieces themselves - and better discipline for me!

  • Beautiful piece..thank you so much for sharing this...it was my grandmothers name...thankz again

  • Thank you very much - I'm glad it obviously bought back memories for you.

  • I am playing this in a concert this Friday (02/10/2009) and have been looking for some inspiration.

You have taught me a great deal. Sensitively played and perfectly controlled. Now I can see how it is possible to evoke the full force of this piece without the orchestra. Thank you.

  • Thank you for your kind comment, and the very best of luck with your own performance! As I say in my description, the opening is quite corny, so you will have to work hard to make it convincing for a live audience.

  • Haha! Yes, I have worked particularly on the intro, precisely to make it sound correct. It's supposed to be a crashing wave on the Cornish coast in my interpretation.

    We'll see...

  • Hello Phillip, You do take me back a long time and also to many different parts of the world where I have played this music which include the aircraft carrier Implacable and Lake Louise B.C.Thanks for a most beautiful performance and bringing back my memories. Jannarta.

  • Thanks for your kind comment!

  • I am used to hearing this as a concerto with a full orchestra. This solo version is beautiful, and it doesn't seem to lose anything without the orchestra. Is this the composer's own arrangement? Beautifully perfomed, thank you.

  • Thanks for your kind comment. I am not sure of the provenance of the arrangement, which is unattributed in the score. With its brown cover, this version was very widely sold in the UK and can be found in any second hand book shop that deals in old sheet music!

  • Very great! I also know this piece in the transcription from Sidney Torch for Piano and Orchestra, played by Philip Fowke. Thank you for uploading!

    Markus

  • Thank you Markus. I must listen to the Sidney Torch version.

  • Beautiful music and performance. Now I wish to see the movie. Thanks for uploading.

  • Thank you - do see the movie if you can. It certainly impressed me as a child!

  • This is beautiful. Bravo.

    Tom

  • Thank you, Tom.

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you for performing and posting this beautiful solo. I know I'll listen to it often!

    Thank you again!

  • My pleasure!

  • Nice interpretation.

  • That's kind.

  • Fantastic! This is so reflective of golden age film music.

  • Thanks for your rapid comment! I have not forgotten your own piece which I hope to video soon!
