I got to see him on the Renfrew Ferry years ago, before he got his leg amputated. He was about 40 mins late to the gig coz he was out drinking, he showed up drunk as a skunk. He came out with a towel over his head and a whisky throwing punches in the air boxer style.

What a gig though. And what a guitar player.

Great song, but John Martyn just isnt what he used to be. His voice sounds like he hasnt got any teeth! lol I cringe everytime I see any of his more recent performances. He went through that mad stage in the 80's where he decided to re-record all of his records cos he hated his voice on the original recordings and ended up sounding like phil collins(who he actually collaborated with)

My mistake, the original is called jelly roll baker, or mr. jelly roll baker, martyn changed the title on his album to avoid copyright issues, as he falsley claimed to have written the song.

He's right actually. Well, I'm not sure about the copyright stuff, but the song was originally written by Lonnie Johnson. John even says "this track was originally written for the piano" at the start of the video. Well, it's a bit garbled, and it can be tricky to understand the big man at the best of timses, but it's something along those lines.
